Anthony Rother - Leben

BXP and Filibalou provide the next Phase Group mix from Bologna. Born in Sardinia, but now based in Bologna, Carlo Mameli, aka BXP heads up the excellent Random Numbers label. Through his own productions and curation of the label he explores the multiple possibilities in electronic music production, with a closer look at its IDM side, ranging from ambient to techno, electro, and acid. Filibalou is a vinyl collector and producer, influenced by the contemporary drifts of kraut, IDM and trance. He has produced releases on Glasgow's Invisible Inc label and runs the Mint Sound party series in Bologna.

This mix moves through the sounds of their contemplation on the return to communal dancing, reopening of clubs and shared music experience and was recorded by the two of them one evening in the company of friends. Thanks guys.

Up up up with the energy we go, as our focus for today’s premiere looks to Peruvian DJ and producer Luis Leon alongside fellow Blankhaus co-owner Unseener for their latest, Golden Gardens.

The title track is a boppy little number, immediately grabbing your attention with filtered down vocals before wasting no time at all jumping into the main groove. With snappy shakers and percussion driven by an undulating bass line, the staccato melodic stabs give an air of urgency and lend a boost of energy like a musical espresso.

Luis Leon & Unseener’s Golden Gardens release will be out on Blankhaus, July 28th.

PREMIERE: Luis Leon & Unseener  - Golden Gardens [Blankhaus]

“Astrophel” is undoubtedly, as the name hints, a track for star lovers. It’s a peak-time dreamscape whose rolling synth arpeggios, paired with a forward-moving beat, will move any dancefloor or make you dream up one while gazing at stars. Through being outgoing , but in “slow release” so to say, feet and phantasy are being engaged simultaneously. Appropriately, the track is one of four on the release that inaugurates Jozef K’s new label Dreaming Forever. The specific beauty of “Astrophel” is that the magic is released steadily and with patience over 8:20, playing with its intensity. During this time, we dance starstruck, reminded of timeless disco tracks but with more edge - which makes “Astrophel” an amazing track to bridge different moods during a DJ set. Jozef K has been known for releases on labels like Sungate and LNOE and collaborations with Tin Man, amongst others. 

Founding Dreaming Forever marks a new phase in his career, focusing on his own, but mainly on the productions of other artists. The first release DF001 comes with two tracks by Jozef K and remixes by Tin Man and Skudge.

Close your eyes and merge into Benedikt Frey’s 'Fastlane'. Imagine sitting in the driver’s seat of a an automobile, one with exceptional horsepower and torque, as you stare out the windshield at the red light, warping in fata-morgana a mile down the road. It’s a straight-away, a black top with two lanes, and against your better judgment you decide to floor the gas. No hesitation in your muscle, your ankle or the ball of your foot, which you now realize is some kind of universal pivot, the first point of contact fusing your body with the will of machine. In this moment you’re in awe that you, a human, an animal, grew from pond scum into something so advanced as to engineer this thing, a mechanical beast capable of overwhelming power and exhilaration. But you also feel a seductive dread, an outside force diverting you from caution toward a dangling carrot of curiosity, asking yourself, ‘How far can I take this thing?’ The dread, now a constant, is numbed, equalized by an adverse intoxicating gratification. You feel both sensations in real time, however, rather than take responsibility for yourself, friends, family and innocent bystanders, you cement your foot to the floor and lean your head back. Noise around you fades to mute. Smell the benzene-scented air, feel the wind on your face, the menacing vibration of the vessel you control beneath you and every grain of asphalt under its tires. This mile has now lasted an eternity and you’ve left your body for some objective view, as if watching climax of a film. Past the point of no return, you embrace abandon and lean into fate. The film becomes slow motion, a crawling pace so mesmerizing you convince yourself of an option to eject yourself from this madness, but as you finally let go of your last morsel of fear, you run the red light head-on into the nucleus of a fantastic glistening sculpture of torn metal, glass, oil, broken dreams and heartache. 'Fastlane' may be just drum machines and synthesizers if you’re timid, but listen harder and know the catastrophic reality of existence, a wreckage so gruesome we dare not rubberneck, but afterall it is our nature to stare.
