Co-founder of Norway’s future-facing Ute crew, Ekkel (Teo Bachs) has a front-row seat in the cockpit on their psychedelic flavoured quest. From their woodland beginnings they’ve staked a claim to freedom through music and community, and expanded to include brick and mortar club nights and a self-titled label for the release of their magnetic and mysterious techno sounds. Forest-bath electronics that take stock of Scandinavia’s ambient tradition and cross-pollinate it with a measure of acid, trance and midnight sun. Teo’s own steadily rising number of productions (side project H25 included) has fleshed out Ute’s vision with a personal twist, and there’s another three scheduled for the fall. The past few years too have seen him hard at work exploring the possibilities of sound in a lonely cabin as part of Solar Alliance, collaborating with S.O.N.S on Korean label Junction Forest and producing many more unreleased tracks, some of which you’ll hear here first for a very special number. It’s a wormhole trip that marches headlong from the shadows, shimmering and physical beats that heave and swell, tribal breaks that flit from track to track and build a cathartic mood that harks back to Ute’s woodland roots. Born in Osaka and now based in Tokyo, DJ MARIA. joins a decorated lineage of Japan's psychedelic elite, cut from a similarly explorative cloth as Wata Igarashi, Haruka and esoteric icons ¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$U and DJ Nobu. This nerdy sanctum of deep techno is a notoriously hard world to break into: only the very best make the grade. DJ MARIA.'s head-spinning sets emphasise why she's already part of the club firmament at home, and is now in the midst of a global breakthrough.

Her trademark is tapestries of acid, trance and techno that strike a perfect balance between vibrancy, impact and restraint. She bit the bug through a teenage discovery of DVDs showing legendary psytrance raves like Solstice and Vision Quest, yet it wasn't until 2014 that she started DJing, balancing gigs with shifts at Tokyo's Face Records and, as of late, motherhood.

Today, as well as producing and touring venues such as FOLD and Bassiani, she helps run two boutique forest festivals—Moment and Transcendence—both of which play a big part in upholding Japan's storied techno tradition. DJ MARIA. has reached these heights principally because of her exceptional talent as a DJ, which is on full display on this week's RA Podcast.

The two-hour mix is pure manna for psychedelic techno heads, though we're confident the depth of feeling, subtle pacing and seamless stitching will lure in fans from across the electronic spectrum. RA.971 is a total treasure—the latest wow moment from an artist destined to have a career littered with them.

Mark Peeters’ self-styled persona Caim exudes good vibes, an aura of love and is a guaranteed good night out. He’s a Dutch producer and jockey with pep in his step, bouncing from club to club, continent to continent, never taking himself too seriously, simply relaying sounds as they come and giving his crowds the fun they came for. Watch him play and there might just be one question left to answer, whether it’s him or those on the other side of his set-up enjoying themselves more. Years into his musical project he’s got the stamina of a newly minted selector, a ‘knob-twitching, crate digging’ beat enthusiast whose sets twist and turn from techno to trance to breakbeat to house. Alongside a residency at Amsterdam’s Breakfast Club and at the helm of his city’s Mood parties, he also runs Lonely Planet Records, a label on which his own EP is set for release on November 15th. The Medusa Hunter is set to be a futuristic, Goa-inspired record where the myths of the past and the bright lights of future converge. Little doubt it’s going to be a banger. Bassiani Podcast 243 brings his stream of references together in a groovy mash up that gently rises and falls, three hours and thirteen minutes of sweet-toothed electronic bliss, a set recorded live during his performance on the Horoom floor back in September.

Jeff Mills’ “The Bells” is one of the most iconic tracks in techno history, often called the genre’s anthem. The track was first played live by Mills in 1995 (e.g., at Liquid Room in Tokyo), but it wasn’t officially released until 1997 as part of the Kat Moda EP on his Purpose Maker label.
