Techno stalwarts Heiko Laux & Joel Mull return to Drumcode for their first outing since 2016.

Friends and collaborators for over a decade, Heiko Laux and Joel Mull continue their fruitful partnership with a searing four-piece work. ‘Centipede’ is a thematic follow-up to ‘Rooter’, their last atmosphere-heavy production that dropped on Laux’s Kanzleramt imprint in 2017. A year earlier they teamed up for the vinyl-only ‘Munch’ EP on Drumcode Limited that explored subterranean techno grooves. 

Their latest work was created during an extended stay at Mull’s home in Stockholm while Laux was visiting for a show. The evocative ‘Contour’ brings the EP into focus, as delicate strings set an atmospheric tone. The title track ‘Centipede’ follows, a track tailor-made for deep Sunday afternoon rave explorations as a menacing riff runs throughout. ‘Bullet Ant’ is driven by industrial percussion and brain-bending synth effects that dip in and out throughout the muscular work. ‘Centipede’ (Morph) follows on from its namesake, teasing out some space and introducing melody to the palette for a deep late-night impact.

As Planetary Assault Systems, @Luke-Slater is an innovator of psychedelic mindfuck techno. Across a lengthy catalogue that stretches back into the 90s, the music’s bleepy, polyrhythmic loops are as recognizable as they are genre-defining. ‘Plantae’ is Slater’s first release as PAS on Ostgut Ton since ‘Arc Angel’ (2016) and covers the spectrum of PAS’s different strains while remaining grounded in Slater’s uncanny funk and knack for developing oblique melodies and rhythms over longer stretches. Deepness and hypnosis come as much through duration as sound design.

For Slater, ‘Plantae’ is made for Berghain, where he is a long-standing resident. In his own words: “I’m sure it’s no surprise that when it comes to putting together a release on Ostgut Ton, PAS takes on its more mind-altering, otherworldly quality by natural cause, quietly reflecting the dark sweaty nights and days at the club; at the point, the common neural coupling, of us all together. PAS has been part of Berghain and Berghain part of PAS for a long time. All of these tracks needed to pass the Berghain test in my sets first stop.”

This time Anthony Linell cuts his peerless supply four ways in four tracks. Short on hubris, and economical to the point of being cruel, 'Core Field Horizon' relents in all the right places to make the effects of its peaks and troughs impossible to defend against. The opening track is a deluge. Spinning on its hydro-blasted synth line, the gravitational pull erases and ensnares in equal disordering measure. On its heel is the EP's title track, an austere display of the venom in the seam between his club-focused work and his experimental output. 'Evaporating Entities' is one of Linell's most diaphanous works to date, and after weaving through the sky we are abruptly subjected to the gravity of the closing track's nerves.

SYXT has its roots in Berlin with owners Ketch and MZR at the helm. Launched in 2018 there have been contributions from artists like Tom Hades, Vegim, Mary Velo and XHEI.

The latest release is their third compilation release made of sixteen original tracks and that welcomes producers like Juan Trujillo, Hitam, MZR, Müzmin, Shkedul and many others showcasing a wide variety of eclectic techno styles in one place.

Sweden’s Samuel L Session is known as a veteran in the scene, releasing music from 1996 and running numerous label projects over the years such as SLS, Cycle and Klap Klap as well as his music landing on illustrious imprints such as Slam’s Soma, Adam Beyer’s Drumcode, or ARTS.

For this DT:Premiere we selected his track “Suspended Animation” that is a prime example of less is more. Hypnotic and subtle, the groove flows effortlessly with suspense and knob-twiddling tweaks to keep you attentive to the smallest changes, completed with captivating claps dripping in atmospherical tension to top off a truly enchanting treasure.
