This week we bring you part 2 of our exploration of the Cambridge Analytica Scandal — cast in a very different light. In part 1 we took a look at Christopher Wylie’s origin story and the sketchy science behind the supposed “psychological warfare mindfuck tool” Steve Bannon employed within Cambridge Analytica on behalf of Robert Mercer, which, the story goes, won the election for Donald Trump by manipulating the masses. In part 2, we’re gonna be taking a look at Wylie’s attempt to create his own Cambridge Analytica, how he turned into the supposed do-gooder whistleblower in the first place, and what it means for the accepted narrative about the scandal.

We are joined again by guest writer Anthony Mansuy, a French reporter for Society Magazine. For this two-parter, Anthony conducted months of research and forty exclusive interviews. You’ll be hearing from Cambridge Analytica employees, data scientists, former Obama, Trump and Cruz campaign staffers, as well as friends and associates of Chris Wylie.

The evidence lays out how Wylie spread numerous fabrications and exaggerations to minimize his contribution to the development of Cambridge Analytica's tools and conceal the true causes of his departure from the organization. More importantly, Wylie capitalized on the deepest fears held by the liberal media about the far-right, social media, and Russia; allowing him to craft the perfect narrative to fit the political moment — one that persists to this day.

"Our progress has been part of the living history of America," President Jimmy Carter declared in a 1979 speech. "America is a nation of progress, of moving forward," Senator Chuck Grassley stated in 2022 on the Senate floor. "The story of America is a story of progress and resilience, of always moving forward, of never, ever giving up. It's a story unique among all nations," President Joe Biden announced in his 2023 State of the Union.

For decades - even centuries - policymakers, and media on their behalf, have employed some variation on the same rhetorical theme: the United States is a nation of progress, especially so-called "racial progress." Though our Great Experiment has been imperfect, we're told, it's constantly improving, steadily and automatically forging ahead toward its ideal state. Yes, we've been home to the violent oppression of untold sums of people, but look how far we’ve come!

There have objectively been political gains for all groups historically and currently denied basic rights in the U.S. This is obvious. But the trajectory is far from linear, raising the question: How far have "we" really come? Are people, especially Black, Latino, and Native people, less likely to suffer through poverty than any time before now? Are police and prisons any less violent? To what extent have U.S. law and policymaking really evolved?

On this episode, we dissect the liberal assertion that social, particularly racial, progress in the U.S. is inevitable, that there's this comforting "arc" of history bending towards justice. We examine how this idea came to be, who gets to define the metrics of "progress," and why it's dangerous to advance the tidy Vaseline-lens narrative that societal improvement is part of some preordained future.

Usually, telling lies on the internet is Constitutionally protected. 

But what happens when it’s not? What happens when you post and meme so hard and so maliciously that you go far outside the realm of protected speech and wind up in a federal prison. That’s the story of a 33-year-old man named Douglass Mackey, who operated a few Twitter accounts under the name Rickey Vaughn. Using these accounts he spread Pizzagate lies, racist tropes, and also messages deliberately designed to mislead people into giving up their right to vote. On May 31st, Douglass Mackey was convicted of Election Interference in the 2016 presidential race after a one week trial.

To better understand this case we spoke to someone who has been covering it for years: Michael Edison Hayden from the Southern Poverty Law Center. We chat about Douglass Mackey’s background, the crime he was found guilty of committing, and what it means for the future of online disinformation campaigns. We also discuss the trial’s involvement of “Microchip,” a notorious troll who is currently working as a federal informant.
