The album, the full-length, the long player; an artist’s showcase, a look into one’s creative mind, his deepest secrets, fears, failures, and triumphs.

Generally, an album serves one of two functions. The first being a club-centric compilation that feels a lot like listening to 6 EPs one after another resulting only in the reassurance that yes, this artist can still satisfy a dance floor. The second works as a genuine exposé of an artist’s creativity, music knowledge, and intelligence, but most of all reminds us that there is a human behind the music; a human that understands not all Techno should be enjoyed under the shade of a Funktion One. 

“Shortcake Strategy” is Falko Brocksieper’s third full length and it exemplifies the ladder. Though the introduction might feel like a familiar place in between synthesizers and kick drums, it’s merely a beginning; not at an indication of what is to follow. Within seconds of hearing “Avoid”, it doesn’t take long to acknowledge this is something truly different.
“Heavy Day”, Brocksieper’s last album was released in 2008 on his own Sub-Static imprint. It was, like all of the releases before, high quality Tech-House. It contained moments of song-like beauty, but nonetheless remained connected to a minimalistic approach.

Five years later, Falko’s growth is clear. In “Shortcake Strategy”, fairytale-like melodies are backed with thought provoking harmonies that pave the way for an explicitly visual experience. We have been introduced to a new face of the Berlin-based producer. Shortcake is a simple recipe. It doesn’t take a lot of planning or much thought or attention when preparing it, and in the end, it will be light, fluffy, sweet, and perfectly satisfying. Falko might say the same about his approach to the creation of  “Shortcake Strategy”, yet the end product sees his most dynamic and emotional productions to date, leaving us with the feeling that this comes from a strategy that requires far more thought, and is far more complicated than that of a sugary dessert.

On the heels of the success of Tin Man’s - S_MPL_HOUSE EP Shaddock is proud to welcome another true master for the label’s fifth release: J.T.C.

Originally produced for Tim Sweeny’s ‘Beats in Space’ radio show the title track was heard in one of J.T.C’s DJ sets during a night out in Berlin and was signed to Shaddock on the spot. Heavy on the synths with a stirring bass-line and a driving 808, ‘Beats In Space’ is destined to shake-up every dance-floor.

Stepping up for his first ever remix duty is no other than Madteo of Meakusma, Workshop or Joy Orbison’s Hinge Finger fame, who added his unique signature of twisted, hypnotic left-field house, aptly titling his re-work 'Mad in Space’.

On the flip J.T.C showcases his more melodic side as well as his versatility as a producer. ‘The First Night Cycle’, feat. Ellis Monk is a metabolic track clocking in at eight minutes developing over time, all the while under-laid with James T. Cotton’s ceaseless heavy grooves.

‘Love Canopy And Vessels’ finishes this little gem in the best Detroit/ Chicago house fashion.

Following up his recently-released remixes of Scuba's single 'The Hope' on Hotflush, Plangent Records boss Recondite returns to the label, this time with a solo 12" titled DRGN / Wist 365. Recalling some of the moodiest moments from 'On Acid', his recent LP devoted to the sounds of the 303, this debut shows Recondite stay true to his somber and tension-inducing roots.

'DRGN', the sonic equivalent to traversing a bleak end-of-times landscape, is a journey replete with a relentless, melodic sub-bass and vibrating synth; on the flip Recondite gives the 9-minute long 'Wist 365' a drum workout, resulting in a progressive, menacing groove, awash with wind chimes and 808 claps.

The Hypercolour train picks up yet more steam with their next release, a double A side from Maxxi Soundsystem Featuring Name One on vocal duties and legendary sonic inventor Matthew Herbert in the remix role. Brighton based beatsmith Maxxi Soundsystem has risen to the top of the pile in recent months with heartfelt jams for Needwant and Futureboogie all fusing uplifting melodies with melancholic beats. 

And it’s a similar MO on this unassumingly anthemic new track, ‘Regrets We Have No Use For.’ Characterised by a wavy, frayed synth line that grows louder then quieter in the mix, soft shakers bring some wiggle whilst the breathy voice of Name One floats up above. It’s charming and sultry, slowly working its way under your skin at the same time as making you dance all under pinned by a monstrous, all consuming and grumbling bass line that makes your chest throb and head bob. 

Found sound innovator and general all round music chief Matthew Herbert goes for a much less soupy sound on his remix. The beats here are less smooth and more splintered, propping up the now distant, filtered vocal that drifts in and out of focus. Of course, the background synth are now much more unhinged and trippy in Herbert’s hands, with the resulting effect one suited to darkened back rooms in the dead of night. 

As ever, an unpredictable release from Hypercolour but that sounds as unique as anything the label has offered up in the past.
