Aphir closely follows the release of her 2017 album ‘Twin Earth’ with a new, non-album cut, ‘Can’t Comfort’ backed by remixes from Provenance label mates, KAIA and Arrom.

On ‘Can’t Comfort’ Aphir notes: “I feel that a lot of people, young women especially, are taught that sometimes you have to exhaust yourself looking after other people before you're allowed to look after your own needs, and this song is a rejection of that”.

Nice Music presents the debut album proper from Melbourne's Thomas Hardisty, known for his varied and imaginative contributions to Nun, Constant Mongrel, Woollen Kits and more. Hardisty has quietly laboured on 'Peace In The Plaza' over the 2 years leading up to its release, taking time to channel the wordless profundity which fills this record in plumes of contemplative melody and warmth. His placid focus on understated expression on this recording seems to be fueled deeply by its decided concept; a study of the mind's quiet hours which bookend the working day's concerns. This essence slides glacially within a specific physical space, encapsulated entirely by the suburban valley in which Hardisty has found himself - Northcote's verdant suburban strips which back onto parkland and more namely, the somewhat notorious Northcote Plaza. The ghosts of concepts such as sobriety or daily responsibility linger with indolence in the distance while this music gives space to a purer consciousness, albeit within a commonly experienced inner city milieu. Hardisty wields the sleight of hand to animate this juxtaposition, intangibly and lovingly.

Took a Long Time

‘Your Heroine’ was originally written as a potential candidate for Aphir’s 2015 debut album ‘Holodreem’, but she decided that it needed something more - something that she wasn’t quite ready to give.

The track was instead gifted to one of her favourite artists, Tim Pearce, who recorded it as ‘Katie’ for his band The Wrst. What started life as a experimental choral piece was reinvented in Pearce’s hands as a Drones-inspired garage rock jam. Flash forward four years, and Aphir returned the favour by recording Tim’s song ‘Diving Bell’ with a video by long-term collaborator and film-maker Simone Thompson. 

Reminded of her previous collaboration with Tim, and of the song that got away, Aphir reopened the door on ‘Your Heroine’ and, drawing on more advanced production and mixing skills, found a new lease of life for the song. 

“Your Heroine is about the bottom-of-the-barrel exhausted feeling when you care deeply about someone and they don’t feel the same way about you,” she says.

‘Your Heroine’ comes as a double-headed single, coupled with Aphir’s version of ‘Diving Bell’.
