After a year’s break from releases while focussing on Quickfix Recordings and its roster, Lee Christian, iconic frontman for Smilex and The Prohibition Smokers’ Club stretches his multi-instrumentalist producer muscles on new solo single The Social Distance.

Never one to shy away from tricky topics, his forthcoming album Pandemoria’s Box is an account of the past few calamitous years (as if anyone sane wants to revisit them) and this single is the perfect flagship for both the sound a subject matter…
 
But just before anyone gets their angry tweeting finger at the ready, this single isn’t any riot-inducing, rebellious protest or call to arms, as some might assume, but a tongue-in-cheek (if that sounds infectious, that’s because it is) take on keeping to the advised restrictions while lusty during a lockdown. 

Did we mention Lee is an obsessive Prince fan? That might be more apparent after hearing some of the groovy U.S. DJ remixes exclusive to Bandcamp, while the single pulls the alt-rock and industrial vibes to the fore - mixing up some ‘Midnight Vultures’ era Beck and 90’s NIN vibes with a modern sound to intoxicating effect. Quickfix are delighted to welcome back Liv Luce (who was on our first ever release Caliber's Someday Now EP) for her debut solo material - Magpie is the first taste from her forthcoming EP which will showcase her piano playing as well as her already familiar Vocal and Bass talents - for now though it's a grungey guitar led political and philosophical protest song, ably backed by her spouse drummer Pat Holmberg (smilex, the rock of travolta, black nielsen). 'Live Your Life' blends 80's, early 90's Hacienda club sound with a rave era positive upbeat message to live your live and to be free (that's as relevant if not more so now) delivered with a soulful vocal and chilled harmonies certainly pushing the boundaries of electronic music.

For 'Vocation', Lee Christian's 6th solo record in 5 years, (working separately from his bands Smilex & The Prohibition Smokers' Club) rather than write, perform and produce everything as he has done so far, Lee decided to work with many talented producers (previous collaborators and brand new), focussing instead solely on lyrics, melodies and harmonies. 

Taking inspiration from David Bowie’ s departure from the shock rock glam of Ziggy and experimental explorations of the Thin White Duke, for the contemporary R&B sheen of Nile Rodgers produced classic Let’s Dance. The result is his most immediate collection of songs for a decade, a sprawling yet cohesive set, including Electronica, Dance, Hip Hop,  soul, RnB, Funk and more from over a dozen beat makers from around the world.

'Vocation' is overflowing with summery festival vibes, the result perhaps of road testing some of the material with his band The Prohibition Smokers’ Club, supporting Roachford and headlining stages and thrilling audiences at Truck, Cornbury and Wychwood festivals… and more!

Lee Christian - Live Your Life

When the track kicked off recent album 'Vocation', it was more of an upbeat dance pop statement of intent for that album and what it held in store. The music was made by teenage Ennio Morricone and Faithless inspired producer Cookiegemz so in keeping with her youthful energy, we recently asked teenage filmmaker Jules Hawking  to cook up a video for it. This in turn demanded a slight revision of the track, so Lee made a new slightly darker industrial flavoured mix. Placed in the context of the new video the song and lyric solidifies as more of a celebration of music itself and it’s benefits, especially when compared or contrasted with other pursuits and vices.Take a look at this promo video here: https://youtu.be/BAA5UlYVciI

Hailing from Exotic South-East London, Vocalist-bassist Tash Caesar makes grunge funk music. However, tragically born with a rare phobia of boxes, for health reasons her music can not be put into a box. 

She believes that "music should be many shapes, not to be looked at but to be experienced and never as pretentious as this sentence".

Her album 'The 13th' was one of our favourite releases of last year and here previous work with Quickfix acts Half Decent & Lee Christian has been wonderful, so we are very excited to have her as the inaugural artist for this Monthly Subscribers Digital Singles Club initiative.

Tash Caesar Ft. Benja Brozel - Human (QFDSC001)

Quickfix Recordings is an independent label based in Oxford, UK.
 
It was started with the aim of giving the flagging music industry a much - needed shot of musical excitement. Ten years down the line and over 20 successful releases (including debuts by bands such as Youthmovie Sountrack Strategies and Smilex) Quickfix Recordings continues to push new music.
 
The idea of Quickfix Recordings was conceived whilst living in Manchester in 1997 where we were inspired by the attitude of the local DIY Music scene there. Manchester had a lot going for it not only was it the home of the legendry Factory Records it was also home to InTheCity and the developing Beehive Mill and Northern Quarter scene. We soon set up a small online compilation tape subscription label called Glass Axe. Each tape was hand copied over old spoken word and nursery rhyme tapes and sent to subscribers featuring the best in up and coming unsigned bands from both Oxford and Manchester. 

In 2000 we returned to Oxford, in the time we had been away the Oxford Music scene had exploded with the coming of Radio 1 Sound City. Great bands such as the The Rock of Travolta, Meanwhile Back in Communist Russia, Eeeblee and a girl band called Caliber had formed and so Quickfix Recordings was born. Our debut release by Caliber 'Someday Now' was released in the January 2002. 

Quickfix Recordings soon developed from being a basic record label and progressed to artist management, recording, gig promoting and radio shows. 

For a number of years we put together the popular local music radio show 'The Fortnightly Fix' on Oxford's Passion 107.9fm and have also had shows on student radio Oxide and OX4 Radio. 

Over the past 10 years we have promoted gigs at many Oxfordshire venues including The Wheatsheaf, Fat Lils, The Ex Hall, Kiss Bar, The Zodiac and The Port Mahon. Gig promotion for us started with helping book bills for the local Abingdon Skittle Alley collective back in 2002, we then helped with the One Louder nights at The Wheatsheaf when, in 2004 we took over the regular monthly slot and turned them into Quickfix Recordings nights. Over the years we have put on a whole host of bands of all styles from Oxfordshire and also further a field, including Frank Turner, Meanwhile... Back In Communist Russia, Fixers, Youthmovies, To The Bones, Nought and Meet Me In St Louis. 

10 years on we still continue to push new music.
