Deep Dub / Old School Dubstep - part 2

Leila Youssefi, DJ and visual artist, sat down with Mackenzie Fell, one of the organizers of Femme Sessions and Creative Directors of SubSessions Arts and Music Collective, to answer a few questions about her craft, her journey as an artist, how she felt being asked to contribute to Femme Sessions, and what she thinks SubSessions can do to create a more inclusive space. Artist Bio:

Leila Youssefi is an LA-based visual artist and DJ currently working under the moniker “@lvlupkid”. Approaching music as narrative, her sound often interlays personal audio recordings with a wide variety of genres spanning downtempo jazz to hip hop to breakbeat. Her Femme Sessions mix takes this approach in breaching the topic of quarantine and all of its nuanced sensations. As a team player of Space Milk collective, Leila cares to foster inclusive community spaces where all feel comfortable to tune in, switch off, and have a good-old-fashion boogie with one another.

The story behind her Guest Mix ~

"Six months into the Covid-19 lockdown, I did an experimental livestream exploring the millennial desire to “escape” - escape quarantine, escape the worrying state of the world, escape presence. Now that another 6 months have passed, the state of the pandemic only recently looking up, I’m more interested in what it means to turn inward and be present in this bizarre space. 

This mix is a reflection on our #stayathome lives;  full of fear, frustration, relaxation, potato chips, confusion, antagonizing brain-loops, cabin-fever, isolation, the eclipse of the bra & the dawn of the sweats, America’s Next Top Model binges, and of course - the strange sensation of feeling like you should be doing something productive with all the xtra time, but just not being able to 🙃

After many moments of struggle and many moments of joy, I realize that lockdown isn’t innately bad. It just is. For the sake of keeping others & ourselves healthy, we are still, even one year later, here. Whether it be the overlap of my family members simultaneously taking meetings from home, continuously rewatching scenes from movies for the odd stability they provide in a less than static world, or the dead-end unemployment line (if you know, you know lol) - it is my current reality. In conversation with this, please enjoy some jazz, feel-good dub, sad piano, and select home-bound recordings as a soundtrack to this wormhole of a moment in time."

His sets walk through the styles, from commercial to barely known, from Pop EDM to hybrid and experimental, with the purpose of breaking concepts and joining music styles together. In an unstoppable search for new influences, he has deep roots in trap and dubstep, adding a little bit of future beats, footwork and other unlabeled styles, but always looking forward for the low frequences.
