Los Angeles – This November, American cult hero DEV/NULL debuts on Trickfinger & Aura T-09’s Evar Records with MICROJUNGLIZM , an 7-track album that explores the power and beauty of darkcore, jungle tekno and breakbeat rave. Chopped drums, hairpin turns and alluringly emotional pads open up a time portal between the past and the future, decorated with haunting samples and musical Easter eggs that show off Boston-based Dev/Null’s deep history as a rave historian and scholar.
MICROJUNGLIZM ’s fantasy suite was written over the last year, arranged and sequenced entirely without a computer. Dev/Null f ell in love with Teenage Engineering’s PO-33 Pocket Operator – a portable, pocket-sized sequencer that he started using during his DJ sets to create special versions on the fly. The l imitations of making entire tracks inside the PO-33 immediately suggested the sampling techniques and stylistic hallmarks of early jungle, already one of Pete’s longtime obsessions.
“The PO-33 has some of the same low-fi sonic charm as retro gear used back i n the day,” Pete explains. “8-bitsamples, 11khz mono sound, kind of like an Amiga computer. It’s been really fun and exciting to have my own tracks to throw into sets – even if they’re raw, unfinished 3-minute things which get played once and never again. A
few of these tunes were done f or my sets at parties thrown by Aura T-09 i n L.A., so I ’m happy they’re coming out on her label.”
While these tracks may seem maximal, they are minimal to Pete’s ear – a departure from the intricately sliced and information-dense breakcore for which he’s known. The album emotionally bottles the essence of a bygone era with an individual palette of influences, from UK grime anthems to Italian horror soundtracks. Pete is not merely
trying to tap into the cultural zeitgeist for all things jungle and breakbeat rave – he’s already been here, stoking the fires of this scene since the early 2000s with his tastemaker blog (Blog to the Old Skool), his cult vinyl reissue label 8205 Recordings, and his deep dive radio shows: Demon Poetry on NTS and BTTO (with new-era jungle
torchbearer Tim Reaper) on Jungletrain.net. MICROJUNGLIZM itself follows on from the momentum created by Pocket Selector, Dev/Null’s 2020 outing with the PO-33 on the Modern Urban Jazz label, run by veteran UK drum ‘ n’ bass producer Justice. Written in 2021, “Time Turns Liquid” explores the perception of time-warping between periods of complete isolation and the realignment of what “normal life” is after such a confounding time; where what life was, is, and will be, starts to blur entirely.

The record also highlights the importance of being together as well as looking out for each other during such uncertain times. Currently, life has jolted itself back into a sense of normalcy, which feels like a pendulum swing into the present. Between these intervals, we pushed ourselves to the absolute limit whilst reaching creative peaks and valleys in ourselves that weren’t visible previously.

Across the release, time stretches are emphasised by the switch to half-time in every single song, which creates a purposeful moment of introspection: once the track returns to the original pace, the perception of time reminds listeners of the extra energies that take your body and mind to places yet to be unearthed. In Sha Ru’s own words: “The EP reflects upon the perception of how life starts to stretch and lose its shape.“

Just A Few Timez

Over the last three years, my life has undergone significant changes. Due to the pandemic and our work situations, my girlfriend and I had to leave Barcelona and return to my hometown, Figueres.

During that time, I quit my job and returned to my roots. It was an inspiring experience, as I found myself returning to the place where it all started after almost eight years of living in Barcelona.

Furthermore, I embarked on a journey to discover my own sound and explore new artists who influenced me. Musicians like Boards Of Canada, Photek, and Basic Channel resonated deeply with me during this time, and I learned a lot about the electronic scene of the 90s through their music.

My latest work, "Destined to Be," is a reflection of this growth. It has allowed me to express and manifest my thoughts and feelings in a positive and optimistic way.

Sound the @hyperdub klaxon! Label regular and @uiqmusic bossman @LeeGamble is releasing part two of his three-part album 'Flush Real Pharynx' this November.

The new chapter, an eight-tracker titled 'Exhaust', builds on the overarching narrative first introduced earlier this year on 'In A Paraventral Scale'.

On 'Exhaust' Gamble dives deeper into the concept and delves further into the world at hand. A world, we should add, stemming from his explorations into the 'Semioblitz' theory, which focuses on "the aggressive onslaught of visual and sonic stimuli of contemporary cities and virtual spaces".

It's nervier, neon-hued and more chaotic that the previous volume. In typically Gamble style it's an exploration of familiar, brain-aching real-world reflections and computer-generated sound design intended to provoke dancers instead of chin-strokers, with faint hints and intentional hues of jungle, rave and techno obliterated and rebuilt in shiny new mutated forms. 

On track 'Envenom' Gamble offers up a heady, woozy number that fuses those forms all together, all at one time, all in one track. A thrill-seeking tune that refuses to sit still, constantly changing course and tempo much like a race car speeding around a course right up until the end.
