Application of the Texas Enterprise Risk Management Guidelines with Lisette Osborne

Networking at PRIMA’s conference Lisette was introduced to Texas’s ‘SORM’ website https://www.sorm.state.tx.us/ where she was able to find the state’s guidelines on risk management.  

The website has sections and guidelines broken down into a variety of content which may be helpful if you are new to the risk management world and/or helpful if you are seasoned validating how your program functions or could run. 

Key components of designing a program
- What is the benefit of the agency?
- What is the value added?
- Why does this risk management exist? 
- How will it function? 
- Importance of evaluating the program, what does the success look like and how often 
- Who do you need to convince or sell the program to? 
- How to structure the way your risk management program will apply in your own agency and entity.

First Responders Protect Us - Let's Help Them Heal

This week we have Gary Stanley is the Senior VP and  Medical Officer at Harvard MedTech. Gary gives his expertise and experience on ways to identify injuries or trauma first responders may be dealing with. 

The larger events are easy to identify however the smaller or day to day small traumas that add up overtime.

A lot of the initial needs of the public during Covid 19 were on the first responders when hospitals and family members were unable to meet the needs of people. 

Identification may be tricky when treating first responders as a lot of people don’t feel comfortable self reporting. 

Supervisors, organizational hierarchy that has the detail or attention to ask their responders ‘How are you feeling today or how is the stress of this job weighing on you.’ 

Having a holistic perspective implemented or a wellness element added into the organization.

There are also new solutions that bring help to the individual’s home via virtual check ins and consistency on a regular basis to ensure the first responder has access and can comfortable share with a counselor or professional on how they are doing.

Angelique indicates that changes in how organizations approach and deal with these risks have not been as radical as one would hope, despite the fact that incidents of this nature are constantly being reported by the media. Many organizations still rely solely on criminal background checks, which is problematic because only 40% of offenders actually have a criminal background. This may be attributed to the fact that very few offenders get caught.
