Pure Space presents the debut EP from Naarm-via-Boorloo artist CHEAHDX (Darren Cheah), co-founder of Step Count & Serendipity, and a familiar force across Australia’s underground. Known for his genre-fluid DJ sets, CHEAHDX distills a decade of dancefloor energy into four cuts built for the system.

Opening track ‘Earthbound’ sets the tone with heady momentum, bass-fuelled pressure driving straight into hybrid genre territory, a hefty bass workout to kick things off.

‘Li-Ion’ keeps the pace high, a minimal trance cut sharpened with break-driven percussion and razor-edged sampling. The track levitates, then lets loose, landing squarely on the floor with peak-time energy.

Pulling back the tempo, ‘Monte De Pedra’ drops into subterranean mode, a low-slung bass workout, equal parts wobble and restraint. It’s dance music for lean-back hours, stretching tension through its sub-heavy architecture.

Closing with the title track, ‘Visage’ blends dreamy pads and whirling horns with expertly sculpted subs, a hybrid closer that ties the EP together in a haze of depth and motion.

CHEAHDX’s debut EP on Pure Space marks a producer fully in command of his craft. With roots in bass, breaks, and leftfield electronics (and years clocked on the dancefloor), Visage lands with steeze, weight, and intent.

Pure Space Records welcomes a newly emerging Naarm producer, Dividens with his EP ‘Blueprints’. Across four tracks Dividens masterfully guides us through the fringes of modern drum n bass, eerie Dub and restrained Jungle styles.

Starting strong, ‘Audio Blueprint’ provides a fast and erratic baseline cushioned only by a deep, squelching synth. It’s a textural and delicately refined track, with each sound finding its perfect place with twisted effect.

Pure Space is thrilled to welcome label boss Andy Garvey for her first EP on the label. Across three tracks Andy Garvey masterfully glides through sharp trance and thrilling techno.

Up next ‘Let’s Go’ heads into the main-room. A dizzy-ing cut that is made for winding up dancefloors at peak time. The track has a refined yet reckless energy, with its sharp bassline and ever evolving delayed vocal samples.

Finally Who Am I closes out Garvey’s originals on the release. Inspired by the dance music of her teens, the track comes with tight synthesis, whirring sirens and a grooving bassline.

Andy Garvey - Who Am I

黑芝麻 (Hēi zhī ma) invites you to retreat inwards - on both the physical plane and within the depths of your psyche - as part of the Pure Space Home Listening series. 

Imagined during lockdown, Pure Space Home Listening // 黑芝麻和朋友们 (Hēi zhī ma and friends) probes home listening in the context of isolation.
As an artist, 黑芝麻 leans into the more emotive facets of sound, utilizing sonic and cerebral contrasts to subtly lull the listener into a journey unforeseen. This release sees them infuse this approach within their collaborations with artists Merph, Shoeb Ahmad, Moktar and Zhi. 

The artists explore the familiar feelings of solitude, urgency and release firmly etched into our collective consciousness, both synchronously and through their own distinct lens. 

“I Miss You” lulls you in with emotive pads that float above a sharp breakbeat and voice notes engulfed with longing. “Take Me Anywhere” provides a feeling of relief, as groove-laden techno bounces off the walls and into the abyss. “Associations” is an introspective, spacious and haunting track you want to float on and on. As you glide between these offerings, the intro and outro tracks hold space for tender ruminations.

The release serves as an archive of a more contemplative and confined period, through the distant murmur of voice notes, the metamorphosing drone of ambient soundscapes, poetic reveries that hang in the air, the rattling percussion of a breakbeat or techno high-hat and the gentle backdrop hums of nature.
This is an immersive audiovisual experience. Filmmaker Jane Inyang reimagines the EP in a short film through different listening contexts during a day in isolation for the protagonist. This short film will be accessible by a QR code in an accompanying poster and zine, which will also feature artist photos, recipes and poetry alongside the work of artist Jacquie Meng and photographer Chanel Nguyen. There will also be a limited run of earrings by Joanne Leong.

