Growing up Dana Horn had two passions and, while one of them was teaching, it was not the one she immediately pursued. As Robert Frost would say, she took a road “less traveled.” She started working in television and media and, after several years, she decided that it was time to pursue her real passion, teaching.

Green Girls is an after-school and summer program organized by the City Parks Foundation connecting girls in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades with STEM, photography, video and NYC’s great outdoors. Participants experience and enjoy science learning, service projects, adventures, and taking action in the community.
In this episode, the girls learn about drinking water education in New York City, including watersheds, the way water is used, and the way we treat water once it is used. The students are working on a project outlining everything they have learned about watersheds during the course of the after-school program.

A graduate of Vassar College, Dr. Fonseca holds a master’s degree and a PhD in French Literature from Fordham University. She began her educational career as a French and Spanish high school and college teacher. In tribute, the Masters School, where she was headmaster for many years, recently named their new Athletics and Arts Center after her. Maureen Fonseca has spent her life helping young people succeed and she still continues to serve that mission.

The workshop provides insights, strategies, tools, and techniques for conquering the little voice inside our heads that whispers self-defeating thoughts. Learning to toot their own horns about their accomplishments is something that the young girls will walk away with.
