Ziger’s Eat My Hat imprint returns welcoming Kenan Savrun to the label for his debut single. Hailing from Ankara, the Turkish artist has a long history as a DJ dating back to 2003, having shared the booth with Alex Niggemann, Eli & Fur, Andy Bros, Victor Ruiz and Oliver Huntemann. Upon releasing his first productions in September of last year, Kenan has since gone to showcase his music on 3rd Avenue, Soundteller Records, Stripped Digital and Stellar Fountain’s Astrowave. Now embarking on the most anticipated release of his career, Kenan makes his Eat My Hat debut with ‘Shivaya’ alongside remixes from Ziger & Simos Tagias.

Having already developed a uniquely mystical sound, Kenan has been hotly tipped as one of the progressive scene’s brightest new talents. That sentiment will surely grow with  ‘Shivaya’ delivering on a profound level. Built on a backbone of tough beats and a full, perfectly carved groove, the peak time sensibility is high from the outset. Tranquil yet energetic, it’s pulsating arps and percussive flurries add dynamic splashes as momentum builds. The narrative shifts during the break with a cross cultural vocal taking centrestage, bringing moments of soul and emotion, before a timely drop transfers energy into an exhilarating finale. 

The first interpretation of ‘Shivaya’ is provided by Eat My Hat label boss Ziger. The Greek artist has had a tremendous summer season led by his ‘Faded Realm’ single which enjoyed a month long stay a top Beatport’s Progressive House Hype tracks chart. Add to that a Beatport Top 5 for his remix of Nosh & SJ’s ‘17:17’ also coming courtesy of Eat My Hat. Also laying claim to 2019 releases on Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat Music and Eleatics Records, Ziger now lands back on his comfortable home of Eat My Hat with a superb rendition of ‘Shivaya’. Taking a cue from the original, the energy proves to be just as palpable here. A reworked groove ripples with powerful momentum as vocal fragments and dark stabs steal the air. Stripping down into the main break, wispy atmospherics add further intrigue before broken beats and a robust roll ignite a massive third act. 

The release concludes with Simos Tagias making his label debut and providing the second and final interpretation of ‘Shivaya’. The Greek artist has been one of his country’s brightest stars in progressive house with a discography that features releases on Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat Music, Movement Recordings, Proton Music and Sound Avenue. Now fresh off an EP for D-Formation’s Beatfreak Recordings, Simos debuts on Eat My Hat with a superb interpretation of ‘Shivaya’. Opting for a tough, more techno inspired approach the Athens resident focuses on electric rhythms and pulsating designs, for a perfectly dialled peak time affair. The main break showcases a cascading motif, although indistinct it's emotive appeal is strong, building in waves before the final act unleashes the full vocal for an epic finale. A massive remix from Simos which caps off another incredible release for Ziger’s Eat My Hat Music. Highly recommended.

Matter & Funkform present their debut collaborative project via Roger Martinez’s Higher States imprint. As one of Australia’s premiere progressive house talents, Matty Doyle aka Matter lays claim to an impressive discography. The Melbourne resident has showcased his music on Cid Inc’s Replug Records, Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat Music and UK behemoth Anjunadeep. Maddy Hughes aka Funkform also calls Melbourne home and has been a fixture of Australian underground for over a decade. He has played a vital role in the evolution of the scene with a series of releases on local labels Open Records and Vapour Recordings, while also landing on Proton Music for a remix of Pole Folder’s ‘A Glimpse Into The Past’. Most recently Funkform’s ‘Synthesia’ was selected by Patrice Baumel for release on his highly regarded ‘GU:Berlin’ compilation. Although Matter and Funkform have remixed one another on more than one occasion in the past, their much anticipated ‘Trails’ EP marks their first ever collaborative project.

Comprised of three tracks it’s the title piece ‘Trails’ which leads the release off. Putting your emotional centres on high, a bed of warm beats and hip swinging bass set the stage for percussive waves and redolent rhythms. Airy atmospheres add an effervescent charm as the first act unfolds, while vocal wails and sensory saturating effects are gently teased leading into the main break. Coming to full realization yet tastefully indistinct, it’s a musical narrative for the soul searchers out there, delivering a profound emotional message through harmonic resonance and fragmented melodies, before shifting energy into a transcendent finale. Also included is the ‘Cosmic Dub Edit’ version which opts for a fuller more fluid groove, while keeping a greater emphasis on the atmospheric storyboard and effects narrative, both of which play off each other beautifully for a radiant glow.

Capping off the EP is the equally impressive ‘Nosedive’. In crafting another wonderfully contoured groove, the Aussie duo lock down another inviting foundation. Complemented with airy voices, hypnotic pulses and gentle percussive drive, it’s charming design qualities become hard to resist. Tastefully emotive yet irresistibly dreamy, harmonic phrases carry the journey into an emotive centrepiece. Short yet impactful it’s an interlude for the more astute listener, one where subtle decay and elegant chord changes unite, before segueing into a finale of hopeful reflection. It rounds out a hugely successful collaborative project from two of Australia’s most highly touted artists. A meeting of musical minds where the end result exceeds expectation and makes this a must have for any progressive music aficionado.
