Psilo aka Seoulhunter - Scintillate (2014 Ghettofunk Mix)

This mix took many months to create and is a follow-up to my previous mix "Just A Sample". My idea for the mix was simply to create something unique using tracks that mean something to me personally. With the exception of being a diverse ghettofunk-style production, there are no specific genres associated with this mix and I simply included tracks that I wanted without any regard to release date or artist popularity.

I want to give a big special thanks to all of my friends who have supported how big of a project this was for me, and to my heroes of the genre as well as my main musical influences: Slynk, Dj Scallywag, Fort Knox Five, A.Skillz, Opiuo, The Captain, Dusty Tonez, Sammy Senior, Dook & Monostereo, Shaka Loves You, Eileen Lewis, Funkee Wadd, Girl Talk, DJ Shadow, DJ Joshuah, Z-Trip. And my friend Kiddo who made me realize you didn't need long mixes to be fun, eventually leading me to my style.

Special thanks goes to my friend Sarah Lee DeRemer who stuck with me the whole time and gave me so much support and hope and effort to actually create something that I previously believed I couldn't pull off something I was proud of. Thank you Malcolm Kotwal as well! 2 Hard drive crashes and complete erasure of all previous work made this one a bitch and a half, but I'm finally done and am looking forward to putting out a lighter-hearted summer mix soon.

I've finished a new mix that has been in the works for 4 years conceptually. I needed to take a big break and think about how to improve, as my last release received positive reviews from most friends but I know that it was too over-sampled and a bit maximal. I consider it a sophomore slump as my first mix before that was pretty good even though it had over 200 samples. I tend to go nuts on the post-production.

So this mix takes it back a step and focuses on the primary tracks themselves with no gimmicks, layering one track on top of another, up to 3 or 4 at a time. There are tons of samples because that's what I do, but it's not anything near my other mixes quantity of madness cuts and edits. The title of the mix refers to how many layovers I've had while making this mix, as well as how the music itself is structured (layers upon layers), and quite a bit of ethnic music.

This is by far the best product I've put out musically and a huge reason why that is is that Maida Gayle assisted and added to the mix the entire time throughout. When I started to get too crazy with adding things, she toned me down. When I needed to mix-in something interesting, she had ideas I never would have thought of. Thank you so much for the help Maids!

If you find this mix interesting at all, please share it on your wall. I tried to make something really unique that I haven't heard before and I think in terms of cross-genre mixes, which are hard in the first place, I'm at least content with how it came out.

Layovers - Psychedelia-Laced Dark Tech-Trance

Neuron is my take on the very temporary and constantly changing niche world of psychedelic drum and bass and I used tracks from producers that I've been following for a while and know and love.
 I am much happier with this mix over any mix I've done and I'm looking forward to progressing technically with other genres.
It progresses from harder psychedelic and slight neuropunk DNB the latter half which is more fluid and relaxed.
The last few songs are cerebral but not intense. I doubt I could ever make a mix that stays too constant the whole way through.

Neuron - Psychedelic & Neurofunk DNB Mix

This is an eclectic mix that I've definitely spent more time on than any previous music project I've ever done tenfold. The amount of weeks I've put into collecting samples, picking songs, and arranging in various programs is something I previously thought I wouldn't have the patience to do and actually pull off in a way that I felt satisfied with. In my head, I consider it my first official mix.

It's also something that has shown me I really, truly am not able to follow genre guidelines and present a compilation of songs that are apart of too strict of a "genre". This mix is Classic Rock,  Glitch Hop, Ghettofunk, Jazz, Oldskool Funk and Hip Hop, among others, and the influences are broad and contradictory.

Many thanks and props to Fort Knox Five, the Dancefloor Outlaws, and anyone in the UK Ghetto funk scene (ghettofunk.co.uk) for bringing so many versatile elements to so many different tracks.  This is the first time I can say a mix I've made is up to par with what I've wanted to put out. Also DJ Scallywag, my hero, who is the first one I personally started listening to that mashed genres up however he wanted.

Over 350 individual samples from music, movies, and audio books span throughout the mix, which is where the title comes from.

This mix was born out of sadness and confusion, leading to happiness and freedom. It's a positive and fun dance mix while containing a lot of darker hidden aspects from my own life and recent breakup with my fiance. I believe it's my best work but I would appreciate any and all comments, positive and negative and constructive, and I hope that it's fun enough to take people's mind off of the world outside.

Thanks as always to the Ghettofunk community which 10 years ago was the most powerful catalyst for me attempting to get into weird mashups, remixing theory, and ultimately leading to a minor level of production which has culminated within this mix as my skills have grown slightly. Thanks to No Left Turn and Luna C of Kniteforce for being the 2 most unique DJ's I can think of when it comes to throwing in samples and showing individual style that is unlike the rest. And thanks to all of my friends and family who have helped me out in the past musically and are still involved in the present.
