Everything Worth Mentioning — the second album from Oakland/San Francisco hip-hop duo Meanest Man Contest — comes almost exactly a decade after the group's debut. Following Merit, MMC's 2003 LP release on Plug Research, Noah Blumberg and Eric Steuer ditched the album format, instead dropping dozens of singles, EPs, videos, and remixes through indie labels around the world. The best of those songs (plus a handful of new ones) make up Everything Worth Mentioning, a record influenced by '70s singer-songwriters, '80s pop, '90s indie rock, and hip-hop from across the timeline.

Started as a bedroom recording project in a ramshackle apartment in Santa Barbara, Meanest Man Contest drew influence from its record-digging road trips to thrift stores, garage sales, and dank, creepy basements all over California. MMC's early tracks were typified by dusty drum samples and chopped-up guitars covered in a layer of ambient sound. Over time, the duo's music evolved into a unique blend of hip-hop balladry, synth-pop, and electronic atmospherics.

“Butterfly Case” is Cuushe’s brand new breath-taking 2nd full length album, coming four years after her beautiful debut “Red Rocket Telepathy” and the subsequent “Girl You Know That I Am Here But The Dream” EP.

While Cuushe’s debut album put more focus on field recordings and found sounds, in “Butterfly Case”, you can see her moving graciously from her dreams into reality, expressing herself with delicate analog tape, distorted synths, drum machines, looped guitars and her signature feathery vocals. This wonderful album is co-produced by flau label mastermind aus, with Geskia at the mastering helm. These astonishing new songs allow us see a new vision, an imagination from Cuushe that we’ve never seen before.

The balearic guitar-house track “I Love You”, which is one of the most popular tracks from the album, has already been receiving raving reviews from the press both in Japan and overseas, while the ambient-ish R&B take in “Hanabi” is a wonderful reminiscent of Cocteau Twins & early 4AD meet soul music. Cuushe’s uniquely beautiful voice, and the delicately beat-driven music that was masterfully produced in “Butterfly Case”, has undoubtedly unfolded a new exciting dimension in dream pop music.

Minneapolis’ Bass United Recordings teams up with local three-piece Estate for a superb new single of funk laden electronic pop backed with remixes from Dirty McKenzie, DCUP and Sloslylove… Minneapolis three piece Estate have been producing musical electronic gems for the last seven years, taking their sound on the road with the likes of Yelle, Ellie Goulding and Gigamesh and releasing three critically acclaimed albums and a host of singles. The trio are heavily influenced by an array of sounds with obvious links to 70’s and 80’s funk, soul, electro and new wave, as well as modern house and nudisco; in their own words they simply look to “make feel good music that is at home on the dancefloor or in the bedroom”. For their latest single Estate team up once again with the Bass United Recordings label, an imprint that has been pushing outstanding eclectic and electric music for the last decade. The single kicks off with the ‘Official’ version of ‘Slipstream’ a catchy and uplifting slice of disco pop that marries classic synths and rich bass with the bands distinctive vocals, quality stuff. The original version is followed by a remix from label boss Dirty McKenzie whose ‘Flutestream mix’ does what it says on the tin, delivering a delightful version that pulls together a retro 70’s disco B-line with funk guitar licks and a standout flute solo. The last of the ‘Slipstream’ mixes sees Australian producer DCUP turn in a chopped up electro influenced reworking that provides another outstanding alternative. The second ‘Official’ track comes in the shape of ‘Pressure’s On’ a soulful and laidback cut that shows Estate’s chilled side with it’s hypnotic vocoded vocals and heart stirring melodies. The original version is backed up with a mix from new US artist Sloslylove who drops a delightfully left of center reworking that utilizes fluid sounding drums and intense pads to provide a perfect soundbed for the vocal parts, sublime stuff. This is another winner from Estate and the ever excellent Bass United Recordings, enjoy!
