Zero Fox

After countless hours spent chopping up vinyl, laying down basslines, tweaking synthesizers and banging on drum pads I'm proud to present "I'm Gone". This album aims to bring back the soulful sounds of the past while maintaining a bass-heavy modern feel. I'm especially happy with two tracks on the album which feature my friend Willdabeast (of Snug Harbour and Michal Menert Big Band). Will laid down some soulful horns, flute and a few other instruments to take my sample-based beats to the next level. In 1960-80s, if you turned on the TV after dinner in a Chinese-speaking country, you would likely see two ancient martial heroes engaging in enticing battles while adorned in exquisite gowns and elegant long hair. Their kung fu entertainingly defied the laws of physics as they soared through the air, against a scenic backdrop, and most important to some captivating oriental tunes tailor-made for the show. Such music holds a special place in the hearts of local and diaspora Sinophone communities. It possesses a unique musical identity, blending uplifting traditional Chinese instruments with energetic and poetic vocals. In an effort to pay homage to this timeless art form and explore the possibilities of Canto-footwork, "Emergencies among Lakes and Rivers" presents a fresh take on the popular martial heroes songs, infusing them with contemporary and cutting-edge electronic music.

The EP opens with the track "Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber," where a fusion of hip-hop and footwork beats sets a dynamic and ever-changing rhythm. The energy of the original "Sweep over Mountain and Waters" is further amplified through electronic arrangements, culminating in an edgy and exhilarating finale. "Lonely Being Invincible" embraces an old-school juke arrangement, featuring addictive vocal samples with a touch of disco influence. "Best in the World" takes the exploration of juke music to another level, with constant build-ups and a surprising shift to a tranquil ending. It sets the stage for the original track "Laughter in the Vast Sea," which beautifully reimagines the morning vibes of the original into a nocturnal soundscape. The delicate arrangement and gradually complex rhythm captivate the listener, leading to a climactic and explosive conclusion that wraps up the EP in grand style.

A little back story on this one, for those of you that may be interested. I'd wanted to do an edit of this wonderful track for ages but couldn't figure out how to approach it when along came Mark E with "Scared", an edit which solved the issue of how to deal with the two separate parts of the track beautifully - extend the intro, tease it out and simply drop into the main part of the original, leaving it as is. Brilliant! The only snag for me was that "Scared" wasn't in the style that I was looking for personally. So, I proceeded to copy Mark E's blueprint using a different groove. I filtered the intro and beat, jammed along on keys over the top, working it to the max, before dropping back into the original at the drop. I've had a lot of fun playing this one out over the years, it works equally well in house clubs and soul all-nighters alike. I've left the edit as is,  the way I first recorded it, nice and loose (nothing to do with locating 9+ year old files  on hard drives ;)). I hope you all enjoy it and play it out often and loud!

My mom used to play Elton John’s music all the time. I grew up on it. His songs played a large part of my musical childhood. In fact, I’m told that the first song I ever sang was, “B-B-B-Bennie and the Jets.” Having not listened to much of Elton’s music in recent years, I found myself truly inspired having gone to see the movie, Rocketman. The music brought back intense feelings from both my childhood and where I find myself in the present moment. I immediately went into the studio and started work on this remix.

As a musician, I’ve always related deeply to the original song which was inspired by the 1951 science fiction short, The Rocket Man, by Ray Bradbury. The story depicts the complex relationship between technology and psychology, and in particular, an astronaut's love of the stars. A man ventures into space for three months at a time and returns to earth for only a few short days to see his wife and son, deeply torn between his love of space and his family. The song imagines what his long adventures, while filled with loneliness, would be like. I've always viewed this as a metaphor for the life of an artist. 

This remix makes a great precursor to the release of my next full-length album, Setting Fire To The Stars. (Coming this fall). It's a sci-fi themed record that vibes on the darker side of our feelings. Thoughts of anxiety, depression, loneliness, and social isolation are recurring ideas in both the lyrics and music found on this album. Subjects that many of us are all too familiar with. 

So here's my remix of Rocket Man for you. I hope you catch a new vibe off my interpretation of the original classic.
