"O Sinner Man" is a Negro Spiritual.  This is movement 3 from my 7-movement piano sonata ευαγγελίου (Euangelion -- Greek for evangelism).  In all but the 6th movement, the Biblical numbers 1, 3, 7, and 10 are used in rhythm, meter, chords, and form.  Here, the Biblical number 6 is used a lot -- representing sin.  In some places there are 6 layers of sound, dividing the piano into 6 registers.  Some of these are virtually unplayable.  The harshness and extreme complexity represents the horror of evil.  In the coda flames of Hell fire rise and threaten to consume the sinner.  Then Morse Code is used to spell out S.O.S. and then Jesus Saves.     An extra performer can be used.

This is the 4th in my series of Chorale Etudes.  I wrote these for my family members, beginning with my father and mother and including all my siblings, even the one who died at childbirth.  This one is for Carrie, my only sister.  Each of them is based on their favorite Christian hymn tune.  In this piece I mix in O God, Our Help In Ages Past.

By "Chorale Etudes" I'm referring to the concept of taking a hymn tune and surrounding it with an elaborate fabric of music.  J.S. Bach wrote hundreds of Chorales.  These 7 of mine are studies on how to embed the tune so it is virtually hidden.

While studying music composition in school I had a motorcycle accident and broke my right wrist.  I couldn't do any writing or piano playing for months.  That gave me the idea to compose these pieces for the left hand only.  As a whole, they utilize 3 musical materials: chromaticism; intervals of the perfect fourth; and second inversion major chords.  Not every one of them uses all three.

This weird piece is the result of my recording my daughter and myself talking using Finale music software.  It was not an analogue recording of what we said, but rather a MIDI recording of the pitches and rhythms of our sound spectrum.  This means that the fundamentals of each pitch was only one of the many partials recorded.  I took the bizarre result and assigned instruments to it and freely copied, cut, and pasted it into multiple tracks.

This piece is in 15/8 time, usually using 5 beats of 3 eighth notes per beat.  It displays what can be done with chords stacked in 4ths to produce a sometimes artificial tonality.  It experiments with alternate rhythmic divisions, polyrhythm, polymeter, and sometimes polymeter at the same time as polyrhythm, giving the impression of two completely independant tempi.  As the piece progresses, the texture becomes thicker and sometimes more dissonant.  The tension builds to the point that it finally resolves into stacked perfect 5ths.  The result to my ears is bells -- thus the title.  There are of course no bells in Heaven welcoming us.  By "saints", I mean Christians as defined in the Bible.
