Wisdom from the Abbey–Mother Hilda–To See or Not to See (One of the great human truths is that we cannot unsee what we have seen. That is one of the tragedies of trauma, no matter what people do, they cannot unsee the horror they have witnessed. Mother Hilda says that in life, it is not what we see that has its lasting effects it is how we see it. Today’s Gospel has a lot to say about seeing and unseeing. Jesus saw the blind man. The pharisees wanted him to unsee his perception as well as his perception of Jesus and his parents to unsee their son. However, the man himself was certain what he had seen. What about each of us, how do we see Jesus? In the Gospel, Jesus seeks the man out to ensuring that he truly saw Jesus. Can you remember a time when life was against you and someone rang you up, or called in, or sent you an email or text, and you found that you were not alone. That was Jesus seeing you too.)

Triumph Lent Series–Sr Anastasia Reeves—Doing what the angel of the Lord asks ( Sr Anastasi’s reflection is for Monday of the 4th week of Lent, St Joseph’s feast day and its Gospel, Matthew 1: 16,18-21,24. Joseph, a humble, hard-working carpenter, lived in simplicity but God dramatically transforms his life. He is invited to raise a divine child, with many unforeseeable consequences. In obedience, and without fuss, he did what the angel of the Lord asks and thus begins the greatest adventure of human history: the advent of Jesus. While our lives’ may be even more hidden than St Joseph’s, God also asks us to live with great courage and love in a humble way to do what the Lord asks, trusting that we are also cooperating with Jesus’ saving plan.)

Triumph Lent Series–Ken Bryant—Standing Firm (In his reflection for Thursday of the 4th week of Lent, Ken Bryant says that throughout his time of ministry, Jesus was frequently confronted by the scribes and pharisees, but Jesus  always stood firm in his missionary purpose: that all would know the never ending, compassionate and merciful love of the Father. This too is our calling, to be the embodiment of God’s love in all we do. During Lent we are called to stand firm just like Jesus. Even though we are now in the middle of Lent, there’s still time to embrace the traditional practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving to deepen our faith life, reach out in compassion to those in need, and enliven our spirit to become more fully aware of God’s presence in our lives.)

God in the Everyday—Fr Mike Delaney—Zacchaeus (Fr Mike says that being called to mission is all about at how we respond to God’s invitation to be witnesses in the world by asking how we are responding to the events of our every day. This God spot is the result of opening a file with just the word “Zacchaeus” in it, listening to a homily about clutter in one’s life, trying to put a God Spot together. Zacchaeus is the story of a man who wondered who Jesus was and looked for a way to see him by climbing a tree. As the story unfolds, we hear Zacchaeus pledging to make restitution to anyone he had cheated. He was uncluttering his life in a very different way, but he was now open to the Lord in a real way. This God spot is not what I would have thought when I originally created a file called Zacchaeus, but then, isn’t that the way that God frequently works in our lives.)

Wisdom from the Abbey–Mother Hilda–You are the Treasure (Mother Hilda says that the thing about real love is that it doesn’t matter what the other person has or hasn’t done, love can’t be swept away, can’t disappear or be dissolved or killed off. No sacrifice is too great when it comes to love; there is nothing that the person won’t do to ensure the good and happiness of the one who is loved, even if the other person sells you out. Mother Hilda says that real love is like finding a treasure that neither time or death can steal. She says that Jesus says to us that we are the treasure that he found and that he endures death on the cross to hold us as his own treasure.)
