And so we present a second record from our NY via San Francisco family, a blossoming talent, Austin Cesear. Primed and fresh from a 12” on Anthony Naples’ Proibito label and an Opal Tapes cassette, he surfaces again over a year on from his widely revered Cruise Forever LP – welcome to West Side. 

Heavily inspired by the dockside location of Oakland Port, CA. This is Austin Cesear beside black water in the darkest hours, white sodium light bouncing across the surf. Searching across the bay, industry stands proud in the early morning haze. Cargo, containers, machines. Cranes pierce the sky, gulls scream, motors grind - the rush and roar of a new working day in his ears. 

Back in the studio these sounds, these sights manifest. Track One – La Paloma, the liquid blue dawn, loops into the horizon. Whilst track two – Ain’t It So (Necessary) becomes a twitchy techno shuffle that soon breaks down into the disused mechanic sludge of Cloven Hoov. Easy Bend is then a lesson in the sublime. A machine rhythm in mourning, an aching drone, the soundtrack to ships rolling out of the Bay, toward new worlds. Then the growl of Samareda... a storm of insects hammering against a kick-thump that grows and grows before a shower of voices sweeten the mood to take us home in a blaze of light. Stunning tackle. Bee Free (Warlick Mix) is the endgame – a rugged swagger of moody bump n’ beat. The funkiest thing on here. 

And so we leave Oakland, we leave Austin Cesear... until next time. This young producer is steadily becoming a mature soul, an exceptional sound, a moment of calm in an ever breathless, over crowded market.

...the Symbiosis piece by Malcolm Pointon was very interesting and is the kind of use synthesizers should be put to. Synthesizers should explore new sounds rather than imitate conventional ones... Practical Electronics Magazine c.1975

Malcolm Pointon was born in 1940, Stoke on Trent. He spent his life and career in tape, synthesizer and keys; academia, sound, music and machine.  Here, for the first time, Public Information and Ian Helliwell present the rarely heard works of Malcolm Pointon. With permission given by Malcolm’s widow Barbara, Helliwell has compiled an LP of material taken from master tapes of home-recorded, never released electronic material.

Following a period at the BBC, Malcolm joined Homerton College, Cambridge, in 1969 and it was here where he would discover his electronic-muse. Inspired by Stockhausen and the surge of avant-garde tape music, Malcolm began to build compositions at home using a 4-waveband radio and multi-speed tape recorder. His first piece using these techniques is the skittering “Radiophonie” which opens this LP.

After mastering tape-music, Malcolm began reading, and eventually contributing to, Practical Electronics magazine (edited by our own F.C. Judd no-less). He and engineer cohort Doug Shaw entered an “electronic music construction challenge” in 1973 – and so a battery powered, stylus activated self-build synthesizer was presented to the dedicated circuit heads of Practical Electronics. The Minisonic was born.

Many of the pieces on here were produced using the Minisonic, including the staggeringly heavy centerpiece of this album “Symbiosis” - replete with Malcolm’s own introduction. Elsewhere, Pointon takes us down pummeling arpeggiated rhythms (“Sonata Elletronica), mind-melting-inside-beehive tape pieces (“Poreira”, “Boogie”), freaked-out concrète trips (“Trojan Woman” “Then Wakes the Ice”) and shimmering noise works like the beautiful, “Study 2”.

Malcolm Pointon would be cruelly diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at the age of 51. He became unable to operate his studio and so his rare gift to electronic music was gone, until now. Public Information and curator Ian Helliwell are incredibly proud to share Malcolm’s music with you. We will be sending all profits of this release to the Alzheimer’s Society, helping to support people with dementia and their carers on their long journey, right here and now.

In January 2012 we released a 35-track compendium of F.C. Judd’s music and sound, it was called Electronics Without Tears. Fast forward to Spring 2013 and we are back with Fred for a very special LP to reignite his legacy. 

For our tenth release we asked some of our favourite artists working today to submit a reinterpretation of the greatly undervalued early electronics pioneer, Frederick Charles Judd. We gave them Fred’s entire archive of sounds, tone experiments, field recordings and lectures and left it up them to produce an audio artefact befitting of Judd himself. 

The players invited: Chris Carter, Perc, Pye Corner Audio, Holly Herndon, Mordant Music, Peter Rehberg, Bandshell, Ekoplekz, The Boats, Leyland Kirby, Karen Gwyer and Ian Helliwell. 

Interpretations On F.C. Judd opens with Fred himself, welcoming us into his world before Ian Helliwell takes us into a fractured loop of radio static and gargled musique concrete. 

From here we lurch through pure tape trips (Leyland Kirby, Chris Carter) dubwise refractions (Karen Gwyer, The Boats, PCA), haunted never-zones (Ekoplekz, Mordant Music, Perc), sublime vocal deconstructions (Holly Herndon) and frightening slashes of electronic deviance (Peter Rehberg, Bandshell). 

Throughout Inspirations, Fred is never far away, reminding us how important visionaries like him stalk even the most future-bound of electronic music.
