That sound is me typing. Usually writing a paper of two or three thousand words is very boring. The sound of my fingers typing on the keyboard is what motivates me. Actually, for me, I enjoy the sound of typing. This sounds pleasant to me because it makes me feel that I am closer to finishing my essay. But I realized that I was typing too loudly, and I should try to lower the volume in the future to reduce the impact of the noise on others.

That sound is me blowing my nose. My seasonal rhinitis has flared up again. Recently, I have to blow my nose every day, which is really uncomfortable. The sound is likely to annoy others, and some might even be afraid to hear it because they might think I have the coronavirus. I hope I can get better soon.

This is the sound of me touching my face while doing my homework. I usually touch my face when I'm thinking, and sometimes I touch the acne on my face. It's bad for my skin. I must break this bad habit.

I am interested in the sequence of these sounds: typing, blowing nose, touching face. What do these have in common? I suppose the fingers. I am curious to hear you explore the sounds themselves, as disembodied from the source, the body—what are the sounds outside of what causes them, or why they exist: outside of your rhinitis, your skin, your getting work done. And, if you go further, how do recording devices such as your phone change these sounds, your perception of them, and the ability to actually hear yourself back blowing your nose, or doing that “bad habit” you shouldn’t be doing?

City Sound

This is my native language. I am from China and my native language is not Mandarin but Cantonese. Cantonese is a very special language.It has nine tones, which are very different from Mandarin. So it's a very difficult language to learn. Mandarin is now the official language in China, although in my hometown, children have been taught Mandarin at school since childhood. Fewer people speak Cantonese. I am afraid that one day Cantonese will disappear. I recorded some monologues from Cantonese songs. I think adding monologues to a song makes it more emotional and makes the listener feel like they're not just listening to the music, but like someone is telling a story. Monologues can be perfectly integrated into Cantonese songs. In my recording, I said a few wrong words. I feel that I seldom speak Cantonese since I went to university. Everyone around me speaks Mandarin or English, and I feel that my Cantonese level has declined. Hopefully this language will be known and used by more people in the future.
