This ‘Little Wonder’ / ‘Constantin’ release is an introduction and taste of what is to come from Martin Merkel in 2018 with the release of his ‘Constantin’ album – a creative project inspired by his emotional journey over the past year and honouring the recent birth of his son. His joining forces with the legendary Platipus Records marks a bold new direction in the label’s evolution, as its creative ethos develops in an exciting Tech House / Melodic Techno direction. The inclusion here of a dynamic remix of ‘Little Wonder’ by recent Bedrock (‘Oblivion’) stars Luke Brancaccio & Simon Berry (Union Jack / Art Of Trance) is an excellent further indicator of the label’s future sonic landscape.

The immediately infectious ‘Little Wonder’ has a timeless quality that makes exceptional music become so treasured. Martin Merkel creates a masterful blend of switching elements as he layers atmospheric excellence over a deeply powerful percussive groove. Building on the original’s complexity, Simon Berry & Luke Brancaccio proceed to lift the track to another level with their remix. A sophisticated, pulsing groove, blended with teasing acidic motifs, this is a master-class in subtle genius as they build a voyage into the realms of peak-time Techno with a distinct filmic, emotive edge. This new duo’s recent output is already finding favour with the likes of John Digweed, Kolsch, Yotto, Nick Warren, Guy Mantzur, Coyu, Victor Ruiz and many other top DJs; and with a new single lined up on Yousef’s Circus label for the New Year, this remix is a taste of more excellence to come.

In perfect contrast to the infectious energy of ‘Little Wonder’, and completing this introductory package perfectly, Martin Merkel’s delightfully different ‘Constantin’ is built on an almost tranquil, low-slung groove, enhanced with hypnotic pulsating motifs and distinctive layers of intricate, heart-melting, melody rich, mood changing moments – a perfect teaser for his album coming in January 2018.

Originally inspired as an artist by the experimental attitude of Italo Disco and the embryonic Techno scene, via parties at the likes if Dorian Grey and Omen (Frankfurt) and Tresor (Berlin), Martin Merkel’s nascent career saw him develop an early love of analogue synthesisers – and saw him fill his studio with a desirable collection of Moog, Roland and Waldorf machinery. In recent years he has moved towards a more compact, travel-friendly digital studio set-up, but his love of synthesisers remains a defining characteristic of his uniquely distinctive musical output today. A master of sonic excellence and musicality, his creations have previously often crept out on the likes of Cinematique, Bonzai, Secondary Tones, JOOF, Monkey Business, Neverending and his own Shelter 54 imprint. Now, under the auspicious guidance of Platipus Records the most exciting new chapter of his career is about to begin.

The label boss is back on his own imprint and has snatched a long companion from the Amber family. The result is a cooperation between Wall Brown and Heinrich & Heine, which mentions the name "Kyano" and which one probably would not have expected. Because the main track is rather a bit amber-untypical therefore and impresses with a mega groove, a cool vocal and a guarantee for full dancefloors.

But to make sure that everything goes well with the label, Daniel Levak contributed a great remix, which is also absolutely untypical for his standards. Normally he is based in the tech-house, but has delivered an absolute techno-bomb here. Nevertheless, retained the flavor of the original and just super fit packed in a new, contemporary garb. Just great.

A release that is a bit out of line, but also shows that Amber Records can not be limited and always tries to break new ground. Hello catalog number: 054

Wall Brown, Heinrich & Heine - Kyano (Daniel Levak Remix) Snippet

Hitting another high point on his Proton Music journey, Soulwerk's "Unknown Dimension" saw a wonderful two-track EP hit the charts in December 2019. Now a pair of remixes come from Latvian and Indian stars.

An artist with a rich musical heritage, Ivars Tiliks has created an impressive set of credentials through his Subconscious Tales pseudonym. From his Latvian home in Valmeira, to the north-east of the Riga capital, immaculate production techniques with "carefully tuned and visualised sounds" have become a pathway "into an unlimited world of musical fantasy". Almost 200 production credits thus tell their own story of Subconscious Tales' success with a collection of original and remix production material finding itself onto such esteemed imprints as Suffused Music, Balkan Connection and JOOF.

The "Twisted" EP for Particles in June 2017 was an impressive offering, while "July 2019's twin-track "Magnectares" saw a super Proton Music debut. Subsequent remixes from James Monro and Kasper Koman added a further touch of class to an already notable debut. Returning to remix Soulwerk, the Subconscious Tales interpretation of "Funchal" is full of the rhythmic dynamism that has become a trademark of his work. Further enhanced by a driving grooved bassline that propels the track forward, familiar melodic refrains ripple across the mid-range, further extended by new motif and arpeggio that are rooted in Soulwerk's original. Hitting its stride in the third movement with a precise combination of rhythm and melody, the result is a strong advert for Subconscious Tales' talent.

An artist operating out of the New Delhi capital, Vridian is keen to explore a wide range of musical genres that span electronica, deep house and melodic techno. Able to appreciate the necessary fundamentals to move audiences from in front of and behind the DJ decks, a well-travelled Vridian became resident at the "Gorg-O-Mish" club during a stay in British Colombia's coastal city of Vancouver. 2017 saw a production debut with the "Perplexed" EP on Mystery Train Recordings while more recent work has seen the Indian producer feature on Traum, Nie Wieder Schlafen and Mark Slee & Atish's Manjumasi imprint with "Silverfish" in September 2019. November also saw a further notable highlight in Qilla Records' "Knowbot".

Now debuting on Proton Music, the Vridian rework of "Funchal" retains the melodic hallmark of the original, extending beyond with a raft of new and sparkling motifs that ripple across the stereo spectrum with ease. Building effortlessly with a combination of metronomic rhythmic programming and intelligently placed fx washes, a subline new melodic sequence supplies a stunning new layer to Soulwerk's track and showcases Vridian's skill in abundance.
