Ethereal Sunrise

From the live houses of the Jing to busking in tunnels (Granted, the 33.3% donation rate was based on the fact that he had removed his stifling white collar shirt and was dancing bare chested) in Singapore, Psychedelic Revolution (aka Psyche Rev) is a one man project that likes most things such as alt r&b and alt rock. Made it as a semi finalist in the 'Song of the Year' competition in 2022 with his song 'Cassius' and a finalist in 2023 with his song 'We'll Go Down'. Tastes like Kung Pao Chicken. Looks like a cross between Brag Pitt and Heath Leather. Smells like team spirit. Feels like baby powder. Oh the music. Yeah, it sounds good.

Chapter V of V: Another Way to Die
It was a sunny day when I stepped on the rooftop bar of Bill’s birthday party. There were guys. A guy in mini shorts and a pink t shirt. He was either a hipster or gay. Since I went to NYU, you never know. It was also towards the end of covid. I greet an old Italian man.

“Ciao.”
“Ciao.”
“Wait Bill told you he was bi?”
“Yes.”
“That’s code for gay.”
“Oh.”

More people arrive and there’s 30 people there. Belle is also there and Bill has arrived. Plenty of Crystal to go around.
Usually, the protocol for a party is that we say hi to each other. Enjoy the music and alcohol. Hook up if we’re lucky.
Here, we sit around a table and the host announces, “Everyone, introduce yourselves by sexual orientation and your favorite sexual position. Let’s hear what you guys have been looking up on PornHub.”

“I’m a boring straight guy.”
It is my first time doing this and I’m going to give myself credit for doing it without much unease.
So I say it. My favorite sexual position.
And a chorus of “ooooh”s and “bad boy” greets me. No it isn’t anal or receiving head.

I take a drink and blow out smoke. Walk over and sit down facing her.

We talk about the party. 006 may have me beat on quantity but we’ll both argue for quality and I got speed ahead of him.So, fastest hook up? 3 secs. Catalan girl had her hand in mine and I kissed her. That was Barcelona when I was 19.
So, as of now, 1 minute has passed. My theory as an introvert is that the more I talk the more energy I exert. So, best to cut to the chase.

I place my right hand in her hair and kiss her.

“You know my birthdays on Christmas.”
“Yeah you told me before…dumbass” I tease.

“Doesn’t he have a girlfriend?” Definitely would have sent her to Q if she liked him. Just gotta be done here first.
Then, a lesbian approaches and warns her. “You’re a sweet girl and this man is evil.”
I smirk.
I am getting cockblocked by a lesbian.

Belle lets me touch her anywhere.
I kiss and grab handfuls of her hair.
“Hey….gently.”

 Henry is pretty desperate and persistent with his attempts to get with me. I eventually say, “tell you what. I’ll let you kiss me on the cheek.”
So he does that and then begins to lick my ears while I lean to the left and make out with Belle. Pretty soon more men approach me and ask me if I’m sure I’m straight and not bi.
‘I’m sure.’ The guy to the right ain’t doing anything for me. 

Go talk to guy in the shorts.He says he’s in the fertilizer agriculture field.
“Well I do visit refineries that produce the sulfuric acid to make fertilizer. 

A day later:
Check WeChat moments and graduate 1 has shared ‘My Medicine’ by The Pretty Reckless on her WeChat moments.
“Gotta woman to your left and a boy to your right.” Fitting.

I get a text from Henry inviting me to a dinner. I reply saying “Apologies, I am busy with work.”

“The job is done and I’m sure she’s still alive. I won’t let anyone reduce my self esteem again.”

You’re wondering whether 006 and I are still friends?
Well he came over from Shanghai to visit with Josh Lee who also happened to return at the same time. Josh is great. He’s one of the higher ups at Perfect World. A man who at that point was in a disintegrating relationship with his middle school sweet heart. It had been over 10 years.

Hop from Great Leap Brewery to the underground jazz bar at Lucky Street to Peco Peco. On the way to Peco Peco 006 plays ‘Bittersweet Symphony’ by The Verve on his phone.
“Wow, this is a great place.”
006 introduces us to An An and Mitz, the two lovely owners. Since Mitz went to 世青 we have a lot of friends in common.

