The album’s sonic foundation, made up of funk-solid girders and each track, their own bold skyscraper, could be marveled for their unique architecture and groove-tight compositions. But more than the sum of its parts, the skyline comes together in an elegant, polished posterior, with the sludge of goopy cosmic horror tropes sloshed all over it. The hip hop bangers, “Spooky Food” and “Multi-Dimensional Space Kraken”, are explosive enough for a controlled demolition and the symphonic lushness of “Poofy Stars” hones the songcraft that endeared them to their fervent fanbase over the past 8 years. While the band’s lobbying efforts have erected new developments in their sound, the funk-n-gunk of past singles is on full display here on the lead jams, “Gentrification of Planet Earth” and “Abortable Housing”.
