We Are Deliberate and Afraid of Nothing

Following up their recent EP, Quilotoa return with the single 'This Line Terminates Here'. A thoughtful piece which evokes the bittersweet nostalgia in leaving one part of life behind, and the hope of what the next part could bring. Frenetic melodies interlace ambient found sounds, mimicking a solitary traveller's journey through an oblivious, static landscape, and the irrelevance of the individual experience in the face of passing time.

Blind Summit [Dialogue]

One day my dishwasher was making some weird noises, it kind of sounded like an alien playing a didgeridoo was trapped inside.  So I recorded a little bit of the sound and then processed it using Paul's Extreme Sound Stretch.  And whaddya know - it actually sounds pretty good. 

The original and stretched versions are on my profile page here. 

I posted the stretched version on the Hypnos Recordings forum just for kicks.  A couple folks asked to hear the original source as well.  Then the next thing you know some of the artists who frequent the forum took that original dishwasher sound & used it as a source to come up with their own original takes.

I was pretty darn excited.  These are artists that in some cases I've been listening to for years.  And they were going to make music from my freakin' dishwasher.  Pretty cool.

We ended up with five pieces created from the original dishwasher sounds.  I also asked my son, who produced EDM music as AXX, now he is Just A Human, to also make an ambient dishwasher tune, which he did and I gotta say I love his version.  Throw my stretched version in there and we have 7 dishwasher tunes, enough for a whole mix.  Pretty cool again.

I started the mix with the original sound and let it morph into the different versions.  They all flow together nicely.

This mix is over 5 years old and it wasn't until today that I realized that I'd never posted it here along side the original recording. So here it is - the only ambient dishwasher mix in this universe. Cheers!

Quilotoa is the collaboration of Bristol-based producers LTO (@lto-oa) and Keplr, who met in 2013 trekking the Ecuadorian crater lake of the same name. Having remained friends, Quilotoa is their first collaboration.

Through their writing process the producers reminisce about the challenges they experienced whilst climbing the volcano Cotopaxi, the strange effects of altitude on the mind and the elation of the pair reaching the summit. Packed with heavily textured samples and soaring synths, their music mimics the vast Andean landscape; and the energy and euphoria of two friends on an adventure in the unknown.

LTO first made waves as part of mysterious electronic collective @OldApparatus, releasing on Mala's @deep-medi-musik label. As a solo producer, he has since attracted attention with his LPs on @injazerorecords and @Denovali Records as well as his collaboration with producer @edapollo as @Hirola.

La Cumbre

We end the year with a cold and somber track. "After All" by Hirola is a moving one-off single that feels both sorrowful and hopeful. As if you've been surrounded by ice all night, but the sun is finally beginning to rise and show you the way.

Spring of 2021 is off to a good start! Well, at least when it comes to beautiful music that I love to feature on Headphone Commute! This week has already been full of introductions, announcements, and exciting premieres! And today is no exception! In fact, it’s the highlight of my week, as I’ve been awaiting to share this release with you for almost a month now. “Anxiety Mist” is an opening piece from Matt Emery‘s upcoming six-track EP on Injazero Records, titled Spotlight Series : Cello, and it holds no prisoners! As you may have already glimpsed from the title, Emerie intends to release a series of recordings, focusing on an individual instrument for each one – with the opener prominently featuring the cello. In addition to showcasing the virtuosity, tonal range, and timbre-rich textures of each one, there is also a story with each release. Perhaps the album cover [and my tongue-in-cheek pun of mentioning ‘prisoners’ above] gives away the theme of this first entry, as the dark, intense, and cinematic climax of this piece retells a story of a samurai preparing for a battle. Anxiety is at the core of rising tones, increasing tension in dynamics as if performed in one big breath until exhale brings on comfort.

Opener ‘Anxiety Mist’ is made up of fifteen individually-performed lines, its core revolving around a rising glissando figure, eventually accompanied with lush, building harmonies and punctuated by stabs and erratic higher melodies that paint the picture of warriors waiting in line amid the mist, a thunderous charge into battle forebodingly imminent.
