Gavin Griffin, better known as GMJ, has been a consistent force in the progressive community for nearly a decade. Kicking his GMJ moniker off in early 2008 through Jesse Kuch’s “Open Records” & Kasey Taylor’s “Vapour Recordings” and further through the years with appearances on “Sudbeat”, “Balkan Connection”, “Flow Vinyl”, “Particles” & “Proton Music”. His style gravitates towards the atmospheric, melodic side with a partiality towards a strong groove, and he’s clearly taken that direction with his remix of Luke Sambe’s “Becoming”. Along with taking cues from the original, he’s added his own little magic through extra vocal bits, complimenting drone & groovy basslines and atmospheric fillers, all supporting a riff that runs through the track. Goosebumps moments ensued.

Luka Sambe - Becoming (GMJ Remix) [Juicebox Music]

Appearing on Proton Music with "One Side of the Underground, Vol. 1" in November 2017, Rick Pier O'Neil took another step forward in confirming his iconic status. "One Side of the Underground, Vol. 2" now sees a pair of remixes from Israel and Mexico continue the story with a trio of new tracks from O'Neil himself. 

Igal Magitman is an artist with a rich and varied story to tell. A best-selling artist whose music has featured for Sony PlayStation along with DJ performances in Europe, Brazil and his home country, the Israeli has seen his music signed to the likes of Global Underground, Spinnin' Records and Toolroom. A regular on Proton Music since a 2008 debut, Magitman's remixes of Nick Stoynoff, Silinder and Andrea Cassino have been notable highlights while October 2017's "Recovery" EP showcased Magitman's original work. Reworking "Glade", the essence of O'Neil's original runs through the remix in driving rhythmic and bass groove. Building effortlessly, a wonderfully pulsating synth line hypnotises with its unrelenting power, pausing for a dramatic breakdown that creates a stunning moment that culminates in rhythm and synth harmony for the final movement.

Diego Carr is a name that has continued to find its place in the underground dance scene through his Hot TuneiK moniker. From his home, the Mexican producer has delivered a wealth of material that has resulted in over a double-century of production credits since 2012's debut. Going on to find his music on the likes of Balkan Connection, Forward Music and Sound Avenue, Carr's own Hookah imprint has served as another important vehicle. A regular on Particles, April 2018's "Revival" EP was a highlight as two original tracks shone a bright light on the Hot TuneiK sound, complemented by remixes of Andre Sobota, Lanvary and Matter. Returning to remix "Glade", the driving power of the original is matched by a new hypnotic groove and low-slung bassline that bears the hallmarks of O'Neil's original. Building with ease, a rippling arpeggio meanders across the mid-range in mesmerising fashion as counterpoint pads come to the fore in the third movement.

Contributing three outstanding new tracks to "Vol. 2" Rick Pier O'Neil's "Another Side" is built upon strong rhythmic foundations as plucked chords provide a head-shaking groove. A wonderful, growling bassline enters the fray at the midpoint as a hypnotic synth combines with new bass progression post-breakdown in a sumptuous track. "Imperial" impresses with its driving beat and sublime melodic motif that repeats hypnotically as closed hats keep the percussive groove strong. An array of textured pads and sustained strings appear at the breakdown before a rousing crescendo leads to a wonderfully worked third movement. Redolent in driving beat and growling bass prowess, "Cancun" revels in deep, rich bass progression and gently pulsating pad textures. Hitting its stride in the second part, a wonderful blend of rhythm and cleverly programmed melody, create a work of genuine craft.

Remixes from Magitman and Hot TuneiK combined with a trio of new tracks from Rick Pier O'Neil showcase an alternative side in "One Side of the Underground Vol. 2".

Erdi Irmak - The Midnight Zone (Marcelo Paladini Remix)

Combining a host of established and emerging talents under a seasonal banner, the "Winter Particles 2019" compilation once again showcases the wealth of global talent found in the underground dance arena. Eleven tracks now represent the very best in progressive and melodic house and techno.

Opening the winter selection box, Greek sensation, Savvas, reminds listeners of his attention to detail and melodic prowess through "Mindfulness", while dub.format and Pedro Capelossi and NOIYSE PROJECT hit the ground running with impressive low-end theory as "Mentalist" and "Myth in Manus" combine huge bass prowess with delicate melodic touch.

German star, Wisqo demonstrates why he has been such a hit with the likes of Lump Music and Pipe and Pochet with the elegantly crafted "Limitless" before Kynan Cosma takes a break from his new Sense of Mind moniker to carve out a rasping bass gem and Moog inspired melody in "Sequent" that Bodzin himself would be proud of. Notable for its middle eastern vocal flourishes, E.F.G. then combines a strong rhythmic backdrop and sumptuous chord progressions in "Days and Nights".

Veteran, Rick Pier O'Neil, rarely disappoints and "Shining" is no exception to an ever-growing catalogue of prized jewels, with its dynamic energy, bass prowess and sparkling lead motif keeping the French artist firmly on point. Bosnian, Youngen, immediately impresses with the exquisitely crafted and emotive "Atlantis" that explodes into a chorus of counterpoint motifs.

Argentina's very own Nicholas Van Orton continues his distinctive groove-laden approach to his craft through "Siete Dioses" as haunting melodies and guitar phrasing play a central role in a mesmerising track. Colombian Dabeat departs from fellow countryman and regular collaborator, Kamilo Sanclemente, to shine brightly on a solo outing, "Beyond the Stars", as gated synths and stepped arpeggio present a strong representation of the title and pitched and warped melodies bend space and time. Continuing the outer space theme, Neptun 505 closes the compilation with a shimmering affair that finds a twinkling lead motif illuminating the "Light of a Non-Existent Star" in an iridescent glow, backed by dominant beat, richly textured pads and ticking percussion.

Eleven tracks brightly lit in winter sun gives Particles a crisp, clean edge for its early 2019 collection.

Winter Particles 2019

Shining (Original Mix)

The "One Side of the Underground" series on Proton Music has been the perfect vehicle for Rick Pier O'Neil to showcase his incomparable production skills. Now taking "Cancun" from August 2018's best-selling "Vol. 2," remixes for Yin and Yang come courtesy of Sri Lankan and Mexican artists.

Established artists in their own rights, Replicanth & Rodrigo Cortazar have created quite a stir with their production partnership. Their solo production material was recently featured on a host of high-profile imprints including BeatFreak Recordings and Balkan Connection and supported by a DJ glitterati that includes Hernan Cattaneo. First joining forces on the "Colossus Purple" track for NOPRESET Records in May 2017, the Mexican duo have gone on to feature for the likes of Natural Rhythm, Sudam Recordings and We Are Here Music.

Now making their collaborative debut on Yin, Replicanth & Rodrigo Cortazar take "Cancun" on a bouncing bass groove journey, backed by strong beat and off-kilter hats. Pad chord progressions from the original make their presence felt in richly textured layers, while additional production material, including a meandering vocal phrase, give a new focus to O'Neil's work.
