Slowdown

The meanings behind these pieces of music have been lost to time. The ideas and inspirations behind Input Lag may have been manifold. (It seems to contain nods to Game of Thrones and Eurythmics, but who knows…) One thing is known: the working title for this album was Drums Slower (or Slower Drums), and this one is defo slower, while other tracks on the album contain the drums. Here percussion comes in after the two minute mark, and the drums do remain slow for the remainder of the track. The title, Input Lag, might refer to that uncharacteristically slow tempo. Then again, it might just be a gaming idiom reference like so many of the track names on WV.

Input Lag

The closer. This one is a proper 4-minute track, made up of two parts (because the game can’t make songs this long). The track itself adheres to what perhaps is my intrinsic style of making music (with WWDIY): build around a theme for a while until it’s enough, then turn it into something else and see where it takes me. Repeat. 

I think I’m looking for the true form of an idea and then moving on. It’s cool when the idea lives on trough many different phases, a thing that happens to nice effect on this track.

There’s theme in this one which forms around 1:15 (that bass melody), which plays mostly intact until the third minute, hanging around in the background until it comes to the fore. It’s coupled with another motif at around 2:40, sticks particularly well, and reaches its True Form around the third minute. 3:02 is when it hits it’s stride with a particular two-bar (no-harmony) section. That’s it. There it is. (A mega simple riff.) I could repeat it ad infinitum. It’s really my favourite part. But instead of repeating it, there’s just one pure instance of that True Form. Let’s see where it takes us. There is also a cool part at 3:48, when there’s a proper turn, which eventually takes us back to the beginning of the track.

Collision Detection

It’s a concept track. Goes like this. Band enters studio. Starts the recording the track. Then at one point the bassist goes off completely on their own. The rest of the band hesitate and stop playing. Then the drummer and guitarist pick up on the bass player’s thing. Band finishes the take.

It’s some kind of showtune. Then there’s that one horn part that sounds like I Like to Move It. The second half is a lot of whistling and vocals.
