The name Burr Oak should already be very familiar to Trendkill Records’ most ardent followers. The emergent drum and bass supergroup, formed of Toulouse producers Opsen and The Clamps, burst onto the scene last year, striking listeners with their intense, no-holds-barred approach to neurofunk. Drawing on their ever-innovative sound design skills and prolific work rate, the two Frenchmen crafted a whopping four releases for the Prolix-helmed label last year and have since guested on Eatbrain and Cause4Concern in 2020. Now celebrating a homecoming of sorts, October finds the pair returning to Trendkill for the Polar Lows EP, which features a seismic alliance with Austrian duo TR Tactics. 

Showcasing their production prowess, the individual contributions from each member of Burr Oak shine through over the course of the three-track project. As a former member of the innovative trio Signs, well-known for their halftime contributions to labels like Noisia’s Division, Opsen audibly leaves his mark on opener and title track “Polar Lows”, which utilises flourishes of snarling, hip-hop inspired breakbeats before searing synths launch it into a riotous climax. Meanwhile, some of the blistering basslines on show throughout the EP are well-aligned with The Clamps’ signature sound, the sum of the two’s contributions making for phenomenal results. 

Add Trendkill labelmates TR Tactics into the mix on “Washoku” and expect a four-way collaboration of epic proportions, deploying both heavyweight synth work and fleeting, atmospheric pauses. Rounding off the EP is the brooding, progressive “Intelligent Suicide”. Introduced with melancholy ambiances and subdued stabs before hurtling towards a gritty, mechanical crescendo garnished with whirring feedback and drilling basses, the song makes for one of the pair’s most intriguing creations to date, serving as a firm reminder that these two titans of the neuro scene have plenty more tricks up their sleeves.

By this point, Tobax should need no introduction. The decorated Russian drum and bass producer has now been affiliated with the Cause4Concern and Red Light Records family for more than three years, his signature clanking, mechanical style of neurofunk making him one of the label’s most popular exports. His latest outing on C4C, 2019’s Blur Effect EP, found him at his most experimental, rowdily remixing Gydra’s “Beatdown” and even dabbling in grungy techno. Having since unleashed a spree of releases with other respected labels including Eatbrain, Bad Taste and Play Me, the Samara DJ/producer now makes a triumphant return to C4C with “Steinhagel (2020 VIP)”, a jittering rework of his stellar cut from the label’s landmark 2019 compilation, the 20 Years LP.

Retaining the original track’s choppy basslines and syncopated snares, the VIP preserves the best elements of the song’s initial arrangement while giving it a thrilling number of new twists and turns. While some of the additions to the track – like its swirling synth arpeggios – are subtle, yet effective, its most exciting facet is undoubtedly the boundless energy of its second drop, which features electrifying stop-starts and cutting-edge sound design, adding even more intensity to the already unrelenting track. Tracks like this only further cement Tobax’s already worldwide reputation as one of the subgenre’s most consistent contributors to date; stay tuned for more to come from this prolific mastermind.

Forbidden Society returns on his self-titled label following his EP release on Noisia’s acclaimed Vision Recordings, as well as his ‘Liminal Point’ LP which he dropped at the start of 2020. This time the Czech pioneer follows up on these climatic releases with a single which will once again hint at the producer and DJs undeniable work ethic. Known for being one of the most recognised figures in Czechia, he’s renowned for bringing his cut-throat sounds to thousands of people across Europe, something which has currently been put on hold within a live setting; but he’s still pushing forward by delivering his music to the vast audiences he’s built within the online world too. Both ‘Spectral’ and ‘Hypno’ are a testament to his success, even within uncertain times.
‘Spectral’ is drawn for first on top of understated pads and ethereal bass sounds cutting into the mix, as your gradually pulled into its first build up. As it breaks, you’re left to drown in the tracks impactful subs. Meanwhile, ‘Hypno’ follows the same more stripped back pattern Forbidden Society has been moving towards. With a driving, yet raw percussive force, ‘Hypno’ is intoxicating in its roll out. It’s another expertly crafted release from Forbidden Society, one which signals that there’s more to come from the label owner in the latter half of 2020. He’s still continuing to push his influence.
