Dub Explorations 085 is here and we are extremely proud to present our latest guest and one of the hardest working DJ's and Producers in the game - OHM

On the forefront of the techno scene in northern Europe for nearly 25 years, 
Icelandic's producer and DJ Ohm, 
has continued to stay true to the spirit of techno. 
Thru the 1990s, Ohm learned a deep foundation of the growing worldwide techno surge that by 1999, 
he felt he was creative and eager enough to start writing his own music. 
Success came quickly with his debut; a collaboration with fellow Icelandic legend Exos on Force Inc records. 
This led to over 20 releases since on standout labels like Thule records, Rawax, Kontakt, Solid Groove., Taped Artifact, Ranges, Vade mecum , 
Vuo records and AE Recordings, and AE recordings Ltd, which he co-ran with Octal Industries and Thor from Thule Records.
A chance meeting in a Berlin records store with Andrey Puskarev and Pola led to releasing some music on the acclaimed All In Records and their sublabel Nilla. Shortly after, 
a release on Andrey's own label Luck of Access with Octal Industries followed. 
Now Copenhagen based, his DJ career is equally impressive having been a regular guest at the hottest spot in his area, Culture Box. 
In the past, gigs at Germany's Tresor along with various places all around Europe to clubs back home in Iceland, 
Ohm's style of DJing is the culmination of over 30 years in the techno scene. Being a beloved personality in the scene, 
Recently, Ohm has started his own imprint, OHM Series. 
This label focuses on having releases that feature a mixture of well-beloved veterans and some vibrant new names pushing techno's sonic boundaries.
Highlighting this balance is a prime example where his techno integrity is the cornerstone of its operation. 
He's blending tried and true techno sounds with techno's next visionaries which we can all agree that is a worthwhile endeavor for the direction. 
Ohm also runs two shows on Timeline music online platform. 
One showcases some of the best Danish artists for the last 2 years and a second show sees him playing the latest promo's he receives from industry connections and friends. 
So, what does the future hold for Ohm? More of it all in short. More new Ohm music productions and remixes.

We return to the podcast after a small break to welcome 2024 with a monster studio mix from long time friends and associates of the shop, Quadrant Soundscape (Wilson Logan & Tommy Harrison)

If you've got a remote interest in anything dub techno and reside in the Manchester area your guna have a good idea about this prolific duo. Both have been long time customers of the record shop, and have been honing there craft for many years now. It's also been super rewarding seeing them achieve so much with there club night 'Dub Explorations' which is held at Eastern Bloc on the regular. Expect the highest quality sub frequency rhythms to get lost in, (perfect for these winter evenings) get a good look at the tracklisting to, some real peaches tucked within this 3 hour journey.

The 7th instalment of our In:Focus Series places the spotlight on a very specific point in time - The Early Deepchord records years.

In the late 1990s the Deepchord record label was co-founded by Rod Modell & Mike Schommer in Detroit, Michigan. After just four years and achieving far more success than initially anticipated, DeepChord Records wound down operations. For this In Focus we want to concentrate specifically on the work that Rod and Mike did before they disbanded.

Across the Dub Techno scene the name Deepchord carries the highest of gravitas. Elite level quality, and considered by many to be, alongside Basic Channel, the blueprint of the genre.

So much has been written about Deepchord over the years, and we're not here to repeat what's been said (you can check out a great interview with Mike from a few years ago here - inn8.net/interview-with-mike-schommer-deepchord/ ), we're here to celebrate the music and we hope that through this session we have done that.

We open our series with an artist we have been huge fans of for well over a decade - Luke Hess.

Born in 1980 in Metro Detroit and subject to the city's mid-90's warehouse parties, Luke Hess has harnessed a deep appreciation for electronic music and the expression of the underground movement.  His background in mathematics and engineering has given him a scientific approach to the dance-floor, using frequencies, tones, and soundscapes to transform surroundings and mood.

This incredible mix was recorded just a few weeks ago at Kenneth Christiansens "Dub Nation" event at About Blank, Berlin. Luke showcases his skills throughout, with tight, precise blends that he's made his signature. We are truly honoured to have one of our favourite ever artists open this series.

The 8th instalment of our In:Focus Series goes back to where it all began. The Originators, the start of the sound we all love - Its Mark & Moritz, it's Basic Channel. 

