Ten Seconds to Takeoff

His name was Chris, he was the tech guy
In a job that I did when I was 25
He taught me a little about web design
He was polite and we got on fine

He liked megadeth and watched anime
Had two little girls, talked about them most days
His folks were religious and lived by the sea
I think they were in the salvation army

My birthday came round, sent Chris an invite
For drinks and some food on a Saturday night
He turned up early, full of good cheer
Gave me a card then he bought me a beer 

I was anxious for my friends to like him
He was in a good mood and at first he fit in
But he drank very quickly and got very loud
And I felt bad I'd invited him out

One by one, my friends left for home
Till me, my friend Amy and Chris were alone
In a shit bar in the middle of town
Where we drank warm mojitos that cost us £6

Then all of a sudden, Chris burst into tears
Said his marriage was ending, he'd wasted those years
He was fighting for custody for both of his kids
Only saw them on weekends, said his wife was a bitch

Monday rolled by and we nodded to each other
I unfollowed his facebook, left my job for another
Sometimes I check in and see what he did
Think he remarried, now he has some step kids
