A little flock of Whooper Swans, arrived a few days ago, one hour after sunset at Rengaskari Reef one mile from our home shore.  The sea is frozen a long way out, but by the shallow waters of the reef there's a small piece of free water.  The picture is by sunset as I leaved the mics on the reef.

The Forêt des Cedres (cedar forest) is one of the most unusual of the forests and green spaces of the Luberon massif, given the oriental origin of these large trees. At an altitude of 727 metres, the cedar forest was originally planted with seeds from the Algerian Middle Atlas, back in 1861.

Due to it's altitude and distance from major towns and roads, the forest is very quiet and makes for a perfect recording location. I arrived an hour before sunrise intending to record the spring dawn chorus. As I approached the entrance to the forest I heard a nightingale singing so I slowly approached, getting as close to the bird's song post without disturbing it. I setup my mics using the "tree ears" technique: spaced omnis with the tree trunk acting as a natural baffle.

'Blackbird' is the third single from the debut album 'i'll put you where the trombone slides' by Hailey Beavis, out on OK Pal Records on November 4th, 2022. The album, which has been seven years in the making, is a celebration of resilience, determination and evidence of an artist who has overcome many obstacles to reach where they are today.

On her new single, Beavis says: 
"I wrote 'Blackbird' one night in a rehearsal room. The stuttering existential refrain demands answers from an indifferent universe, as casio parts unfold and layer up over electric guitar. As I began writing it, I could hear so many melodies and countermelodies all at once. An early recording of this song hears me trying to find space in the song for each melody, between the twinkling of stars, ghostly choral voices and electric guitar. Check out the video, where I play a ghost hunter and the ghost... spooky!"
