IT.podcast.s11e03: Patrick Russell at No Way Back Streaming From Beyond 2021

A tribute to Tesla's early radio experiments, and his corresponding patent. To help convey this concept, additional (old) electronics were integrated into the mixer's signal path; the combination of poor wiring introduced desirable, though at times inaudible, FM radio frequency noise into the finished product. 

The mix was conceived and recorded in early 2006, and was exclusively broadcast later that year on Mike Huckaby's radio show in Detroit/Windsor. 

Recorded on two turntables, in one take.

MNMT Recordings : Patrick Russell x Mostra

This mix was recorded in June 2000, 3 days after the first DEMF. I had just moved into a different place in Detroit, and the last items left in my old downtown apartment were 2 Technics, a tape deck, hi-fi amp + speakers, and a Numark DM-1550 rotary mixer from the 80s. In those days I'd been going out to see Theo Parrish + KDJ play small loft parties around town, and was listening to a ton of old WBMX/WGCI radio mixes and Ron Hardy Music Box recordings......this session, each side recorded directly to cassette in one take, is a reflection of those circumstances and influences.

Patrick Russell is a true veteran of the US underground, perhaps one of the last unsung heroes of a now lost era in the Midwest. A genuine sonic storyteller, he magically transforms the diaspora of acid, pure jack energy, and hints of IDM into a deep, fluent sonic dialog that never fails to devastate both minds and dance floor.

A Detroit-bred DJ, artist, and producer active since the early 90's, Patrick has now made New York City his home. Perhaps best known as a key figure in the legendary No Way Back parties, his ability to weave intensely unique, long-format narratives has earned him critical acclaim and repeat performances at Japan’s Labyrinth festival, Berghain, Unsound, and DEMF/Movement. Patrick has also been steadily building a strong catalog of high-profile productions to compliment his increasingly varied, hypnotic, and in-demand DJ sets; his recent 3-track remix EP on The Bunker New York also marks his induction as an official resident DJ at the long-running Brooklyn party.

His consummate taste and disciplined execution have created a respect that cannot be purchased. Patrick Russell is not just a name to watch, he is someone to be experienced.

Released in October 2017, this mix was previously only available on a limited cassette from Brevity Tapes and featured a separate mix from Karl Meier on the flip side. The approach was to do something slightly different than the average podcast or live mix, instead reaching a bit deeper into our collections and present a dynamic narrative with the framework of a 45 minute cassette tape. This one was super fun to put together and features a range of IDM and electro tracks from Dynamo, Andrea Parker, Aphex Twin, Peder Mannerfelt, DMX Krew, Sleeparchive, and more.

Remix for Few And Far Between, a Brooklyn/Detroit indie rock band who commissioned this project in 2010. This version differs greatly from not only the original but also the released remix, which sadly suffered from poor mastering to the point where it is unlistenable. This snippet reflects the track's new mastering, and is currently seeking a home on a new label.

Podcast from November 2009, created for the Blank Artists label in Detroit; this mix was used to promote their event from the same month, which featured myself along with a special live set from Substance & Vainqueur. The podcast was only up for a limited time and currently isn't available anywhere else.
The set was done on 3 turntables and utilized only vinyl.
