A legendary figure within the underground dance fraternity, Pole Folder has been a regular contributor to the Proton Music catalogues over a 15-year period that began in 2006. Among a series of high-profile releases in recent years, 2018's "A Glimpse into the Past" and 2020's "Serengeti" have been outstanding original EPs. It is therefore with enormous pleasure that we welcome back Pole Folder in 2021 with a cast-iron progressive house classic in "Mara". Characterised by delicate percussive top line of delayed claves, gorgeous pads and vibrato lead take centre stage as a multi-coloured landscape gently develops in the early stages with reversed effects and subtle vocal effects. A driving beat enters the fray at the mid-point before a sumptuous bassline sequence creates a truly impressive backdrop for the melodic elements introduced in the first half, to revel in a club-friendly structure.

Little has been left unsaid in relation to GMJ & Matter's seismic contribution to Proton Music. At the beating heart of the label's progressive house output for 5 years, the duo has lit up the underground scene from their studio in Melbourne's idyllic environs. Together, they have been responsible for a host of collaborative original offerings since 2016's "Superposition" while remixes for Andre Sobota, Juan Deminicis and an August 2020 reworking of Nōpi's "Parallel Words", are now complemented by another classic remix. Using Pole Folder's central melodic themes with care and immaculate precision, the Australian pair have carved out a rhythmic structure that rolls gently across their 7-minute offering while themes from "Mara" sparkle across the sonic spectrum. Weaving a glorious sonic tapestry with golden threads from the original's bassline, the track opens up in cinematic grandeur at the breakdown with haunting original melodies and cascading arpeggio before exploding into life once more in the second half with energy and vitality.

Another artist requiring little in the way of introduction to the Proton faithful, Michael A has also been a regular with a cornucopia of original and remix production material that has lit up the label since February 2017's "Bright Hope" EP. A glittering three-year period followed before the Belarusian embarked on a new chapter with his "Fantasy" series, soon to see a third incarnation with "Volume, 3" on the horizon. Remixes for Andrea Cassino, James Warren and Imran Khan have complemented original production material as Michael now reciprocates with Pole Folder after the Belgian remixed "Orbital" in late 2017. Reimagining "Mara", Michael A uses the rhythmic elements of the original to impressive effect as he creates a new groove around the central clave loop. Evolving in elegant fashion a swathe of production material introduces new melodies that criss-cross each other in delicate fashion, blossoming into a sparkling arpeggio in the latter stages. Smooth pads and white-noise effects combine with the reversed motif so prominent in Pole Folder's work as the resonant bassline creates a familiar aural stamp.

As "Mara" takes centre stage, Pole Folder showcases a wealth of talent ably supported by GMJ & Matter and Michael A.

The inaugural release on -102C finds label boss The Cobb launching the imprint with a gorgeous organic house offering. Born out of the success of parent label Deepwibe Underground, -102C will serve as it’s organic house subsidiary, operating with the same level of quality and care. The Cobb first came to our attention in 2020 with a string of releases via Deepwibe Underground. Hailing from Saint Petersburg, Russia, Andrei Yakovlev aka The Cobb has been a primary figure in his cities nightlife for over a decade. As a resident DJ at the legendary Warrp Club, Andrei has delighted crowds with his exquisite programming skills and a fresh blend of organic house and melodic house and techno. With his first ever release landing in September of last year it’s been a quick rise for the Russian artist, notching two more singles and being remixed by progressive music star Dmitry Molosh, while earning the support of Sasha, Solomun and Guy J. Now embarking on a new journey with -102C, The Cobb launches the label with a track appropriately entitled ‘-102C’.

Although early into his career, The Cobb has already flexed his studio repertoire with productions that have touched on both progressive house and melodic house & techno. With ‘-102C’ he diversifies his portfolio further with his first venture into organic house and it does not disappoint. From warm, rhythmic beginnings comes redolent themes and exotic drums. It’s an amalgamation of free flowing organics, muted pianos, fragmented sax riffs and soulful vocal wails which proves most captivating, touching the listener with moments of hope and reflection, as a bed of groovy beats and chunky bass stabs translates that message to the dance floor. A fitting way to launch to a new imprint that most certainly has a bright future, so make sure you are following along. Highly recommended.

Wassu and Adisyn represent the incredible young talent being fostered and developed within America’s most vital electronic music hubs. New York and Miami have carried the torch for US house & techno for years, offering some of the most tight-knit and supportive dance communities in the world. As is evident from XYZ’s latest project, the Sun Kissed Computer EP, the two artistic metropolises show no sign of slowing down.

Venturing a bit deeper on the flip side, Full Moon entices us into a daze with swirling melodies in the early stages. The lull is short lived, however, as a vivacious bassline seizes attention at the first drop. The break slowly thins, before the sumptuous kick greets us again, offering pristine moments ignited in dance.

PREMIERE: Cream - Takoma (Original Mix) [Strange Town Recordings]

Lowbit records reaches its 250th release and it is fitting that label owner Erik Pettersson, AKA Sonic Union, take the reigns to celebrate this milestone with his track Naturality, which is complemented by remixes from Samuel L Session and Nichols.

The original mix starts with a range of swirling arpeggiated melodies and stabs. The emphatic bassline then arrives and the pulse starts to quicken as this nostalgic soundscape evolves. The drums builds and key changes accompany layer after layer of synths, guiding your senses on a meandering sonic journey. The shows stopping riff then rises out of this wall of sound and takes the track into the breakdown. The riff subsides and the tension builds, with new layers of infectious melodies and textures appearing from from every sonic angle, before the riff then re-emerges and leads us all helplessly into euphoria.

Swedish techno legend Samuel L Session needs no introduction and takes care of the first remix. His interpretation is stripped back and firmly aimed at the dance floor. The unforgettable bassline takes centre stage and drives the track forward with industrial drums and synth stabs building into the breakdown. There is a moment of calm as synths swirl around the aural landscape before normal business is resumed and the cacophony of drums and synths drive the track forward relentlessly.

The second remix is taken care of by label favourite Nichols. His peak time futuristic interpretation delivers from the outset with the infectious, rippling bassline pushing the track forward and emotive melodies and key changes combining to build the tension into the breakdown. The full melody is now unleashed along with vocal samples and atmospheric strings, creating the perfect space opera. White noise builds alongside bass stabs and soaring strings and when the track come crashing back in with all the elements in perfect harmony, there really is nowhere to hide.

A fantastic and varied EP, with interpretations that will appeal to a wide range of musical palates.
