Kaleema - Ololiuqui (Numa Gama Remix)

'A Guide to the Birdsong of South America' is a non-profit, crowd-funded album of music inspired by birdsong. Featuring some of the continent's most talented young musicians and producers, each artist used the recorded song of an endangered species from their country and created an original track.

The album aims to raise awareness about the plight of these birds and also to raise funds for those working to protect them. All proceeds will be donated to a pair of Ecuadorian NGO birding charities, which will include paying the salary of chief ranger of the Tapichalaca reserve, home to the Jocotoco Antpitta, Franco Mendoza.

The compilation highlights the new wave of South American musicians revisiting the region's rich musical heritage in the 21st century and offers a diverse snapshot of the region's new sound. Taking in seven South American countries from Brazil to Chile and ten artists, from the much hyped digital Peruvian cumbia of Dengue Dengue Dengue to Argentinian rhythm trio Tremor. French born Nicola Cruz has worked with electronica whizz Nicolas Jaar, and has now returned to his roots in Ecuador, making this project close to him in every sense of the word.

The birdsong and the story of these 11 unique birds became the building block for each track in a myriad of different ways by each artist. Some used the song as a sample throughout, others incorporated it into the background while some even transformed the birds into a synthesizer.

This album not only celebrates great music but also the majesty of these species and the need to protect them. Art can be an effective vehicle to transmit a message and, in this case, remind us of the need to protect our planet and the species we share it with.

The second single from "A Guide to the Birdsong of Western Africa" comes from Senegalese super-group Wau Wau Collectif and features Kora maestro Lamine Cissokho. They made a beautiful track inspired by the Yellow-casqued hornbill, a species that faces a high risk of extinction in the wild, mainly due to habitat loss and hunting. The lyrics call on citizens of the world to mobilise, come together and protect our ecosystems.

Wau Wau Collectif Feat. Lamine Cissokho - Yellow-casqued hornbill

Multi Culti are proud to present the debut EP from Sao Paolo's Voodoohop resident, Thomash.

DJ Thomash has set up one of the most influential nights in the bazooming Brazilian scene with his Voodoohop party, a fusion of tropical hedonism and avant-garde trance-inducing European electronic music, a lively mix that no doubt has its genesis in his transplanted German roots (he's from Cologne aka Kompakt-ville). He's shared the stage with guys like Rebolledo, Joakim, Acid Pauli and more, and now finally looks to colonize the world with his first release.

Interestingly, Thomash has a degree in artificial intelligence, so while it might just be our imagination, it does seem that the rhythms, full of oddly tuned percussion and colorful synth stabs seem imbued with a distinct internal logic, playful forms that bounce off each other in their own reality, according to their own laws. This narrative of the ethnoid, German-Brazilian AI ties in nicely with the title: Candomble is the name of an Afro-Brazilian religion, meaning literally 'dance in honour of the gods.' Fortunately for us, Thomash seems to be honouring some scarcely acknowledged, far-out deities... spritely DMT-elves. Ectoplasma further plays into this reading, both in title and in vibe, floating unconcerned with material dancefloor goals into a space of peaceful imagination and spirit. Finally, Calango Fumando Palha is a soft, dreamy morning peyote-fire anthem… a healing latin lullaby to soothe troubles and set positive vibes free.

Called in to take us deeper into the trip are Multi Culti's go-to sooth-sayers DREEMS, who lead us forwards in full-chakra-alignment with the originals, bringing bigger bass into the heart of the jungle, tripping on acid, leaving us loose-limbed, wide-eyed, and open-minded in bliss as the final chords tuck us in and kiss us goodnight. 'Campo Triste' está inspirado en el famoso tema ecuatoriano "La Bocina', en este caso (sample) interpretado por Soledad Morales, cantante invidente quien radicó en Sigsig, pequeño pueblo de la provincia del Azuay. No fue sorpresa encontrar que el productor ecuatoriano Pancho Piedra, habitante de Cuenca, Ecuador, se encontrara trabajando en una re interpretación de este tema. Tiene sentido, toda una generación dedicada a la radio, transmitiendo joyas resguardadas en las bóvedas de 'Radio Tomebamba'. 

