Also known as the Valse de l'adieu (Farewell Waltz), this posthumously published waltz was written for Maria Wodzińska, to whom Chopin was once engaged, if not for his poor health. Its discursive melody winds between melancholy and ecstasy, which together with its sense of understated passion, provides a miniature glimpse into Chopin's private life.
