Truth be told, the Deadbeats aren't much to write home about. Their sample-and-cycle pseudo downtempo comes across as a "chilled" take on Armand Van Helden's _Sampleslaya_ That is, the more obnoxious bits of hip hop looped ad nauseum. "Got It Goin' On" fits this mold well, it's not terribly good, not terribly interesting, and forgotten very quickly. That is, except for the Aim mix, which is an absolute corker. It manages to be groovy, sexy, uplifting and poppy, without sounding cheesy or contrived. The female vox are processed just right and sends shivers down one's spine. A similar effect turns the formally-obnoxious male rap into a blissful counterpart. The instrumental part of the track could stand quite well on its own, but blends the whole song into a perfect bit of downtempo pop. When compared to the uninspiring original, it is truly amazing just how much funk, soul and emotion is present in the Aim mix. Definitely on my list of top ten chillout tracks.

UPDATE: The winners of the DJ Shadow remix contest have been announced! I'm not one of them, but it was great to hear the ones that shadow picked. So glad Archive's Waltz version was in the ranks, played that on my KCRW show on Wednesday. I'm not bummed one bit, everyone who Shadow picked killed it in their own way, and since I only set out to make what I consider to be a beautiful song... I feel successful in that. This song is the result of a spontaneous session which happened in February 2017 in Sofia/Bulgaria at the recording studio of Koka Mass Jazz.. Starting from scratch and adding instrument by instrument 'Back To Vienna' turned fast into a hommage to the Vienna School sound of the early 2000s.
All recordings were done in one afternoon and some arranging and post-production later in March.
