An extraordinary cast – Farah Alvin, Marc Kudisch, Judy Kuhn, Jessica Molaskey, Matthew Risch, Diane Sutherland, and Tony Yazbeck – brings a seminal work by composer Ricky Ian Gordon (The Grapes of Wrath, Intimate Apparel) to vibrant life. Sycamore Trees, Gordon’s American family saga exploring his own tumultuous upbringing and early adulthood, premiered in 2010 at Virginia’s Signature Theater, but no official recording was made at the time. Fortunately, original sound designer Matt Rowe recorded excerpts from a performance for archival purposes; now, recent advances in audio technology – and the eagerness of the original cast to come into the studio 14 years later to see the work properly preserved on disc – allow that “board mix” to be transformed into a genuine cast album: one that reflects both the spontaneity and suppleness of a live performance and the precision and expansiveness of a studio mix. The new album features the original orchestrations by Bruce Coughlin, with music direction by Fred Lassen and Andrew Resnick on piano. Released to coincide with Gordon’s acclaimed memoirs, Seeing Through: A Chronicle of Sex, Drugs, and Opera, this recording was produced by Tommy Krasker and Bart Migal, with audio restoration by Migal, and was made possible by the support and generosity of Ted & Mary Jo Shen, with additional funding provided by So-Chung Shinn. Off-Center production of William Finn and James Lapine's A New Brain, starring Broadway, film and television star Jonathan Groff (Hamilton, Spring Awakening, Frozen, Glee), along Christian Borle (Something Rotten!), Ana Gasteyer (Saturday Night Live) and Aaron Lazar (A Little Night Music, The Light in the Piazza). Audiences and critics alike welcomed the opportunity to revisit this deeply personal show, largely neglected since it premiered in 1998, and this new production – featuring some canny rewrites by Finn and Lapine – seemed more moving and invigorating than ever before; as New York magazine put it, "sharpening and tightening" the show allows its main theme, "the responsibility we have to use ourselves fully," to emerge more clearly. The score by the Tony Award–winner comprises "madcap, hallucinatory production numbers and gorgeous, tender ballads" (amNY); "both eccentrically individual and universal, these songs evoke the original, piquant talent" (The New York Times) of the composer/lyricist. Now PS Classics has preserved the "starry and beautifully sung" (NY Daily News) production of this 95-minute, through-composed show in its entirety for the first time, in a deluxe two-disc set.

Brian d'Arcy James, Jason Danieley, Kelli O'Hara, Jessica Molaskey, Jeff McCarthy and Victoria Clark star in the world premiere recording of Ricky Ian Gordon and Tina Landau's DREAM TRUE, conducted by Ted Sperling. Inspired by George du Maurier's 1891 novel Peter Ibbetson, DREAM TRUE was originally produced by the Vineyard Theatre in June of 1998, then in an extended run in the spring of 1999. It was subsequently performed in concert in March of 2004 at Cooper Arts, a contemporary music series produced by Howard Stokar; this recording – with its striking cast of Broadway stars and orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick – is drawn from that performance.

Composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim and librettist James Goldman’s landmark 1971 musical returns to Broadway in a production The New York Times raved “[makes] you realize anew just why Follies is one of the greatest musicals ever written.” A bittersweet look at the follies of youth seen through the eyes of age and experience, this new production stars two-time Tony Award-winner Bernadette Peters as Sally Durant Plummer, four-time Tony Award-nominee Jan Maxwell as Phyllis Rogers Stone, two-time Tony Award-nominee Danny Burstein as Buddy Plummer, three-time Emmy Award-nominee Ron Raines as Benjamin Stone and four-time Olivier Award-nominee Elaine Paige as Carlotta Campion, under the direction of Eric Schaeffer. The cast of 41 is backed up by a 28-piece orchestra, conducted by James Moore. Now, PS Classics and producer Tommy Krasker – who has helmed over a dozen Sondheim cast recordings – preserve this unparalleled work of genius in an expansive two-disc set, complete with 52-page full-color booklet with essay, synopsis, lyrics, production photos and a brief note from the album producer.

PS Classics continues its forgotten musicals series, which kicked off with Vincent Youmans’ Through the Years and Kay Swift’s Fine and Dandy, with the world premiere recording of the 1926 “bright new summer musical delight” KITTY’S KISSES.
This tuneful charmer beguiled Broadway audiences in its day, spawning several hit songs, but like so many musicals of its era, it’s faded unfairly into obscurity. The music is by Con Conrad, who took home the first Academy Award for Best Song (“The Continental” in 1934); the lyrics are by Gus Kahn, whose standards include “It Had to Be You,” “I'll See You in My Dreams,” and “Makin' Whoopee.” The book was co-authored by celebrated librettist Otto Harbach (Roberta, Desert Song, and No, No, Nanette!).

Now PS Classics has assembled Broadway’s best musicians and an all-star cast – including Rebecca Luker (Mary Poppins), Danny Burstein (South Pacific), Andréa Burns (In the Heights), Christopher Fitzgerald (Young Frankenstein), Victoria Clark (The Light in the Piazza) and Kate Baldwin (Finian’s Rainbow) – to bring this Jazz Age hit vividly to life.

Building on a deep friendship forged on and off the stage, Broadway’s Rebecca Luker and Sally Wilfert have recorded an intensely personal celebration of womanhood in all its complexities and varied expressions. Adapted from the show of the same name, All the Girls is framed by songs from such theater luminaries as Stephen Sondheim, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Fred Ebb and John Kander, highlighted by a delicious and delirious medley of tunes from shows featuring iconic female duets. But Luker and Wilfert enrich the tone and expand the scope by also embracing art songs, cabaret material and even settings of poems written expressly for them by the show’s music director, Joseph Thalken (who expanded the orchestrations from four to ten pieces specially for this recording). In doing so, they manage to celebrate women “in all of our messy wonderfulness,” as they put it, with an empathy and optimism that radiate through the material. Individually, Luker and Wilfert’s dazzling voices and keen dramatic senses animate the tenderness, humor and resilience in these songs, while together their personal bond produces duets of extraordinary sensitivity and beauty.