Face Dancer - Arcade

Pure Space returns with a certified dancefloor heater from local Eora-Sydney artist Command D.

First heard through the Inner Varnika festival soundsystem this year ‘Musik’ comes as an audacious dance cut, bolstered with aggressive drum programming, a punching bassline and playful sampling.

The vocals that carry the tune are reminiscent of many 90s dance tunes; simple yet purposeful to those rolling deep on a dancefloor.

For our final release of the year we are thrilled to share this conceptual EP ‘An-Xileel’ from two aliases’ of Naarm based artist Daniel Jakobsson; Eastern Distributor and Jörmungandr.

The world building for this release came through a necessity for escapism for Jakobsson. Across this release, he takes you on a vivid journey through Black Marsh, a territory that sprawls through tranquil yet wild swamplands into densely breathtaking rainforests. 

Within this captivating landscape resides the Argonians, reptilian humanoid creatures who call Black Marsh home. The EP delves into the world of the An-Xileel, a mysterious anti-imperialist political faction among the Argonians. With sharp, obsidian eyes gleaming with ancient intelligence, they are dedicated to purging the former colonial influence and restoring the homeland to its pre-foreign rule state.

Opening the release, 'Sap Speaker' by Eastern Distributor sets the tone with a frenzied and energetic vibe, establishing the EP's atmosphere. Throughout the track, the crisp percussion maintains a sharp presence amidst the focused and intentionally immersive synthesis. The inspiration for this track stemmed from the swamp environments.

Moving on to Dam Dweller, the composition features cold, dark percussion alongside psychedelic sweeps that plunge the listener into a profound low-end groove. This groove undergoes a gradual evolution into a 4/4 eruption, accompanied by the delicate touch of gentle pads and strings. The inspiration behind this track draws from the water and cave systems of Black Marsh.

Dam Dweller gracefully concludes, paving the way for Sand Shaper, a mellow yet robust track. With a focus on organic instruments, a gliding bass, and bowed strings, Sand Shaper captivates with hypnotising atmosphere and polyrhythmic percussion. The inspiration for this piece lies in the territory's sandy shores.

Root Mender brings the tempo back up, radiating positivity, vitality, and life. Thick sub-bass tones resonate through the body, and purposeful drum programming slice through the ever engulfing ethereal pads. An amphibious croak pulses beneath heavy kicks, accompanied by soothing vocals. Strings and acid basslines elevate the track, marking it as the EP's highlight. The inspiration for Root Mender is drawn from the tree homes of the Argonians.

Concluding the EP, Tree Minder adopts an introspective tone. Minimalist percussion and sharp automation contrast with angelic pads and echoing sounds. Flutes, bells, and bows collectively paint the spirit of an alien world, mirroring the hope brought by the An Xileel to the Argonian people.

Eastern Distributor - Dam Dweller

Plunge into unexplored sonics with Paris-based Australian artist al dente as he unveils his debut EP on Pure Space titled ‘multiform’.

Across the release al dente assembles a hypnotic merger of eerie atmospheres and playful rhythms, inviting listeners to immerse themselves in a world that is both deeply mysterious and unexpectedly fun.

Kicking off the EP is "the temptation," a subtly bass fueled cut that casts murky textures across mesmitic delayed melodies with a pitched vocal sample holding the journey steady. It's instantly captivating and sets the tone of the release for a journey into deeply satisfying electronix.

Transitioning seamlessly into "multiform," al dente unleashes a torrent of slippery beats and twisted synths. Playful in spirit, the track balances its propelling bassline with a crispy four to the floor beat - perfect for warming the floor or a freaky late night adventure.

Flipping the switch, al dente ups the pace on “overnight”. With sharp, skippy rhythms and glitchy nuances the track melts together proto-electro with a modern production sheen. The vocal samples a Croatian soccer commentator, a nod to his family's Croatian heritage and continuation of the playful nrg throughout the EP.

