Here is another of my early Victor high fidelity 78s.  This is a 1931 recording by Johnny Hamp's Orchestra playing they wonderfully titled  Ooh Hoo! You Hoo! (Don't You Know The Moon Is New-oo"

This cylinder is recorded from a Victor Orthophonic Record, The cutter is acoustic, made in 1898 by Thomas Edison's National Phonograph company. This is an experiment with blue silicone gaskets, this material makes super soft gaskets, extending the sensitivity and bass response, of the early recorder, notice how NON acoustic it sounds. A Western Electric tube amplifier was used to power a Pioneer full range speaker which is encapsulated in a 27" recording horn.  The cylinder in the photo is a new Borri Audio Laboratories Master wax cylinder made to Edison's specifications from raw materials it is an aluminun soap compound.

Here's a rousing and scarce 78 from my collection. It is a Columbia Royal Blue recording by Jack Payne's Band, recorded in England. It's the bouncy and infectious RHYTHMITIS.

Another Vitaphone disk I got this week is for #427 FRED WARING AND HIS PENNSYLVANIANS (February, 1927).  It is one of the earliest Vitaphone band shorts.  He made two that day and the second is restored. Here they play two pop tunes: "Breezin' Along With The Breeze" (sung by Fred's brother Tom and "Me Too" with the entire band.

This is a great rendition of DINAH by Williams Purple Knights recorded January 2, 1931. While released on a commercial Victor, I got a mint white and gold label special pressing of it (see photo of label).  One of my favorite sides.

Here is a rare, unfortunately incomplete, fragment of the Kraft show of August 2nd, 1934.  Ramona Davies calls out solos from Johnny Mercer, Jack Teagarden, and others in a spirited rendition of "La Cucaracha."

Another lost Fox short subject, this one is MAX FISHER'S ORCHESTRA from 1927.  As with most of the Fox films, the picture element is lost, but here is the soundtrack disk. The bad plays TIGER RAG.
