Q-Burns Abstract Message is an expert time traveler. But it’s not about the physical transportation of bodies into the past or future. Instead, these are sonic waves, vibrating in all directions, touching different eras and territories. Like a Stalker entering ‘The Zone,’ Q-BAM is forever in search of the undefinable. He’ll know it when he sees it, and today it’s looking like an AUDIOTOTEMPOLE.

M. Donaldson is Q-Burns Abstract Message, formerly broadcasting with Astralwerks and a handful of other co-conspirators. Over the decades he’s wielded turntables in locales from Novosibirsk to Antofagasta, but now he’s mostly quiet. Occasionally Q-Burns Abstract Message pops up in someone’s mix set, or mentioned in a blog post, or perhaps in an odd remix. But, for the most part, he’s a known unknown.

Now he’s reappeared, clutching an AUDIOTOTEMPOLE. It’s an homage to a secret history without the stain of nostalgia. These are songs spanning the lost years, buzzing with electricity and ritual ambiguity. “Tremble,” for example, is handed down from clouds, signaling Q-BAM’s transition from mystic to mystical. “Kept in a Shadehouse” undulates in continuous motion, brightly placing tones in orbit around its bristling center. And “Touchtones (1997)” is an earthy clue, creating the temporal connection — past meets present, full circle.

I'm sort of a sucker for guitars in dance music. It's probably from a youth immersed in <A HREF="http://www.factoryrecords.net/">all those Manchester bands</A> but I do indeed like how chiming guitars and electronic drum beats go together. Thus I was immediately drawn to South African combo <A HREF="http://www.myspace.com/bangbangsa">Bang Bang</A> and their "<A HREF="http://soundcloud.com/eighth-dimension/bikini-days">Bikini Days</A>", a cool and gentle track certainly evoking some sort of beachside romp. Quickly snatched up and released on my Eighth Dimension label, I dug the song enough to partake in a remix of my own. You can hear the result here:


I kind of went for a psychedelic, Balearic feel making the aforementioned guitars all twisty and using the vocal verse of the song as if it were the chorus. The rhythms build a bit and the full brunt of the bass doesn't really kick in until over halfway through (an exercise in patience on my part). I like the idea of the focused bits interchanging with the atmospheric sections, sort of like a camera lens in close-up suddenly pulling back for the wide shot.

Swerving into something new with Grottoes, gathered together in a damp, smokey room feeling the chains released and surrounded by the hum of prurience. This is the sound of MDonaldson closing the door (tightly shut) on Q-Burns Abstract Message and venturing elsewhere. Music is like a maze that's always rearranging and these paths zigzag repeatedly into layers that fade together into colorful washes of light haze. Thus, "Straw Belle" is a sequence of events. Penetrable, despite our best intentions.

Invisible Airwaves #49 (January 2014 DJ Mix)

I’m not one for numerology or giving questionable meanings to certain numbers, but #50 has a bit of finality about it and is as good as any. That’s over 100 hours of DJ mixes, and I’ve been doing them steadily each month for over four years (really?). I’ve gotten so much great feedback and sincere praise for these mixes, and it’s been a blast doing them. It’s also interesting listening to how my tastes and style have slowly changed over the course of 50 mixes. This didn’t start out as an experiment, but it certainly became one that was enlightening and fun. So, yes - if you hadn’t guessed already, I’m suspending the Invisible Airwaves series at this latest one, #50. It’s not an easy decision … I love, love, love doing these and even when I’m unsure how the mix will come out I’m always pleasantly surprised and deeply into how the songs I’ve selected somehow fit together. And let me tell you about this latest one: it’s my favorite mix in a while. I just feel it’s particularly lovely, and it makes me believe I’m ending on a high note, which is cool. There are a few reasons I’m ending Invisible Airwaves, and none of them are terrible. Well, I have less and less time to put these together each month, and I guess the fact I don’t have more hours in my day is kind of terrible. Making this show every month really takes a lot out of my schedule. I spend hours selecting and mixing the tunes for each episode and, as more things have plopped onto my plate, something had to give. But on to the good news. I’m working on new music. This is my new music year and I plan on getting through it with an impressive number of tunes under the belt. The show has to step aside to accommodate this, but I’ll be happy to share some new music soon in return. I also won’t be absent from the world of DJ mixes. For one thing, I’ll be able to do guest mixes for other shows again, which I haven’t been able to do in a while. I also will be the producer for another radio show that is launching in April that I’ll be able to tell you about soon. I won’t be mixing every month on this new show, but I will be the main ‘resident DJ.’ So I’m not going anywhere, and neither are my mixes. You’ll notice I say above that I’m ’suspending’ Invisible Airwaves, not ending it. It’s possible I’ll change my mind, or start it up again, say, a year from now. I’m not comfortable closing that door. But, for now, I hope you enjoy mix #50. I’m thankful and humbled by your listenership these past four years. A dark, foreboding stillness, thick fog through the treetops, a mysterious cabin in the woods, and an ominous force within. This imagery obliquely provided inspiration to Q-Burns Abstract Message for his debut EP on EIGHT-TRACKS, "Chainsaw." The title refers to a climactic scene in an infamous American low-budget horror movie. Incidentally, it might also reference how Q-BAM almost took a chainsaw to his studio equipment while creating this track. The Analog Version was meant to be recorded almost entirely with vintage hardware but as the session commenced the Juno-106 started sputtering, the tape on the Chorus Echo snapped, the circuits on the ASR-10 gave off an odor like burnt candle wax, and so on.

