Last month, producer-vocalist LÂLKA unveiled her debut EP, The Way Music Looks. A fearless, confident and wholly ambitious display of self expression in its many forms, The Way Music Looks has been a long time coming but proves that things are worth waiting for when they sound this good. Always one to push her craft into new territory, and then push just a little further, LÂLKA remains one of the country’s most innovative producers, and a visionary of not just what music can be now, but what it can be for eras to come.

While The Way Music Looks will strike a chord with any PC Music/Charli XCX/Ninajirachi fan and those adjacent, it will also strike a cord with anyone who appreciates an artist not only mining their own lives for source material, but also one who is taking control and doing their own thing. With a refined and strong authenticity, it’s LÂLKA‘s self-awareness which shines through the most: she knows who she is and what she is about, and that remains intrinsic to every element of the project.

Speaking to the meaning of her debut EP, LÂLKA shares: “I have recently come to understand that the thing I’ve always wanted most, even when I was a child, was to be seen. An introvert in nature but absolutely bursting with the desire to express, I coveted the casual self-assurance I saw in others and the influence they exerted as I waited, invisibly, to be seen. Now here I am, after years of absorbing skills and coping mechanisms. Ready to show a facet of my psyche. Proud to show it. Here it is.”

To celebrate the release of The Way Music Looks, LÂLKA has put together an exclusive mix for us. Just like her own music, it’s very consistent with that same electrifying, forward-thinking and innovative sound we’ve come to expect from her. She turns the intensity all the way up, with a heavy helping of her own mash ups, edits and reworks as well as some originals and some personal favourites. It’s not for the faint-hearted (just the way we like it) and shows she really held nothing back on this one!

Over the past few years, Melbourne producer @alice-ivy has solidified herself as a staple in the Australian electronic music community.Her sound is a testament to more than just her creative ear, but also her respect for the collaborative process. She’s collaborated with some of the most diverse and exciting musicians in the game, including E^ST, Charlie Thread, Flint Eastwood, Bertie Blackman, Georgia van Etten and now, Ecca Vandal.

To celebrate hew new release, Ivy delivered a guest mix for our show on FBi Radio. The mix, dubbed ‘The Essential Pre-Party Mix Tape’ features every track you’ll ever need to get this damn party started. Melbourne’s @zeneth_altrow added ‘DJ’ to their long list of ‘slashes’ earlier in the year. The former radio announcer, artist manager, publicist and on-going event curator has always had a passion for commanding a crowd, and the move over to DJing allows them to do just that in an extremely tangible way.

To get to know Zeneth Altrow ahead of the event, they’ve put together a stellar guest mix that encompasses sounds from highly recognisable femme and queer artists, whilst ensuring that the tracks fit within the mix’s theme:

“This mix is very much inspired by my journey of learning how to truly love every part of myself, despite all the traumas I’ve had to deal with in the past,” they said.

“The themes explored within this mix revolve around accessibility, social structures, and bullying; exploring how that affects a person’s self-worth and self-love. The mix is also my way of encouraging those who’ve ever felt small to realise that they’re more than what they think they’re worth and deserve. They are THAT bitch! Ultimately, we are all powerful and it’s up to us to decide what we choose to do with that power. I’m calling this my ‘Attitude Adjustment’ mix.”

Purple Sneakers is one of Australia's most prominent niche music blogs. Our mission is to solely feature 'emerging club music' from around the world that we are passionate about.

We at Purple Sneakers were invited alongside other iconic Sydney electronic music crews (Future Classic, Motorik and Astral People) to present a weekly show on FBi Radio‘s digital radio channel called ‘Click’ that specialises in electronic music. FBi Click has been described as FBi Radio Sydney’s “most ambitious initiative in its 10 year history.” After two years, Click was merged into the regular radio channel live to air mid 2017, and Purple Sneakers was asked to go along with them – so of course we said yes.
