Celestial Slingshot - featuring Dan Bitney of Tortoise

These are piano pieces I started in 2012.  After I did a few of these preludes and fugues, I decided to make at least 12, and then after that I made more for two pianos.  These tracks are from when I was composing them, and are not "final" interpretations.  They need a pianist who works very hard and not only performs them live, but goes into a studio to make an album.

Back in April of 2020, legendary Louisville guitarist Wink O'bannon reached out to me because he had enjoyed this "Downsized" Parlour demo I had recently posted. He said he wanted to lay down some guitar tracks on it and I was incredibly honored to have him offer this gift. Not long after he submitted this file which consists of 5 passes of the tune with different approaches each. I think it sounds great and hope to edit it together in a final form someday, but provide this as he presented it.  It may have been his last recording. I'm not sure. Sadly, he passed away on June 30, 2020 to complications of the fucker called Cancer. His curmudgeonly demeanor used to intimidate me, but I'm glad that in these past several years, we've bonded over discussions of music and idiocy sitting alone in Seidenfadens. I will miss him dearly.

“Oh, I recorded it immediately and dubbed on it without bothering to figure out the structure. Then I threw on some backwards guitars to go with the backwards bell (or was it just backwards decay?). But it wasn't violent enough. I promised aggression. So I did another pass which was marginally angrier. I'd call it "of marginal interest". It sometimes helps to know the structure.” 

“As soon as I can stop playing "Maggot Brain" over and over again, I'm on it. I've already done the dishes and watched every episode of "Time Team" five times, so here I go. More later.”

"...Nonetheless, because I have a sense of humor that involves self-deprecation, I'm hoping to attach my "sketches", in reverse chronological order, for your amusement. The early "angry" sketches veer into noise and guitar hero crap, which I think is fairly funny. I may be mistaken. I don't think any of this constitutes a worthwhile addition, though there is some potential counter-point in there somewhere, and low-end "surf guitar" is generally a nice thing if not overdone."

"It didn't really need me. Maybe the low end stuff accentuated a theme. As is usual, "Rock guitar" is if anything an annoying distraction and should be reserved for short bursts if employed at all. Sadly, I'm pretty good at that stuff. I've been off of FB for a few days. Lemme see what I can do. Other than having fun making noise, my approach is (usually): do no harm. For instance, I wanted to emulate what I call the "moaning voices", but I didn't want to bury them. and so on...."