There’s not a lot we can write that hasn’t already been written about this legendary duo and record label. Its quite hard to fathom how much innovation and quality came out of Berlin in such a small space of time, but over the course of 2/3 years Mark and Moritz invented a genre and wrote there names into the history books.   

What we have presented here isn’t a complete body of their work but it covers the majority of their output , with most of the ‘Big Hitters’ featured. We Chose to focus specifically on the releases as Basic Channel / Cyrus / Quadrant, however there is much more to explore, with their output as Maurizio, Rhythm&Sound, Round One - Five. 

Many have tried imitating, none have succeeded. This is Basic Channel

Artist: Federsen [Alt Dub / Fifth Interval / Lempuyang / Greyscale]

Our fourth journey around the sonic sphere is captained by one of our favourite producers and Dj's , based in San Francisco but originating from Scotland, we are proud to present one of the most consistent and hard working producers in the game , It's Federsen.

Federsen, real name Chris Kelly, has been releasing music for the last 15 years and he has become a true master of Dub infused minimalism. He has crafted and moulded his own sound with every release he puts out. You know when you hear a Federsen track. Solid kicks and baselines, combined with beautiful sprinklings of crisp, rich percussion and a warm analog feel, but most importantly … Groove.   

His deep, dubby, and groovy records have seen releases on the likes of ETUI, Avant Roots, Lempuyang, Mixcult, Modernism, Ohm Series, Greyscale. All The big hitters, as well as his own label, Fifth Interval. 

  His most recent project is his new Label Alt Dub. With 2 releases now under his belt the future looks great for the label. The first release, a split EP with Hidden Sequence is one that been on heavy rotation in the Dub Explorations studio. For the second release he teams up with the legendary Stephen Hitchell aka Cv313 in a true meeting of Detroit and San Fran. Both artists rework each others tracks and the results are clear for all to hear.   

We are honoured to be able to host Chris on our platform again and look forward to seeing where he goes next and what’s to come from Alt Dub.

Artist: Giacomo Pellegrino [Detroit Side / Greyscale / Ohm Series / Mixcult / spclnch / Ausblick]

We are proud to present another musical frontier. This time we turn our attention to the Italian Dj, producer and head of the Detroit Side Label - Giacomo Pellegrino.   

Giacomo began his musical journey aged 14 when he learned how to DJ. Growing up he listened to a lot of disco and funk and all kinds of 70s and 80s dance music. He often arranged shows and sets for his friends until he was old enough to play at clubs. As his music knowledge and tastes developed he eventually moved into the realms of House and Techno.  

  In much the same way as ourselves, Giacomo has a huge affinity for all things Detroit and in particular , Detroit Techno. Hence the birth of his own label - Detroit Side. A Vinyl only label which he carefully curates and is home to the likes of Delano Smith, Franck Roger, Nick Beringer, S.A.M and of course Giacomo Himself.   

As a producer , Giacomo is someone we’ve been big fans of since we discovered his music, which features regularly in our mixes and radio shows. Through his productions, which are almost solely created using a variety of hardware, he showcases his extensive abilities and talents, often taking inspiration from nature as well has things from his everyday life.

For this Frontier mix, Giacomo has presented a 60 minute journey, which begin with some really deep atmospheric sounds before teasing in some super deep pulsing kicks. As the mix develops he continues to drop in ambient moments, followed by more deep rhythms and sounds.   

We are honoured to be able to host an artist like Giacomo on our platform and we look forward to seeing how his career progresses in the coming years.

Artist: The Open Circle [Greyscale / Crossfade Sounds/ Axaminer / OHM Series / ODrex]

Our 17th Frontier journey comes from Belgian producer Geert Thirry better known as - The Open Circle. We have been big fans of The Open Circle since we discovered his music a few years ago. He is an incredible producer and very versatile artist, who’s music can span from deep ambient soundscapes, to low slung chuggy dub techno all the way up to full dance floor fist pumping Techno. His production is mostly done using a Modular synthesizer and some other hardware. Then Layered textures and evolving rhythms are built to define the signature style with analog warmth and hypnotic depth.  

