February 5th 2016 will see influential Leftroom label boss Matt Tolfrey make a brilliant debut on Jonny White’s vital No.19 Music label. Featuring three essential new cuts,the EP is a perfect introduction to Tolfrey’s place in the No.19 stable.

Matt Tolfrey has long been making headlines with his off kilter, dark and involving DJ sets everywhere from WMC to BPM. He has also mixed it up for the famed fabric series and has put out a stellar debut album featuring fine collaborations with some of
the biggest names in house, from Marshall Jefferson to James Teej. 

With this latest release he shows the world he is a master of the groove once more. They don’t come much better than opener ‘Oxytocin,’ which is seven minutes of deep, stripped back and meandering tech funk. A snaking lead synth is spooky and
absorbing, darkened beats rumble below and scattered hits and eerie sounds pepper the groove with a late night freakiness. It’s a truly wonky tune to twist things up in early hours.

The excellent ‘Eye of the Storm’ is a more up tempo, agitated track with coarse claps and increasingly pressurised drums sure to have dancefloors in raptures. It’s a perfect fit for this label and is another brilliantly left of centre offering from Tolfrey that
cannot fail to get under your skin.

Lastly, ‘Let’s See Double’ is a bubbling, busy house track with molten synth lines,
rubberised drums and spoken word snippets musing on drug taking experiments. It would fit perfectly in a weird and restless selection from Craig Richards and frankly would be a standout inclusion in any DJ set.

No 19. Music never fails to lead from the front and this new set of tracks from Matt
Tolfrey, undoubtedly one of the world’s best, continues in that good tradition.

It was probably only a matter of time until eclectic producer and Mannequin label founder Alessandro Adriani would join up with Stroboscopic Artefacts, since both are heavily invested in taking electronic music listeners outside of their comfort zone and into a world of unpredictable outcomes. Adriani’s debut EP for the label, Enter the Fire, is the first evidence of a new mutation in the Stroboscopic DNA, as can be seen by a shift in Ignazio Mortellaro’s design work for the label (it is in keeping with the previous horticultural theme of the records, but now features directly scanned objects - in this case a single leaf features on the cover). 

Adriani’s work has appeared at a time when, even as electronic music continues to expand into all kinds of new territories, many still associate its signature sounds (analog synthesis, quantized percussion etc.) exclusively with the time in which they first began to make a significant cultural impact. Fortunately, innovators like Adriani ignore this belief that sounds must remain harnessed to a specific point in human history: his attitude towards music making is that the changing circumstances of our environments always have the potential to put a fresh spin on the sounds associated with a previous time and place. In other words, he does not cater to any conceptions of “retro” or dreams of future past. His curriculum vitae as a producer, event organizer, and label owner all comes back to this ethos of getting beyond the “museum exhibit” mentality to music and keeping it vital in the here and now.

The music on Enter the Fire will not disappoint fans of the hard-edged, aerodynamic style that Adriani has perfected over the years: his skillful distillation of the most impactful elements from genres like EBM, acid, darkwave and industrial is on display the moment that the needle lands upon the grooves of the opening track “He Who Harnesses The Souls”. The track’s cycling sense of urgency builds as one hectic sequence is screened on top of the other, with the topmost layer providing a gorgeous melodic sheen to it all. This is followed up with “Rituals (707 EBM Version)” a tense martial stomp designed around a classically effective sequence of 16th notes and brusing kick drum. As these elements intensify the feeling of inhuman discipline through a series of flanging and filtering techniques, chilly phantom noises hint at a state of profound mental and physical exhaustion. 

The B-side shows that music with sheer bionic strength it isn’t the only card Adriani has to play, either within his repertoire as a whole or on this single slab of vinyl. It kicks off with a (relatively speaking!) more contemplative version of “Rituals,” a deviously designed mirage of shifting audio sands in which many different elements (i.e. some hesitant guitar figures, wordless vocalizations) come into view but remain tantalizingly out of reach. The program’s conclusion, “Astronomy”, evokes something more like the cultivated patience of a private investigator on a stakeout (one who is, of course, equipped with all necessary means of technological surveillance). Continuous high-frequency tones, magnified sections of surface noise, and a multitude of other encoded signals all descend on the listener and like a sort of dub music for the ‘peak information’ age.

The next move from Artefakt (@artefakt-official) and Delsin is a selection of their label back catalog remixed by four producers that can’t do no wrong in modern techno days. The artists they chose are all debutants on the label where it feels like a perfect fit. It resulted in a collection of involving drum grooves, hypnotic loops, smoky dub techno and cinematic ambient.

Forest Drive West (@forest-drive-west) is up first, coming off the back of a fantastic album on Livity Sound that showcased his hi fidelity take on bass, jungle and techno. Here he flips 'The Fifth Planet' into eight broody minutes of involving drum programming and groaning synth drones. A subtly uplifting tune thanks to the gorgeous pads in the background, but real bass heavy system music when it comes to the dance floors. Swedish producer Evigt Mörker (@evigtmorker) turns 'The Fifth Planet' into an utterly hypnotic, rolling, lumpy kick drum workout that pulls you into a state of techno meditation.

Paris deep techno stars Polar Inertia (@polarinertia) then remix 'Tapeloop' into a cavernous world of smoky dub techno. The vast emptiness sucks you in and the deft sound designs make for atmospheric, cinematic additions to this mental trip. Closing is Spazio Disponibile artist Valentino Mora (@valentinomora), whose slowly unfolding odyssey is built on gentle hand drums and spooky pads and take you deep into some oceanic abyss.

Helena Hauff's debut EP on her own label Return To Disorder, named Living With Ants features four electro tracks, that all vibrate in unison, such as a ripple that forms from throwing a stone into water. We choose "The Brush" track
Isochronic bass with fast pulse in the depth and an alive organic trapped acid into a liquid bottom climb out.  Synth tones that spread out imposing spherically from their source in all directions and melody under the depth qualities of the mysterious dark distance of a celestial body.
