DJ Sodeyama’s murky alias The People in Fog is up next for a very special number. The DJ/producer has been active since the 90s, reshaping his home city, extensively touring the globe, releasing music, founding record labels (Arpa) and toying with different incarnations of his palette under a few different names. The People In Fog is one such project, founded a decade ago as license to lean into his more disco and house inclinations, a means of connecting with a lighter penchant for Chicago-style and Balearic rhythms. It’s a manifestation that’s given the world several first-rate releases like debut album A Ray of Light (2013), Album: 1977 (2021) and this year’s Too Much Knobs and Cables. His whistle-stop promo tour of Japan for that latest release has been whipping up plenty of shifting grooves and phase distortions, and delivering that fresh take on sound to IRL crowds in his native land. For the rest of us, the nine-tracker’s a perfect source for summer anthems: a fuzzy, analog patchwork of synths and low-end bass. Bassiani Podcast 273 takes all of this and turns up the heat, The People In Fog’s deep reverence for underground sounds is here for a two-hour mash up of grimy percussions and sensuous urban sounds. One of techno’s true underground heroes, Function steps in with a mix that captures the essence of his club sound: deep, dark, hypnotic and intensely layered. Cerebral yet physical, this set distills over 30 years of experience into a rolling trip that’s as uncompromising as it is immersive.

Recorded in Berlin with a Xone 96, with Function’s signature sound design woven throughout, the mix bridges heavyweight classics and future-shaping material. Kicking off with Nastia Reigel’s massive new remix of his own Disaffected, it showcases three tracks from her upcoming debut album Identity (out September 26 on Infrastructure).

The selection runs wide: from Regis, Rødhâd, LSD, Nørbak, Nastia Reigel, Ignez, Rene Wise, Silent Servant, Alarico and UFO95 to unreleased gems by Filippo Scorcucchi - alongside Function’s own productions, edits and textures. The result is a hypnotic, high-pressure session built for the club’s inner core, designed for maximum immersion and intensity.

Now operating out of Edinburgh, the former Underground Resistance member - forever associated with the timeless classic ‘Knights of the Jaguar’ - has laid the foundation to a ceaselessly compelling body of work, including key releases on Ostgut Ton, Delsin and his own imprint, R3. Championing a sound most entrancingly dynamic, largely informed by groove, jazz and Latin percussions, Rolando graces us with a mix that combines the finest of his signature mystic-imbued vision and sixth sense for crafting some of the most memorable club experiences to be had. Tapping in his love for polyamorous Detroit techno and house combinations, mostly leaning into the more soulful side of his hometown’s heritage rather than the industrial edge, Rolando embarks us on a ride across shape-shifting technoid boogie reliefs and further uncharted routes. It’s back to the strange, mind-expanding world of Zenaari with an episode from Moroccan techno master Chami. Leaving his homeland for France was an epiphany, Lyon the place where his passion for beats kicked-off. Since then, he’s relocated to Berlin and become synonymous with a clean, rhythmic and mentally-focused sound played exclusively on vinyl. It’s raw and unforgiving techno primed for body and soul, Berlin to the letter and a constant dialogue with the city’s ever-changing zeitgeist. Foregrounding burgeoning talents through his and Olivia Mendez’s DIG Curated, playing as half of Face 2 Face with DJ peer OPH, and key figure in Berlin-based collective Minijob (whose calling is in organising underground raves in and around the city), Chami’s plate is more than full. But it’s passion for sound that drives him, visceral basslines his bread and butter. Breaking with the expected, there’s a further facet to his sound, one that occupies the focus of this next Zenaari number: jazz. Not quite as far as it might superficially seem, Chami’s feeling for rhythm and knack for progressively stacked up moods translates flawlessly, but if it helps there’s a few warped percussions to move things along. This is an expert fusion of his musical universe, a Podcast that probes the possibilities offered by the superimposition of these two sonic languages and develops something new in response. Two sides of a coin: Chami’s slamming beats and soothing jazz are a window onto the spectrum of his talents, 68 minutes of compelling sounds from a Berlin mainstay.

With a meticulous vision and fierce determination, Thoms Traxx is an artist moving at the pinnacle of the Dutch techno scene. His intelligent and resourceful approach to his craft gained him a well-respected name in his city of birth, Amsterdam, where he played at places like De School, Radion, Awakenings, and Lofi. Over the course of the years, he became a critical figure of the Orphic rave organisation, curating events and fostering a close-tied community at the forefront of the city's underground movement. Both as an artist and a personality, he has been captivating dancers, bookers, and music professionals across both established and new generations. Moved by curiosity and vigour, Thoms Traxx is an ever-evolving force that can’t be missed out on.