Geert has been producing music for many years, His first EP was actually released back in 2003 on the UK label ” Lost Language “as a double vinyl. Released under the alias Karada the release was more in the melodic Techno sphere. Since then his style and sound has developed into the deep Dub Techno he is known for today. His productions have been gathering more and more acclaim with his recent release on the legendary Greyscale placing him firmly towards to the top echelons of the Dub Techno world. 

We are honoured to be able to welcome Geert to the Dub Explorations and Frontier family and look forward to hearing his future productions.

The 14th destination on our journey across the musical galaxy takes us to the planet under the control of Anton Lanski. Hailing from Izhevsk, Russia, Anton is an artist we’ve been huge fans of for many years. An Artist that has featured on our shows and mixes for almost as long as we’ve been doing them. He is truly an artist with a unique sound that has been carved out over many years at the top of the game. His productions are deep, Dubby and atmospheric.   

With such a wealth of musical talent at his fingertips, Anton is  able to showcase is talents across multiple fields. Under his Gespleu alias he has releases slow-mo/chill/house records. He is also part of an electonic-pop/ambient band  called Cetranger.

For Our 16th trip around the musical cosmos we welcome to the controls a German artist who we have been a fan of for some time. With Releases on some of the top dub techno labels including , Greyscale, OHM Series and Vuo Records, we are proud to be able to host this mix from Armin Bender.

Armin is an artist who has been involved in the dub techno scene for 30 years, he is a passionate Vinyl collector, DJ and producer. An understated artist who goes about his work in a quiet and professional manner. 

This is summed up in his short but sweet biography - 

"Mind rave, goose bumps, deepness, groove, a smile on the face. Thats what its all about... No more words necessary, no history, no credits, no stereotypes, just the music that I love, preferably on vinyl... Peace!"

We thank Armin for his contribution to the series, its another fantastic mix filled some some audible delights including tracks from Dana Ruh, Pablo Bolivar, Matt & Mark Thibideau as well as the beautiful early track by DJ Sandwich on OGE White. They also run a series of live events at the famous Eastern Bloc Records. The Dub Explorations Series itself has well surpassed 130 shows, all at least 3 hours in length which is an insight into the dedication they have for hunting underground Dub Techno and Deeper Detroit Tunes to showcase and promote. They have also increased their output with 2 new mix series'. Firstly, 'The Quadrasphere' where many genres are showcased by some very talented artists, and 'The Frontier', which is an invite only mix show.

A few words from Andy:
"We don't get the benefits of a regular rub down as we used to, but when it happens, it remains a bit of a treat. The chaos of the early discogs forums introduced us over 20 years ago but also because we shared a love of proper deep music and the high life. We've done some Estimulo Shows, SUNK parties (with Chris) and many lost all nighters together before trajectories diverged. This one was a recent Saturday night, just winging it whilst quaffing notable Italian Reds. Its mildly amusing to me (Andy) that this recording leans into Dub Techno, a genre for which Truly has peculiar aversion to… and yet we are left feeling for dubby chords, swirling delays, some elegiac melodies and our passion for the proper tunage......one more rider?"

Artist: Andy Green [Verdant Recordings / Vertex ]

Auditory journey number 18 to the musical Frontier is piloted by our good friend and musical aficionado , Verdant Recordings chief groundsman - Andy Green.   

Andy has already featured on one Dub Explorations show and two different Quadrasphere mixes. As well as playing live for us at our Eastern Bloc events,  so we thought it was due time he stepped up and presented his Frontier.

  As far as musical compatibility goes, Andy aligns with ourselves as well as anybody we know. His depth of knowledge in terms of the deeper shades of house and Techno is second to none. A long time collector and even longer time raver, he has spent years really refining his tastes and it shows across all of his musical output. Everything he touches turns to Green (GOLD). He has a huge variety of mixes and videos on his socials  but all of them are done with a touch of class. Nothing ever feels hurried out of place, instead his contributions to this scene of ours and measured and well thought out.

  In terms of his label - Verdant, again it’s a classy affair. From the first release back in 2016, through to the most recent, every EP is packed with musical goodness. Very much a case of all killer no filler. Combined with constantly interesting and evolving Artworks, it’s a match made in heaven.   

As for this submission to the Frontier, Andy once again produces the goods. Just over two hours of all realms of deepness, touching on house techno and every obscurity in-between.   

We are blessed to be able to call Andy our friend and thank him for all of our collaborations over the years, here’s to many more.

