Very few musical acts achieve the levels of unanimous acclaim of Autechre. The English duo of Rob Brown and Sean Booth are not an act you simply like; they are an act you love, fawn over and dream about. They’ve got themselves here over the course of the last 28 years, and have done so by amassing a discography that’s about as perfect, influential and accomplished as could ever be possible. A key Warp label act from day one, they have released tens of albums, well over a ten EPs and have featured on a dizzying amount of essential compilations, mixes and remixes in that time. Without their contribution to the IDM canon, its fair to say the modern musical landscape would look very different. 

Rhythmic but experimental, absorbing yet abstract, cerebral and psychedelic, their ever evolving output is up there with the likes of fellow luminaries Boards of Canada and Aphex Twin as some of the most important in all of electronic music. As well as being fine craftsmen in the studio, Autechre are also revered live performers who really manage to conjure up captivating and otherworldly soundtracks that marry heavy bass with ethereal melody. The pair themselves do not care for genre, but suffice it to say that they have mastered everything from hardcore to ambient to glitch and plenty of indescribables in between. 

When the pair recently laid down an impressive set at Dekmantel Festival, we asked if they might be up for a doing an early inspiration mix, whereby they put together a collection of the sort of electro and hip hop tracks that turned them on as youths. At first they hesitated, pointing out that "we don't do strictly retro stuff, it's too corny.” But alas, a few days later, a huge file landed in our inbox… That file is a 4 hour and 18 minute mix that basically encapsulates not just Autechre’s own influences, but also acts as a fine anthology of the greatest electro sounds of all time. Every sub genre imaginable gets touched upon along the way, with nods to forefathers like Kraftwerk, killer cuts from Man Parrish, classics from Newcleus and retro gold from the likes of The Beat Club. It is a thrilling ride and a truly rare treat that reminds us just why we love Autechre, as well as shining a light on a vast genre that often pays second fiddle to house and techno.

As the dust finally begins to settle after the release of Pan-Pot's massive album 'The Other', it's time to unleash a collection of heavy hitting reworks from the best and brightest stars of todays techno elite. Through careful consideration and an acute attention to detail, we couldn't be more elated to confirm ten artists we know and love to contribute their unique vision to Second State's first ever remix package.

Kicking things off with a heavily twisted alteration of 'Attention' is Nicole Moudaber and it's a tangled, dark trek through dense acoustic layers of audible madness. Next up is the Hamburg duo

Extrawelt with their twist on 'Optimistic Grey' and they deliver a beautiful blend of emotion and groove they are synonymous for.

Following suit is another passionately romantic number from man of the hour, Stephan Bodzin, and his take feels like floating through a sea of clouds, resulting in a timeless classic to be a focal point in any set for years to come.

Next in line is Ray Kajioka's take on '808 Nirvana' and it's a cosmic ride, ripe with swirling atmospherics laid over big churning drums and rolling cymbals.

Following up on the second 12“ of this LP is a man who needs no introduction: Carl Cox. And in true Coxy fashion he turns 'Riot' into just that: a big room, tension building monster!

Broken Engine' is the next track to get worked over and Wigbert delivers a stunning mix of shimmering tones and growling bass resulting in a lush venture through a cosmic backdrop of flickering stars in deep space.

Joseph Capriati ensues with his vision of 'Fugitives' and he brilliantly keeps the vibe of the original yet adds his trademark big room flair to take it to another level of driving euphoria.

Enlisting the talents of Alan Fitzpatrick to remix one of the slower listening tracks on the album turned out to be magic. With his signature percussion, Fitzpatrick takes the parts and creates a dive deep into sultry smooth waters of seduction.

The first of our last two remixes, which are digital exclusives, come from Paul Ritch and he delivers a grinding rendition of 'Riot', expertly crafted for the more euphoric peak time occasions.

Last and certainly not least is a man on the rise, Kevin Knapp with his twist on his own collaboration with Pan-Pot: 'Get In'. An expertly crafted tech house jam exploding with energy and attitude perfect for any moment, day or night, indoors or out.

No matter the time or place, there is something here for everyone and we are truly fulfilled and honored to present this package of cutting edge artists to celebrate this landmark moment. We know you will enjoy!

