A surefire provider of deep, complex weapons for the dance floor and beyond, French-born, Berlin-based artist Kangding Ray has been minting some of the most strikingly unique techno records in recent memory. His body of work for some of the most reputed record labels out there, including Raster Noton, Stroboscopic Artefacts and his own outlet, ara, cuts an introspective path, halfway modular-leaning escapology and beat-driven abstraction. From his background in architecture, his musical approach retains that fondness for structure and the creation, or re-creation of space, both as an actual object and a mental projection. Over two decades of unfaltering devotion to production and DJing, dishing out some of the finest slices of opulently textured techno along the way, Tokyo-based maestro DJ Sodeyama has been honing a sound signature both intricately hypnotic and boundary-pushing. Blending delicate melodic strains of electronics ranging from deep, ambient music to verbed-out, atmospheric techno, often laced with hints of jazz and soulful discoid expressions, his productions and mixes combine the satiny elegance of loungey daydream with that of more rugged, deep-diving dubs a la Basic Channel. From light to shade, and vice-versa, DJ Sodeyama builds pieces of music where the ever-changing lighting and shifting angles swath you in an oddly comforting headspace. A most fascinating trip for the body and soul.

Taking over the RYC waves this week, Tokyo’s finest Mari Sakurai punches in with a helluva 2-hour treat by way of introduction. Working her way in the gap betwixt post-industrial opacity and heavy-duty brutalism, Mari has been slowly but surely making a name for herself with uncompromising sets spanning everything from cool-handed big room pound to mazy abstraction and other bursts of mind-altering sonics from way deep. Known for cutting a path of destruction with every of her mixes, her RYC offering doesn’t depart from such intentions, and we’re invited to a smorgasbord of claustrophobic hi-tech onslaughts and a string of purely exhilarating, apex-seeking momentums. Hi-voltage shockwave due for impact imminently.

There’s beauty in chaos and method to madness, that much is true to the work of this faceless duo from Sweden. SHXCXCHCXSH’s strain of anarchic noise has sparked conversations and head-spinning records ever since the two producers first swapped notes in 2009. For about a decade, Hannes Stenström and Emmanuel Pascal Moreno stayed out of the public eye as a matter of principle, stripping music to its very base, without the weight of prejudice and social context holding it back: ’we prefer to listen to music in the dark, preferably without knowing who made it, when or how’. From the chaos and their loyalty to instinct came the need to find new structures, and so their faceless records united around a theme or musical element. It was a gamble, but their sledgehammer destruction of techno conventions gave some of the most intriguing sounds of the 2010s. Sampling everything from podcasts to YouTube to field recordings, they’re always on the hunt for ‘in-between’, ‘unintentional’ details, a way to composite the strangest and most innovative techno out there. Their staggering releases on Avian pioneered new sounds (and track names), and successfully manufactured the type of music you could hear both at home and in clubs; and 2024 saw them resurrect their Rösten imprint with the release of DO, an infernal four-tracker made for the dancefloor. Bassiani Podcast 257 explores that format further, bringing their stabbing and psychedelic havoc to a crowd facing setting. Immersive and heavy-duty, this one’s an hour-long clip of their snake-pit percussions, mind-bending techno from the enigmatic Norrköping duo.

Psyk is a key player in Spanish techno, an acclaimed talent with firm emphasis on deep, repetitive loops. He has become synonymous with high-quality, trippy and smart as a tack rhythms. For the last two decades since he started out on Madrid’s clandestine rave beat, he’s developed and advanced a sound to near perfection: raw and technically agile, pelagic echoes from the abyss that have shifted with their changing times. 2011 saw him launch the widely renowned Non Series, a platform releasing the work of similar vein artists like DJ Nobu, Architectural, Neel, Nastia Reigel, Tauceti, Blawan, Luigi Tozzi, Function and Rrose, generating buzz and ardent following. His own releases on labels like Mote Evolver, Semantica and Tresor, intermittent forays on his own label under the alias Maan, as well as his co-project Second Skin (est. 2022) alongside fellow Madrileño Oscar Mulero have been slowly gaining traction in a contemporary music landscape replete with talent. Though the rate of productions is decelerating his touring schedule marches forward at full tilt, adding recent Bassiani dates to those at a list of must-play venues like Fabric, Berghain, Fuse, Tresor and Amsterdam’s shuttered DeSchool. His expert drones and algorithmic beat patterns are in a process of continuing evolution and whatever comes next is sure to be even better than his already outstanding catalogue of work. Bassiani Podcast 258 is an 80-minute expedition into a murky world of Psyk’s design, sweeping and purist techno from this heavyweight selector.

Ghent-based DJ and Fuse resident Marie-Julie is our guest this week with the killer delivery. Merging future-facing, hi-tech abstraction with a sixth sense for those inescapable rhythms and a wonky, off-kilter sonic engineering, Marie-Julie entices us down the path of complete mind-alteration. Constantly shifting gears, her vinyl blends run the gamut from dystopian murk to ankle-snapping old skool breaks, through lysergic psychedelia and chromatic dubs a la Basic Channel, without ever losing in cohesion or attention to detail. Hailing from Santiago de Chile, eclectic talent Marcelo Antonio is a formidable voice for deep, mind-bending techno. Since 2018 the DJ/Producer has been putting out a growing number of releases on labels like Float, Keyhole, Methodical, Antiterra, EVOD Music, and delivered killer sets across his native Chile and Europe, honing a class of sound that’s full-bodied, deep and geared for marathon raves. His self-published work via Bandcamp-only outlet Out of Sight too, offers a further glimpse into his intimate studio workings: high-concept and movement driven tracks that foment rhythmic contemplation. His frequent collaborators include widely recognised industry staples like Kwartz, DVS1, Kr!z, Ruben Ganev, TWR72, Border One, Biri and Samuli Kempi, a sounding board comprised of peers that share in his passion for primal loops. It’s an elegant techno that layers up textures and builds up tension second by second, and steers its bow towards a distant and euphoric horizon. This master of mood is here with a number that’ll push your body and mind to the limit, liminal techno that hypnotises and fringes the frontier of techno. Bassiani Podcast 276 is one you don’t want to miss.