For our 9th mix of the series we turn the spotlight to one of our favourite labels of the last few years, Australia's finest - Primary [colours]

Primary Colours was founded in a pub over an IPA in 2012 (The Perfect place to form a label, in our opinion) and is the brainchild of Lance Harrison and Mark Baumann, aka Echo Inspectors. 

Over the last few years the label has gone from strength to strength and really carved out a unique sound amongst the Deep and Dub Techno Community. They showcase some of the top artists from around as well as bringing to the fore some of Australia's best talents.

Its time for another Quadrasphere and once again, its another very special one. We are extremely blessed to welcome Cousin Silas to our series, and he does not disappoint. He has carefully crafted a mix of all his own material, including some edits made exclusively for us and his mix. Cousin Silas has been producing music, both electronically and acoustically for a very long time, and he also is one of the biggest champions of other producers, inspiring many collaborations and projects, primarily through his Cousin Silas Emporium. "Not sure if some of the edits could indeed be classed as exclusives, in truth they have been created just for this mix, so??? A Sprig Of Rowen, Anemoa 2-1, and Emporium Drone 018 haven't been released yet, so depending on when this mix sees the light of day, that may well have changed, but as of creating this, it's true that they are unreleased!
The times are as close as dammit, have to be honest I've never been able to work out how to do time stamps, but like I say, the times in the list above are close.

We are very happy to bring you another wonderful Quadrasphere mix, and this time we head to South Africa for a long overdue hook up with the amazing and talented Wade Watts.
Wade Watts is widely known for his work in the Dub Techno and Electronica/Ambient scene. He has many releases world wide and has recently released an absolutely beautiful piece of vinyl on Lempuyang Records! 
Even though he has been dominating the scene for a long time now, its fair to say the best is yet to come as he goes from strength to strength. 
His music features heavily in our Dub Explorations shows, and over the years, we have become blessed to call him our friend!

We return with another very special Quadrasphere, and we welcome back our very own Wilson donning his Scavenger alias as he puts together a deep and leftfield ambient mix. With any mix that's ambient leaning, the definition of that ambience can vary from artist to artist and so its always great to experience one that has this level of creativity and originality. As always, you can hear the Quadrant Soundscape energy here, and although most of this mix includes records that you may not yet have heard played on Dub Explorations or the many mixes Wilson has put out there, they certainly would be right at home. This mix is all vinyl, and when reading his thoughts on the creation of this mix, we hope you feel like you're right there with him as he was executing it in the very classy way he has. 

Here are a few words from Scavenger

"This is a mix that I've been wanting to record for probably 6 months. It's something I started thinking about when I was re-ordering my records into the new studio. I came across a little stack of ambient oddities and after having a listen through ideas started to swirl. Some of these records have been on my shelves for 10 years or more without ever really being used in any tangible form and so I decided they needed to see the light of day.

In a way they reflect the sort of things I enjoy listening to at home, usually when it's dark and rainy, certainly moody. There's a nice mix of ambient, down-tempo, roots, Dub and even some spoken word.

I really tried to create an atmosphere through playing these records, some are pitched up , some pitched down, and some are at completely the wrong speed (or the right speed, depending on how you look at it). There's some lovely cracks and pops throughout that I feel only add to the warmth of the mix, as well as being part and parcel of playing vinyl.

This is definitely one to kick back and get horizontal to. Headphones or speakers turned up, and drift away.

The next mix in theQuadrasphere series comes from Dutch DJ and record collector - Julius. We have been aware of Julius' movements In the scene for a few years now with mixes across the big hitters of the podcast world. We were particularly impressed by his offering to our friends over at Stately Records, and so when offer the chance to release a mix of his we jumped.

Here are a few words from Julius - 

" This mix was recording last month during ADE, and contains a few records I bought at ‘Killacutz’. I wanted to make a recording that was quite easy-going but as the mix developed it ended up quite powerful. The mix is mostly vinyl only but doe contain a few digital tracks as well. It begins with some dubby tunes and moves into a few minimal tracks before ending with some beautiful Dub Techno. I tried to use a lot of tracks with heavy baselines and punchy kicks.  "

As we venture into the 19th edition of The Frontier we are excited to welcome an Artist and label owner that we’ve been fans of for a long time - The Belfast-based DJ and founder of Computer Controlled Records - Nez 

Over the past 2 decades, he’s carved out a distinct voice in the underground scene, both as a selector and as a curator, driven by a deep respect for the roots of electronic music and a hunger for its future possibilities. 