“Man, gotta listen to some real metal like Slipknot and Korn.”-006 says with utmost conviction.
*Josh and I burst out laughing at him*
“Say that again?”
“What’s wrong?”
“That’s not what the elitist metalheads will classify as real metal.”
“So what is real metal then?”
“Like Sabbath, Maiden, and early Metallica. Don’t worry we’re not elitists. I do like Slipknot.”
006 and I try to figure out what kind of girls Josh likes. 006 gives it his best shot. 高圆圆！
I tell him I like 高圆圆。Josh isn’t quite taken with the pictures he finds online.
An An: “I’ve met her. She’s as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside.”
“You know since your relationship is kinda dead you could always hook up. You ever done that before?”
“No. Might give it a try”-Josh
I do have 006’s taste in women/food. But I have Josh’s heart. The two of them exist on opposite ends of the spectrum.
An An mixes us her signature lavender cocktail and we all love it. We stay there until 3 am.

The next day An An takes us up to another rooftop bar. Great bar. I lighten the mood up by doing some mock Angelina Jolie turnaround poses with pouted lips.
An An shows them an old photo of herself. 
“How ugly”-006
She’s briefly taken aback. I sigh and leave for a cigarette. I too have a dream MLK. That one day in my friendship circle I won’t have to deal with him.It begins pouring rain.
We head over to School bar and it’s my first time there. Not bad. 006 and I both face the wall staring at the posters. 
‘I cheated again and feel no remorse this time”
I grunt.
The grunt can be translated as, “thank you for sharing.” And also,
“He’s a piece of shit.”-Roy Kent on Jamie Tartt. Unlike Jaime, he just keeps getting worse.  At that moment I decided I’d be done with him as a friend.
We walk around gulou and houhai blasting the songs from our teenage years from Josh’s phone. Like Blink 182 and ‘All Rise.’
When no one is around 006 throws a bottle in the air.
Finally, we make it to Sanlitun where everything is closed on Nanjie. It’s another late night and we bike to 金鼎轩 at 3 am to eat…a late night snack is what I suppose I’d call it. 006 spots a couple of people he knows that are blasting DMX’s rough Ryders anthem. The food is good and it’s my first time.
006 insists on delaying the night further by taking a group photo.

So it’s just An An, Josh and I and we go to a 7/11 and drink more.An An tells us the story of how she caught her ex cheating on her by checking the odometer. He said he was going shopping but the km was a lot higher than a normal shopping trip.

An An: At this point I think if they try to hide it from you it means they care.

Well, there are exceptions to that rule like 006. So we parted ways as friends. She’s a great girl. 

By then 006 was selling insurance. He called me a couple of times to sell me and I didn’t return his calls. Then he attempted to guilt trip me with a quote about friends. A few months later he sent me a text apologizing for being such a bad friend and how he hoped I would forgive him. I did forgive him. We’re just no longer friends. Not enemies either.He’s probably deleted me by now.

A few months later, I take Q and Topher to PecoPeco again.
Q: This place would be good for a romantic date. Nice looking and the food is good.
Yoko texts Q furiously.
“你在重复一遍。她女朋友没工作还在家里呆着整天骂他。她给他做了什么？”An A (come again, his girlfriend does nothing all day except berate him. What does she do for him?)
“早上给他做三明治。” (She makes him sandwiches for breakfast)

Q really likes An An’s lavender cocktail. Since, no one has told him yet and he’s slightly tipsy, I say
“You know. You can do a lot better.”
“Thanks man.”

It’s similar to a trip to Mongolia I had when I had to tell the son of my dad’s friend that besides the new sister he found out on the trip he had another one. The Mongolians around us who only just met him didn’t have the guts so they nudged me and said, “you tell him.”
“You have an older sister too.’ (From another mother)
“WHAT!”

So Q leaves. I find some girls to my liking. Ask An An.
“She has a kid and found a new guy. Dumped the kid with her mother and isn’t home much.”
“Oh.” It’s like putting on the glasses in ‘They Live.’
“我跟你说就你喜欢的脸型的女人都不是什么好女人” (I’m telling you that the girls you like with that facial structure aren’t good girls”)

That’s the new mission. Proving her wrong :)

Where are they now:
Johnny English: In Shenzhen still doing gaming. Fired when he asked for a raise upon a raise. He got the first raise and …raised again.
Yi Lee: In Shenzhen still doing gaming.
True Love: HR found him a job in Shenzhen doing…gaming.
Q: Moved to Shanghai to do gaming and moved Yoko and himself back to Britain. Unfortunately he took Yoko with him.
006: Lost the insurance job and is still in Shanghai with his …wife.

Migos: Still listening to my music. Welcomed his first born daughter in his 40’s. Was fired during the large scale company clearout but still doing gaming related stuff.
Topher: was fired during the large scale company clearout. 
Josh Lee: Still working at Perfect World. Officially single. 
An An: Has given up on finding Mr. Right. PecoPeco is going to change locations.
