Colliding Bubbles (surface tension and release) is a composition for string quartet and harmonica quartet, meaning that Quatuor Bozzini is playing string instruments while playing harmonicas.

"The title refers to different kinds of bubbly matter which are set to collide within the composition, leading to different ruptures and possible release of surface tension.
The collision of bubbles unfolds partly in relation to sound, where small fluctuations appear in the encounters between harmonicas and string instruments and partly in relation to a more performative or conceptual bubble where instruments representing different systems, or bubbles, will collide; the very celebrated instruments within the classical string quartet and the perhaps more prosaic harmonica."  - Niels Lyhne Løkkegaard

Mumbled echoes from the mist, through the tunnels of revival. The graininess interplay with a subdued mellifluence. A haze of longing sighs and reverberations - threshold between the lane, where distant voices yield to light.   

Night Foundation, the electronic solo project of visual/sound artist Richard Vergez and the founder of the label - Noir Age, explores existential soundscapes, utilizing analogue hardware including vintage synthesizers, found percussion, tape effects, and manipulated wind instruments. 'Change Your Mind' holds the resilience and heralds the breath of new horizon.

Totally beautiful and rare piano performance from Loren Connors, joined on guitar by long time collaborator Alan Licht. 
Celebrating thirty years of collaboration, Loren Connors and Alan Licht performed for two nights at OTO on May 5 and 6th, 2023. On the second night, with the stage lit in blue, Connors took up a seat on the piano stool whilst Licht picked up the guitar. What followed was the duo’s first ever set with Connors on piano - one of only a few times Connors has played piano live at all - here captured and issued as The Blue Hour. Its spacious warmth came as a total surprise live, but makes complete sense for a duo whose dedicated expressionism takes inspiration from a vast spectrum of emotion.

Both opening with single notes to start, it doesn't take long before a surface rises and begins to shimmer. A run up the keys, the drop of a feedback layer on a sustained and bent note. The two begin to exchange notes in tandem and brief touches of melody and chord hover. After a while, Connors picks up the guitar, stands it in his lap and sweeps a wash of colour across Licht’s guitar. Sharp, glassy edges begin to form, open strings and barred frets darkening the space. When his two pedals begin to merge, Licht finds a dramatic organ-like feedback and it’s hard not to imagine Rothko’s Chapel, its varying shades of blue black ascending and descending in the room.

When Connors goes back to the piano for the second side, the pair quickly lock into a refrain and light pours in. It’s a kind of sound that Licht says reminds him of what he and Connors would do when the duo first started playing together 30 years ago. It’s certainly more melodic than some of their more recent shows, and the atonal shards of At The Top of the Stairs seem to totally dissolve. What is always remarkable about Licht is that his enormous frame of reference doesn't seem to weigh him down, and instead here he is able to delicately place fractures of a Jackson C Frank song (“Just Like Anything”,) amongst the vast sea of Connors’ blues.

Perhaps it's the pleasure of playing two nights in a row together, or the nature of Connor’s piano playing combined with Licht’s careful listening, but the improvisation on The Blue Hour feels remarkably calm and unafraid. There’s nothing to prove and no agenda except the joy of sounding colour together. Totally beautiful.

Somewhere between the ears and the eyes is a bridge of imaginary light. Somewhere in a dark room a bright cone of photons connects a slide projector to a wall. Dust motes drift like plankton in the glow. One thought overtakes another as the carousel clicks forward, shuffles; a new piece of celluloid drops into the projection slot, a new image illuminates the wall — visions of a recent past, filtered through what Mark Templeton calls the 'pink hue of mystery...' The ten compositions on Templeton's INNER LIGHT are reel-to-reel tape loop arrangements based on some 70s- and 80s-era meditation cassettes (found in a church library, with an archive of photographic slides which reappear in Templeton's supplementary photobook, A GUIDE TO INNER LIGHT).

Originally made to foster relaxation and well-being in a liturgical setting, the recordings now have a lysergic skew, as if heard underwater during the immersion of a baptism — a sonic lustration... An electric fan blows air onto an incandescent bulb hidden inside the machine. We hum along as the filament burns and we puzzle together a fantasy. We hear the inner light before we see it. The ears tell the eyes where to look, and the eyes look inward.”

Mark Templeton is a Canadian media artist and the founder of Graphical, an audiovisual label dedicated to publishing his own musical and image based experiments. Mark’s audio compositions are constructed from reel-to-reel tape loops and sampled cassettes that are contrasted with contemporary sound techniques. In his published photobooks, he incorporates his own 35mm pictures and found images, focusing on intangible fantasies and realities. During his audiovisual performances, he utilizes digital instruments while projecting his own photographs, VHS footage, Super 8 film, and other sampled video.

Since 2007, he has released material on various international record labels and photobook publishers, both as a solo artist and in collaboration with other artists.

Templeton has performed live and exhibited his work at art galleries, festivals and alternative spaces throughout North America, Europe, United Kingdom and China.

Dear Ɠհօʂէ Ꭰąղçҽ label is back in the haunting game with its fourth imprint, this time from ᑕᗩᖇᗰEᑎTᖇᗩᑎ duo (aka Brahim Lumière & Guillaume Lamorte). 

Previously part of Le Marais eponymous LP on Besoins Premiers (along with green beast Jacques Satre), the long-time friends unveil today their four-tracker, depicting the exuberant and colorful myths rooted in their native Provence. In the heavy fuzz and distortion hide the intoxicating rounds of a carnival, the heady scent of a burning wicker man, the deafening drone of a crowd becoming one in front of the dancing flames.

Irish artist Eamon Ivri (aka Lighght) and evo-natura's label founder Ioannis Nafpliotis (aka xato) present their two-tracker ambient / drone collaboration EP, 'Flown like dust / Glacial Endeavor'.

While the tracks have their own distinct sound, they both share the same main technique behind their creation: tape looping. Although it is a digitally made tape loop system, they both follow the ethos behind the analogue originator. With field recordings and improvised compositions, their existence serves to accompany you in different moods.

@ma3azef has teamed up with mastering engineer Heba Kadry to curate a compilation of new and unreleased materials provided by regional and international musicians to raise funds for the continuous relief work being done on the ground in Beirut to help those who have been failed by the state. 

The 17-track compilation includes contributions by @tho-om, @fatima-al-qadiri, @nicolas-jaar, @zulimusic, @freddymn, @sssarahhharasss, @deenaabdelwahed, @ayametwalli, @thisisismael and more. 

All proceeds from sales of the compilation go to local initiatives providing assistance to those affected, divided between Fundraising Campaign for the Arts and Culture Community in Beirut organised by AFAC; Beirut Musicians' Fund organised by Tunefork Studios, and Beit el Baraka.

ISHAM KOUIDRI “ALL I SEE IS BLUE” (ENXPL03)

Paris based artist Isham Kouidri presents his debut release “All I See Is Blue” for the Enmossed and Psychic Liberation collaboration series. On “All I See Is Blue”, the artist extrapolates a sonic environment from a single piano loop. As the recording progresses through it’s respective acts, A side “Through The Window” and B side “Now He’s Gone”, tension and the sublime interplay compositionally. Isham Kouidri uses his time on “All I See Is Blue” to allow for his process to subvert the reverie he has created, but the light is always right around the bend.