Known for intense, tightly crafted sets, Nez brings an uncompromising approach to the dancefloor. His selections speak to years spent digging, listening, and understanding how music moves people physically and emotionally. There's a clarity of intent in his sets: no gimmicks, no trend-chasing, just pure, high-voltage energy built for dark rooms and late hours.

Through Computer Controlled Records, he’s released music from like-minded artists who share a passion for hardware-driven sound and DIY ethos. The label has become a trusted outlet for heads seeking depth and authenticity, reflecting Nez’s commitment to keeping the underground alive and vital.

Outside the booth and studio, Nez remains active in the Belfast scene, supporting local talent, hosting events, and helping build a space where music can thrive on its own terms. Whether he’s playing to a packed club or championing a new artist, the goal stays the same: to serve the music and the people who live for it.

For his Frontier mix Nez has delivered an hour and 40 minutes of his usual full throttle style, heads down, dance-floor orientated pumpers. This is definitely one that will require some dancing shoes.

 As the year comes to a close and we move deeper into the depths of winter, we are honoured to be able to release this mix from an artist who’s work seems to be the perfect soundtrack for these cold dark stormy days. In at number 20 in the frontier series we welcome the incredibly talented Icelandic producer - Waage.  

 In a scene that can sometimes be saturated in similar sounds, Waage is an artist that has truly carved out his own sound. Always deep and uncompromising , always unique. Waage tracks are easily identifiable but rarely imitated well. 

  For his Frontier mix Waage has presented an hour of almost fully unreleased music. Which is an absolute privilege for us to be able to share. The mix is packed with beautiful sequences and atmospherics , its very Waage, and its very US!  

This will be one to play again and again.

   We want to thank Kristjan for this epic contribution to the series and we cant wait to get our hands on more of his music.

We are blessed to be able release this final frontier mix of 2025, expertly crafted and mixed by the bossman of one of our favourite labels, Dutch based - Stately Records.

From its beginning is 2020, Stately Records have been putting out music that we've not been able to take out of our record bags. Touching on all thing Deep, Dubby and Minimal, with a solid groove. They are known for their high calibre of output. Less is definitely more. The label has featured the music of some of our favourite producers such as Anton Kubrikov, Dubtommy, Nicolas Barnes, Alessandro Crimi, Philipp Preibe and Federsen.

For this Frontier mix Frederik has turned in a 2 hour masterclass in deep sonics.  Floating through the sounds you would expect to hear from the man behind such a classy label. Hes even dropped in some unreleased Stately goodies so keep an ear out for them.

Quadrant Soundscape is the meeting of two minds. Tommy Harrison aka Asphalt Layer & Wilson Logan aka Scavenger. The pair have been playing together since 2014 with each one bringing their own particular sound to the project. Known best for their long running radio show Dub Explorations, the pair play some of the best in underground Dub Techno, electro, downbeat and ambient sounds. When it comes to their DJ sets you can expect them to be diving between their records, CDJ’s and Ableton, with the goal of creating an immersive deep sound, with rolling baselines and sprinklings of sci-fi ambience. Playing back to back they push each other with every record they play, with the next selection often being picked on the fly, to create some truly unique sets. Inspired by the pioneers of the past, their sound is heavily influenced by German Dub Techno, Detroit Techno and UK Bass.

Individually, Tommy produces music as Asphalt Layer. His deep, electronic and dubby sound being heard on multiple record labels worldwide. Incorporating analog machines and field recordings to generate the many noises he uses in his productions, along with that 90's Jungle influence, his sound is very recognizable.

And Wilson has begun a new alias, Scavenger, where he dives deep into the murky, experimental and dark, trippy techno world to produce very unique mixes. This alias allows Wilson to experiment more with his records and sound, often performing in a dark room on 4 decks alone.

With a rich history of playing records and putting parties on in Manchester, hosting the likes of Remco Beekwilder, Ambivalent, Radioactiveman, Detroit Techno Militia, Mark Archer, Jerome Hill, El Choop, ODrex Records and Conforce, the boys intend to keep pushing that vibe they believe in and love.
