We are on the pinnacle of human history - where millions of farmers in India are losing the power to grow food of their own volition. Punjab’s farmers have suffered for generations through government-sanctioned displacement and exploitation. The most recent addition of salt to their wounds has been the introduction of 3 Farm Bills - which effectively privatize and corporatize Indian agriculture.Primarily, these ordinances would remove any guarantee of minimum support prices (MSPs) - causing the government to stop buying grain at guaranteed prices and result in exploitation by corporations that would buy the crops cheaply.
Currently there are hundreds of thousands of Punjab farmers marching on India’s capital. Those marching by foot and on tractor, also include seniors, women, and children. They are leading a peaceful protest against this privatization of agriculture. They’ve been met with aggressive force from Delhi Police, in the form of water cannons, teargas, and baton charges. The 3 farm bills were passed in a mockery of democracy. The farmers don’t want amendment - they demand repeal. We demand repeal.
