Ghostek//VVV//Correspondences

Ghostek graced Shipwrec in 2011 with the excellent Easy Changes. Now the Russian producer returns to the Dutch imprint with two tracks for Deep Sound Channel. A steady drum pattern introduces the mysteriously shrouded “The Morning After.” Toms are hollowed out as persistent percussion builds into a lonesome and windswept plateau of otherworldly aspects. Ambient spills into Techno for this cerebral spiral of sounds. “2.5 Miles Abyss” steals the listener below matted waves. Melodies blur, harmonies washing out of focus as aural layers lap overhead. Northern skies of solid permanence shift against cylindrical coils and lost vocals as immense pressures rise and fall under Ghostek’s omnipresent control.

Slovakian techno knight Kepikei returns to Top Billin with 4 killer cuts. 

As a label, we mainly concentrate on the more ghetto-ed out sounds of club music and take pride in not diving too deep, because we want to keep things on the party aspective, but with Kepikei we make an exception. Don't get us wrong, this ep is full party material but it dives much more deeper than that. Inspired by the Berlin and Detroit techno culture, still yet enough London to have the hints of garage and bass music in the mix, this is a wonderful combination of club sounds we love. 

Originally from Slovakia and now residing in Los Angeles, Kepikei has already released 2 ep's on Top Billin and Voodoo Village, and he runs his own Sonic District imprint, concentrating on the sinister sounds of dance music. His tracks have been supported by a wide range of DJs and features at DJ Mag and Do Androids Dance have solidified this East European producers reputation as one of the most interesting guys in the warehouse techno scene. 

Like said, we don't often drop deep music on the label, so when we do you should expect it to be something out of the box as it is the case this time again. Happy listening.

To speak to Luca Daniel Schwarz aka LDS about his music is to be enthusiastically guided into a complex world of his own creation: clean and powerful techno which pulses with life from the textured patterns and drum sequences that have fills and accents that would make anyone who's picked up a set of drumsticks envious.

Yet this ecosystem of noise is deceptive; Schwarz's process for making music is very different to how a live drummer would create the same subtlety of performance. Forever researching new technology, Luca got deeply interested in different programming languages, and created a series of probability based music tools for manoeuvring sounds and sequencing.

Manipulating those probabilities takes a skillful alchemy, needing understanding of both musical structure and how the tools he devised work. To return to the drummer analogy, if the drummer is focussed and intentional in the moment of playing, then the method used in LDS tracks is almost diametrically opposed, with all of the intention coming in the assembly of the instruments, potential paths, and gateways; once play is pressed the music flows, following all the rules that were set in advance, not unlike a domino run or Rube Goldberg machine.

And like a domino run, the results are fascinating and, ultimately, fun: staccato vocals pop in and out in 'zipp prompt'; laser-like synths pulse; background noises sweep across the aural plane of the dub techno of 'diff, blockmix' and 'pow' adding texture that brings vitality all-too-easily missed out when complex mathematical processes become entwined with music creation. The high sensitivity to texture and rhythmic detail in Stadion Progg is multiplied further on Jean Redondo's remix - whose track, Hypersonic, was the backbone of 2023's 'yet' compilation on Tresor.

The balance between technology and a sense of fun might also come from the maker; it's not easy to overstate Schwarz's passion for what is now his favourite way to make music, "it never gets boring. There's always a moment of anticipation to see what actually emerges." And the true "power of 2" comes into play when the resulting music can be fed back through the system again and again, potentiating the music in exponential ways.

Hot off his killer 2024 remix of Tiga and Hudson Mohawke’s “BUYBUYSELL,”  UK-New Zealand DJ/Producer Keepsakes makes his proper Turbo debut with the Impossible (Eating the Sun) EP. From merciless techno bangers to caustic track titles that will absolutely shred your preconceived notions about the world and sneer at them as they writhe bleeding on the cold, hard ground, this release validates our label’s OCD-level commitment to living on the edge of something at all times.

The title track doubles as a massive forest rave bomb AND the No. 1 battle weapon for opening DJs looking to fuck over the headliner, while “Bongo Funeral” reimagines tribal techno as the chief export of a village ruled by emotionally unavailable gremlins. Next, “Snacks at Waco” makes skillful use of a hammering industrial beat to hammer home the importance of loyalty and community, and “Parasocially There for You” deftly soundtracks anxiety dreams about meeting your favorite podcaster. Finally, closer “Nimby Orgy” likely represents the very first sexual aftercare banger. NOTE: we’ve heard bad things about both NIMBYs and YIMBYs, and as such have adopted a militantly neutral position on the matter of who is f-ing and s-ing in our backyard. 

Given that Keepsakes is a vinyl-only DJ, we’ve done him the courtesy of making this release available both on vinyl and digitally. While this would have been an incredible opportunity to completely shut him out of playing his own tracks, we decided that this would be unfair to the music itself. Because at the end of the day, Turbo takes its marching orders from Harmony, Melody, Rhythm, and Timbre, and to betray even one of our ethereal masters would be tantamount to kicking our own vision square in the nuts. IOW: ain’t never gonna happen.

AISANA is a journalist, organizer of the public exhibition program Tazqara, and a resident of @bult-almaty.

She has shared the stage with ANIMISTIC BELIEFS, MALA JUNTA, Yanamaste, ORBE, residents of KHIDI, and other renowned DJs. You may have heard her at numerous parties and events, including ZVUK, bULt x SFX, 303, Chaikhana, Shulama, Vector, Weekender, ANTOH FOOTBALL (KG) and Groovy Shit.

AISANA does not confine herself to strict genre boundaries, but she often prefers to build her sets around dark hard sounds, groove, and fast rhythms.
