Rituals for Resistance and Resilience: Creating Your Own Rituals

This passage in Matthew has some pretty harsh words about God separating out the sheep from the goats, and damning the latter to eternal fire. But&nbsp;who exactly are the goats? And what does one do to end up there? You may have been told that people who haven't accepted Jesus are the ones damned to hell, but this passage gives a very different explanation. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left. Then the king will say to those at his right hand, ‘Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me,&nbsp; was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? Your oppression is not your fault - Isaiah 64:1-9

John wore clothes made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist. He ate locusts and wild honey. He announced, “One stronger than I am is coming after me. I’m not even worthy to bend over and loosen the strap of his sandals. I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

John the Baptist & Building on Queer Activism - Mark 1:1-8

This passage from Isaiah will become the opening thesis of Jesus's ministry (as told in Luke 4). In it, we get a sense of God's priorities (and what will become the priorities of Jesus as well). This is the work that we're called to be part of. [powerpress] Isaiah 61:1-4  The Lord God’s spirit is upon me, &nbsp; &nbsp;because the Lord has anointed me. He has sent me &nbsp; &nbsp; to bring good news to the poor, &nbsp; &nbsp; to bind up the brokenhearted, &nbsp; &nbsp; to proclaim release for captives, &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; and liberation for prisoners, &nbsp; &nbsp; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; and a day of vindication for our God, &nbsp; &nbsp; to comfort all who mourn, &nbsp; &nbsp; to provide for Zion’s mourners, &nbsp; &nbsp; to give them a crown in place of ashes, &nbsp; &nbsp; oil of joy in place of mourning, &nbsp; &nbsp; a mantle of praise in place of discouragement. They will be called Oaks of Righteousness, &nbsp; &nbsp; planted by the Lord to glorify himself. They will rebuild the ancient ruins; &nbsp; &nbsp; they will restore formerly deserted places; &nbsp; &nbsp; they will renew ruined cities, &nbsp; &nbsp; places deserted in generations past.

This is God's good news - Isaiah 61:1-4

New Year, New You

Brian and Fr. Shay experience this passage in two different ways — and that's ok! For some, this passage is comforting and for others this is creepy and overbearing. It's a passage that's been used against queer and trans people but also maybe has a poetic message that can connect you with King David and resonate with you. Psalm 139 1-6; 13-18  Lord, you have examined me. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;You know me. You know when I sit down and when I stand up. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Even from far away, you comprehend my plans. You study my traveling and resting. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;You are thoroughly familiar with all my ways. There isn’t a word on my tongue,&nbsp;Lord, &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;that you don’t already know completely. You surround me—front and back. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;You put your hand on me. That kind of knowledge is too much for me; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;it’s so high above me that I can’t fathom it. You are the one who created my innermost parts; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;you knit me together while I was still in my mother’s womb. You knit me together - Psalm 139

The Gospel of Mark — the earliest written of the gospels — jumps right into the action with the arrest of John the Baptist and the start of Jesus's public ministry. He calls his first disciples and asks them to change their heart, change their life, and trust the good news. What did that mean for them and what does it mean for us? [powerpress] In this episode, we reference Jesus describing his "good news" in Luke 4. Here's some more on that. Mark 1:14-20  After John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee announcing God’s good news, saying, “Now is the time! Here comes God’s kingdom! Change your hearts and lives, and trust this good news!” As Jesus passed alongside the Galilee Sea, he saw two brothers, Simon and Andrew, throwing fishing nets into the sea, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” he said, “and I’ll show you how to fish for people.” Right away, they left their nets and followed him. After going a little farther, he saw James and John, Zebedee’s sons, in their boat repairing the fishing nets. At that very moment he called them. They followed him, leaving their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired workers.