Completing the release comes Melbourne-based producer White Fluff’s remix of “overnight”. Injecting the track with his signature blend of psychedelic sound, the remix feels stripped back yet purposeful, adding a new sonic pallet to the release. It's a reimagining that ensures that the EP leaves a lasting impression long after the final beat fades away.

Plus Naarm artist Zara casts meditative propulsive bass through the ethereal tones and natural sounds of Root Mender.

Both remixes complement their original predecessor, though naturally expanding the sonic realms that the EP stretches.

Pure Space :: Different Shades

For the first album release on Pure Space - and a welcome addition to our Home Listening Series - we are excited to present "At Every Corner" by Mara, a pivotal figure in Eora/Sydney's experimental music community.

Since 2020, the Home Listening series has showcased the introspective and wandering side of the label, featuring releases from Jennifer Loveless, jobfit, and 黑芝麻 (Hēi zhī ma). This series diverges from club constricts, inviting listeners to explore deeper, more contemplative soundscapes.

Throughout "At Every Corner", Mara weaves a rich tapestry of sound, creating captivating composites of audio snippets taken from her travels and performances along the way. The result is a mesmerising long-play that invites the listener into an ever wandering journey.

Andy Garvey returns with her second EP release on Pure Space and the fifth EP in her ever-evolving discography. Mastermind explores the dystopian edge of creativity in the digital age - where innovation wrestles with commodification, and connection clashes with chaos. 

Opening with the Mastermind (Tek Mix), the EP launches into foreboding synthesis and a hypnotic pulse, reflecting the restlessness to disconnect from the endless noise. The Deep Mix offers a more meditative twist, pulling the same driving energy into murkier depths.

Two remixes close out the EP with commanding flair. al dente sharpens the original’s edges, injecting razor-sharp percussion and undeniable bass momentum, while LOIF deconstructs Mastermind into a swirling, percussive reimagination steeped in eerie atmospherics.

Mastermind was born from a period of stasis - a creative block amplified by the demands of life and the weight of impactful decisions. It marks a re-emergence into purposeful execution, a declaration of timelessness, and a reminder that even after silence, the rhythm never really stops.

Bruxelles based https://soundcloud.com/stdjbreakfast (æther) shares a recording from the UMI x Badaboum 10 years takeover at UMI in Bruxelles in December 2024. 

Of all places, I met stdj on the dance floor at Organik Festival in Taiwan, and quickly found we shared an instant love of old minimal psy whilst watching DJ Tool roll it in on the Saturday night. 

Much of this set recording comes with that energy, pumping old school meets new flavours. A modern and progressive mix we are glad to welcome to the PSFM series.

Written between Gadigal Land (Petersham) and London (2023–2025), the EP reflects a deep fascination with unseen worlds - microbial communities thriving in extreme conditions, reacting to their environments in ways both alien and familiar.

Across four tracks, Pannotia explores a spectrum of tempos and moods, from the swampy and viscous to the clinical and mechanical. The EP opens with the title track Cell, a dense and hypnotic techno cut whose constantly evolving nature keeps you locked in. Life Cycle follows, a track driven by grinding lead synths and steady percussion that propels forward with restless motion. Biozone takes a more organic approach, mirroring ecological systems in constant flux.

Closing out the EP, Tessellate emerges as a doof-ready anthem, featuring the voice of Cyano in her musical debut - delivering a spoken exploration of microscopic landscapes. For good measure, a Dub Mix strips things back while maintaining the energy.

A contemporary snapshot of Pannotia’s sonic evolution, Cell is a dark, trippy, and ever-shifting ecosystem; alive with movement, modulation, and mutation.

Pure Space presents Black Smoke (2025 Remaster) by Andy Rantzen - our first-ever reissue, and a nod to a pivotal voice in Australia’s electronic music lineage.

Originally released in 2001 via the Creative Vibes compilation The Blue Hour Vol. 3: Deep Blue, Black Smoke is a deep cut from one of Eora/Sydney’s most quietly influential producers. Known for his work with Pelican Daughters, Itch-E & Scratch-E, and countless solo projects, Rantzen’s fingerprints are all over the foundations of Australian dance culture.