Circumventing such ghosts in the machinery, this version of "Chainsaw" ends up a rambunctious and quirky house builder complete with filtered beats, a pounding bassline, squelchy guitar hits, and a buzzing chainsaw synth melody. Like many Q-Burns Abstract Message tracks "Chainsaw" sits firmly between several house music micro-genres while affirming the frenzied accident of its creation.

Q-Burns Abstract Message follows this with two radically self-remixed versions. The first, a Loose Version, attempts to take the American fright flick impetus and move it to a more Italian, Argento-inspired location. The tempo is reduced to a lurching slink and some analog remnants are applied, including juicy spring reverb bass stabs. Haunted pianos and spooky synth strings abound. Next, Q-BAM's Balearic Version attempts a resolution; the ending credits theme, perhaps. Here a breezy and vibrant Spanish-guitar led rendition closes out the EP on an uplifting note.

Suddenly, a pair of remixers were selected who were thought to be in tune with "Chainsaw"'s off-kilter motif. The Italian duo Ajello burst forth with a synth-powered disco revelation that takes the sinister overtone and boldly throws it towards the dancefloor. São Paulo's rising house music talent Jota Wagner also tackles the theme with a funky confidence. His steadily evolving remix piles on layers of melody and rhythm, at one point giving way to a demonic cackle. Mysterious business throughout.

Q-Burns Abstract Message's "Chainsaw" introduces a busy year for the seasoned electronic music producer. In addition to his constant stream of remixes and DJ work Q-BAM is currently recording a follow-up EP as well as his long-awaited album project. This is a remix I produced circa 2000 of a track by a well-known female pop star and using beats by a semi-well-known German techno outfit (the artwork alludes to the identities of both). It was actually commissioned by the pop star's label but was never released, save for 500 sneaky vinyl copies I pressed up and gave away to my friends. I totally forgot about this remix until a friend reminded me yesterday, asking for a MP3 copy. As I have no idea what happened to the original audio masters (probably in a box of DATs in my closet) this is a vinyl rip. I'm making it downloadable to all ... enjoy and feel free to share with your friends, post online, etc.

Touchtones (1997)

This is an unreleased remix of the rave classic "The Bee" by The Scientist, commissioned by the Kickin label around 2002, but sadly never used. The label didn't have the stems so I remixed it from the song master, 're-edit' stylee. The idea, I believe (those years are a bit fuzzy), was to translate the track into that funky house sound that was prevalent in the early '00s. I hope that you enjoy it.

Kicksy & Alif Groove - Out Of Nowhere (Q-Burns Abstract Message Remix) (Plastic Fantastic)

Today, in a hidden folder on a dusty hard drive, I discovered an MP3 of a long lost mixtape recorded in the summer of 1997. I have no idea where this MP3 came from. The audio quality isn't the best — it's a dub of a cassette tape, after all — but THESE TUNES. I love all of them. I have the fondest memories of playing these at Knock Knock, in the backroom of Phat N' Jazzy, and, with increasing frequency, in dark rooms across the globe. Sigh. 

This might be my favorite mixtape I ever recorded which is really something as I had another 20 years of mixing ahead of me at this point.

Another note: as much as I love all these songs I don't remember what most of them are. So, if you need a track ID, I'll do my best but don't be disappointed if I respond with ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
