Here's a follow-up: interesting results. This is another continuous modular synth performance, playing into the Lavry Black, but this time rather than showing behavior on a set input volume, I've set it up to give equal peaks. The input was padded as necessary to give the same non-clipped peaks on capture, each section was individually normalized to -0.1dbFS and then dithered to 24 bit with Airwindows Dark. So this is the NATIVE RMS/peak balance for each mode, on this audio.

There's an interesting outcome: given spiky peak-happy synths in a bassy, dub-techno mix, the Transformer setting is a LOT fatter and bassier and results in a target loudness that's pretty much exactly what iTunes, YouTube etc. are looking for (slightly under what Spotify wants to see). So, despite Tube having tonal advantages, capturing cleanly into the Transformer mode is like running an extra stage of peak limiting to get into typical streaming service loudness levels. Of course if you slam it, it will get silly loud, but it turns out that the Transformer mode serves a useful purpose even if you're not clipping. The result actually feels a lot like the (elevated) loudness in the room while performing.