In revisiting the track for reissue, Andy uncovered three never-before-released alternate mixes buried deep in his DAT archive. Each offering a fresh perspective on the original’s tight tek percussion and deep soaring synths.

The newly remastered original lifts with propulsive clarity and analogue weight, while Alternative Mix 1 brings added bass pressure and sharpened percussion. Alternative Mix 2 introduces a classic acid lead, warping the groove into something more angular and elastic. Alternative Mix 3 slows the tempo and rinses the bassline, shifting the track into a darker, stauncher terrain - a twisted inversion of the original heat.

Nearly 25 years on, Black Smoke remains vital - a reminder that some frequencies never fade, they just keep mutating.

5RT delivers a cut that’s as heady as it is functional. Inconsistent Report is peak-time pressure sculpted with clinical precision; all tension, texture, and tectonic low-end. The kind of techno that mutates mid-set and flips dancefloors inside out.

CHEAHDX - Earthbound

Canadian born, Melbourne based Jennifer Loveless may be a familiar name for those acquainted with the Australian music scene. She frequently tours the country, however, her enigmatic productions might not be so familiar just yet… 

For her debut outing ‘Hard/Soft’ Jennifer presents an emotive 20 minute piece which holds its strength in exactly that, hard complexities and soft contrasts. A comforting beat sits underneath a complex array of melodies exploring tranquility and tension all at once. At times the narrative stretches and gives you the pleasure of zoning out before pulling you back into the foreground with structured percussion. Jennifer has a gift of playing with emotion, she raises goosebumps with a simple gentle keyboard melody. Contrasting that with a subtle muted beat and rounding out the piece with a heart-felt poem, the release speaks to the confidence of Jennifer’s artistic vision. 

Hard/Soft teeters on the edge of tension and calm throughout, all the while bringing you into a dream-like state. She makes it difficult to pick a side between Hard andSoft, and instead shows us the happy medium of finding the space between. 

The release is accompanied by visuals and prints created by Sydney-based artist Sophie Penkethman-Young. Sophie’s practice explores how experiences translate digitally, her work has been shown across Australia, HongKong, USA, Europe and the UK.

PS002.1 - Jennifer Loveless - Hard/Soft

Despite the days and hours all but losing their meaning, new rhythms emerge onto which we can grasp. A duo providing us with respite this year is Sydney’s jobfit.

With the intention of marrying two practices to find a sincere intersection of spoken word and electronic music we welcome jobfit to Pure Space Recordings with their release ‘Corner Sure’. An expansive 21 minute piece of poetically punctuated jungle.

Through the release spoken word becomes entangled with jungle-tinged rhythms, eluding to a playfulness while rubbing up against traditional poetic structures. Within this playfulness is an undeniable sense of discipline and restraint in their composition.

The first half of the release toys with you, building tension with drones and repetition. The melodies swirl and entwine themselves with the spoken word, enveloping you completely before retreating and leaving you in a raw moment. Halfway through the drones give way and you are swallowed by a challenging jungle rhythm. Tension continues to build before finally, the release gives you the space to breathe, take note and pay attention.

The constant reference to water within the piece and sampling of domestic environments allows an atmosphere in which jobfit reconfigure traditional musical and poetic structures.

jobfit have created a listening experience which plays with levels of control, at times it feels as though you’ve lost your grip before they guide you back to familiar ground. There is a constant flux between serious and playful tones, often dipping in and out of dramatic rhythms, cheeky pads or gentle words. jobfit have expertly created their own interpretation of home listening reminding us all that the ‘hardest’ music we listen to is often at home.

In accompaniment to this release, Craig Stubbs-Race has created a visualiser responding to the themes and ideas within the release. Craig is a 3D designer/artist with a passion for typography, experimental shapes, and communicating succinct messages through motion. With a background in film-making, his work is inspired by a range of text-based graphics including interactive digital art, book covers, band posters and East Asian signage.
