French producer Paul Roux writes music for stargazing. The cinematic style speaks to the human connection, rhythmic like a heartbeat, tickling the sensations with its raw, evocative energy. The Humanity EP follows up the producer’s debut album World as Memorial Home, projecting the artist yet further into a spiritual and ghostly sound, rooted in that classic Chicago aesthetic. It’s a sound that speaks to every one of us, and one that is forever human.

It was with the 2021 release No Doubt on the Dutch label ARTS, that really established Paul Roux as an artist with an ear for ethereal, dreamlike and experimental rhythm records; a sound he’s helped propagate though his labels Venom Recordings, Rapid Eye Movement, and his more recent project, Wide Division.

Following the recent, and highly praised release Emperia on Alan Fitzpatrick’s We Are The Brave imprint, the French producer was asked to return to the fold with the Humanity EP, released on Fitzpatrick’s electronica label, Apex Faction,

“What I appreciate about art and music is its strength, power, and ability to provide escapism and a moment to question ourselves,” Roux says about the record. “We live in a fast-paced world where overconsumption is rife. I wanted to create some time out, with the Humanity EP acting as a personal therapy for me; A self-assessment of nature and of things I find essential in life.” 

The record leads off with ‘Humanity’, a track drenched in melancholic strings, haunting soundscapes, and a gentle rhythmic flow, creating a deep yet powerful opus. ‘Adventure’ picks up the tempo, with a soulful house beat and balearic, sombre strings, like a crescendo of waves. Indeed, it was the outdoors that provided so much inspiration for the record. “The environment inspires me, so when I create music, I go on an adventure and try to share my feelings and vision,” Roux says about the production process. “When creating Humanity, I’m dreaming of a warm place… where the skies are blue, and the birds sing.” 

‘Forevermore’ starts off with a poignant 2002 monolog about global warming by Jacques Chirac. It’s sweeping, cinematic interludes, deep chords, and an ever-present resonance, lock its tender hooks into the listeners’ soul before ‘Blue Lines’ finishes the EP, making use of sensual pads and a shimmering, percussive beat to fathom a deep, sonic canvas that talks directly to the human condition.

Rarefact is the title of Vishal Unni's upcoming release on Qilla Records and the track we happily host its premiere. Smoothly and gradually, its subterranean groove shakes its foundation and provokes, in turn, an unintentional mood elevation and body participation. Thus, complemented by tender pads and flickering background noise, the loop embraces us as it carefully unwinds. Leading, then, to a delightfully rewarding drop that introduces us to the track's closing chapter. A high-quality dance composition reminiscing adventurous excursions to obscure and dark dance floors. Or, in Vishal's words: "an ode to the Indian dance floors". Along with it, a discussion with the producer about his last release for 2022 with some intriguing details.

MNMT Premiere: Vishal Unni - Rarefact

After contributing a remix of Analog Context's 'Amygdala' and a track on the Artmosphere Volume 3 compilation, the Qilla Records A&R Vishal Unni is back with a six-track EP 'Rarefact' that also features remixes from ZRK and Martyn Päsch. 

Vishal is a Bangalore-based producer & DJ with a sound that can be described as a symbiosis of the deeper realms of techno, laced with futuristic soundscapes and psychedelic characteristics.

Our premiere for today, 'Asthayi,' is a dark, hypnotic broken-beat escapade infused with classic 303 acid synths. 

'Rarefact' releases on December 5th, with pre-orders on November 21st.

Ross Harper’s acclaimed recent LP, ‘The Dark Album’ has been supported by a wide range of international press, radio and leading DJs. ‘My Gift’ has been a highlight of several of Richie Hawtin’s sets whilst Charlotte de Witte called it “beautiful”. Sasha, Kölsch, Jennifer Cardini, Maceo Plex, John Digweed, and Skream alongside many others have also been praising the album. 

'The Dark Album' remixes feature handpicked artists Ross Harper personally holds in high regard. 

To put this in a framework, Harper was recently asked in an interview with The DJ Sessions, for his opinion of Ghost Producers and furthermore what we can expect when in the near future tracks are produced by AI? As a DJ, Harper’s answer was simple, it is his job to filter out tracks that do not have feeling, more specifically, Harper is listening for tracks that have heart and soul, in fact Harper’s monthly radio show has the name, “House & Techno w/ Heart & Soul”.

The artists Harper has invited to remix tracks from 'The Dark Album' are producers who have exhibited the anti-thesis of Ghost Producers and AI, they are special individuals who have something that cannot be mimicked, hidden, faked, they have something unique and different that makes them stand out from the chatter.

Harper’s DJ sets are free and boundless, and so this is what fans can expect to hear in the remixes, from rich ambient soundscapes, to driving epic arpeggiated leads, to hard, gritty machine beats, to beautiful textures and softness, all fixed in a diverse cross-range of genres with end results that are almost impossible to tie down and categorise.

In Volume 1 we hear from Cie, Nickon Faith and Roi.

Colonge’s Cie breaks in with a hybrid creation, taking Harper’s bleeps, squeaks and synth choir from 'Something New' and weaving them through intelligent syncopated hypnotic techno grooves, the result is an entrancing tapestry that draws the mind deeper and deeper into the patterns, until suddenly, it all ends.

Manchester’s Nickon Faith fearlessly takes on 'Humanistic Correction' and brings with him an entire intergalactic orchestra of sound. In Faith’s ‘Drifting' remix 'Humanistic Correction' becomes a multi-layered symphonic masterpiece. The first section is led by a wandering melody while contrastingly the second section gives way to a structured arppegio. Harper challenged Faith to develop the second section in a new version, and hence the ‘Epic' remix came to being, with the 'Epic Edit' being a consolidation of the beauty and intensity.

Heralding from Galicia’s coast, Fanzine’s Roi strikes out first with his 'Retro Future' breaks remix of 'The Power of Three', feel the raw power of Roi’s proximity to wild Atlantic ocean in his driving electro baseline that compliments perfectly against the soft, dreamy synths from Harper’s original. Not content Harper nudged Roi again, this time for a 4/4 remix, so, with a hint of something like an early disco classic but adorned with drones and squelchy melodic lines that would be more at home in Jabba The Hutt’s lair then Paradise Garage, the 'Cosmic Disco' remix came to be.