Solid Steel Radio Show 22/1/2016 Hour 1 - Autechre

This mix is essentially Techno for the Junglist Sample-Spotters, but also a vague history of techno – from Kraftwerk, through Detroit and Acid house, into Sheffield Bleep and Euro Techno of the early 90s (the era I grew up with), with bits of ambient, house, rave and hardcore thrown in. Interspersed with plenty of random tracks, break loops and samples to enrich the experience, and loads of reconstructions and references to classic hardcore and jungle (SL2, The Untouchables, Nebula 2, DJ Mayhem, Peshay, Intense, D.O.P.E. and Nasty Habits among others).

Back in 2016, Skee Mask and Zenker Brothers spontaneously attempted to play together at an afterparty in Prague, but after ten minutes the electricity failed. Two years later they finally had the opportunity to play a joint extended set for the first time - at Unsound Kraków 2018. The three DJs closed Saturday night in Hotel Forum with an expansive set building on adventurous forms of techno, jungle and broken beat, combining the collective interests of Ilian Tape. The set kicked off at 4am in the Ball Room.

By the 70s Ibiza had already developed into an international party destination. The fact that the third largest of the Balearic Islands is what it is today - namely, the absolute benchmark for star DJs par excellence - cannot be discussed without mention of Sven Väth. Even in the early 80s, more than anyone else in Germany, he stood for the idea that being a DJ could be more than just a profession, a vocation or a purpose in life: it’s akin to a magician of the dancefloor, a shaman who conjures up the crowd. As a resident of 'Dorian Gray' - the legendary club at Frankfurt Airport that was modelled on New York‘s 'Studio 54 - he shaped the image of the DJ like no one else in Germany at the time. Even more influential were his broadcasts on hr3 Clubnight. Without the radio shows that Väth produced there between 1990 and 2004, the seed of techno in Germany would never have been sown to such an extent. With his first club "Omen", Sven wrote techno history over 10 years. Soon after, the "Babba", as Väth has been lovingly and respectfully called in the scene for a long time, set new standards in international club culture with Frankfurt‘s 'CocoonClub', inspired by his 'Cocoon Ibiza' events. Pioneer, visionary, ambassador, identification figure, DJ, label operator, club owner, impresario... over a career spanning four decades, Väth has developed many facets and yet has always remained true to himself. The fact that all over the world Berlin music temples of this kind, from 'Tresor' to 'Watergate', are celebrated as the epitome of party culture, is in no small part due to Väth's influence. Like no other, Väth has given the landscape of electronic music a face - always evolving, yet unmistakable.

We need to tell you about “Shiftings”. It is a beautiful new album by Harald Björk.
We knew it had been germinating but timing is everything you know. When Harald gave us this album it simply lit the office up. Cocoon Recordings were right to be patient. It blew us away.
Haralds early ideas circled around since “The Sound Of The 17th Season” and then evolved into this brave music that belongs in the here and now, also representing the organic progression of the relationship between Harald and Cocoon Recordings. It is an intricate album about communication and soul and new mysteries. It is about sharing. And we want to share it with you. We hope it will embrace you as it did us and perhaps point some light to the end of this long murky tunnel. It is that good. We really hope you enjoy "Shiftings" by Harald Björk.

Yu Yu is a tiny box room in CDMX. Since its opening in 2017, it’s been the home of electronic music in Mexico, welcoming everyone from Darwin to dBridge. In addition to the club, there’s also Yu Yu Record Store, a cosy vinyl stockist that champions the same flavours as its adjoining venue. 

Nico shared a percussive techno mix with us to represent the sound of Yu Yu.

Capturing the spirit of the Steel City he grew up in, Manchester-based artist 96 Back is up next in our series. 

Now based in Manchester, 96 Back has been surrounded by Bleep legends his whole life so it’s no surprise that he has become one of the most exciting producers in the UK. At 18 years old he released his first EP on CPU Records and was quickly followed by his debut DJ set at the Boiler Room label showcase. In 2019, he put out his debut album ‘Excitable, Girl’ which was highly acclaimed across the board, it was one of my favourite LPs to have been released that year, and made him a one to watch. Following releases on Hypercolour, Happy Skull and Fever AM, the UK’s underground gem returns with his first release for local label Local Action ‘Sugilite’ - out now.