Así continua la familia Piedra, en poder de antiguos discos que cuentan la historia de un Ecuador nostálgico, liderado en aquellas épocas por el timón y los arreglos de don Polibio Mayorga. Este es un homenaje contemporáneo sin duda, con el fin de rescatar ese anhelo sonoro de aquellos tiempos.

We are honoured to present a very special and very beautiful Botanas from the hand of Ecuadorian producers Nicola Cruz and Pancho Piedra. 

Campo Triste' is inspired by the famous Ecuadorian song "La Bocina", in this case with a sample from a version sung by Soledad Morales, a blind singer from Sigsig, a small town in the province of Azuay. It wasn't a surprise for Nicola to discover that Pancho Piedra, a fellow Ecuadorian producer living in Cuenca, was working on a reinterpretation of the song. Everything made sense - Piedra belonging to a generation that is dedicated to treasuring and transmitting musical gems from the vaults of the city's "Radio Tomebamba". 

In this way the story of the Piedra family continues, holding in their hands these old records that tell, with nostalgia, the history of Ecuador, led at the time by don Polibio Mayorga’s arrangements. 

While this is undoubtedly a modern tribute, it also captures and revives this nostalgic piece of musical longing from another time. 

This Botanas also features three precious remixes from fellow Ecuadorian Quixosis, Mexico's Jiony and Chile's Rodrigo Gallardo.

Siete Notas - El Estanquillo (Quixosis edit)

Biomigrant is the musical project of producer and multi-instrumentalist Michael Alfred Wagner. In 2014, as part of a journey of musical exploration, he crossed Central America en bicycle, arriving to Colombia where he currently lives. As part of the Llorona Records tribute to the gaita flute master Manuel Antonio “Toño” García, Biomigrant put together a compilation of remixes of a piece made with the field recordings of Toño singing. El Buho, Quixosis, Lascivio Bohemia, Joaquín Cornejo, RLHBSLCN, Marcelo Bergés and Steffen Ki present beautiful and different takes of “La Muerte” giving us a broad picture of latin american electronic and world downtempo landscape.

I arrived to the house of the maestro Toño García in San Jacinto in May of 2014. I had just arrived to Colombia, finishing a bicycle journey that began in Guatemala. In Panama a traveling couple told me of Mr. García, and in Bogotá a friend put me in touch so I could visit him. I made it to San Jacinto, an iconic village of the Colombian Caribbean, and I spent various nights camping along the edge of the lake, in the mornings taking classes with Toño. I received my first Gaitas from him, while he showed me songs and told mi stories of his wanderings, struggles, successes, and loves.

Manuel Antonio ‘Toño’ García joined the Gaiteros de San Jacinto after the death of Mañe Mendoza, returning to a legacy that he had left behind for years to dedicate himself to agricultural work. Winner of a Latin Grammy for the album ‘Un Fuego de Sangre Pura’, along with a generation of the group that included his student Fredys Arrieta, el maestro sill lives in his house in San Jacinto where to this day he receives visits from a endless stream of students and lovers of Gaita music, sharing with them his music and wisdom.

There here taught me the song ‘Conmigo Nadie Se Meta’, written by Nando Coba. ‘La Muerte’ is a re-interpretation of that melody, with the voice of Toño and the gaita of Fredys. It was originally published en 2016 as part of ‘Aldea Mundial’, an audiovisual project (album and documentary) released with the chilean label Regional.

I am very grateful for the 7 tremendous artists and friends from Latin America and Europe for their remixes which offer a tribute to a great musician, person, and teacher. We are part of an emerging scene that looks to create a meeting grounds between electronica and traditional folk music, and the least we can do is try to give something back to those who have maintained the essence of rural musics.

All funds generated by this work will be given to Toño Garcia (who recently celebrated his 90th birthday) and his family as assistance that we hope will help to care for his health and upkeep in San Jacinto. Biomigrant - La Muerte (Quixosis Remix)

For our 3rd release, we present a single EP produced by Jiony, with soothing vocals from Ana Karen, coming from the heart of the contemporary downtempo scene in Mexico.

Co-founder of Mexico City based electronic music label VAA, Jiony marinates his own live looping and improvisation on his best friends - keyboards, with a therapeutical voice, Ana Karen. After their collaboration on VAA back in 2016, the duo shows how perfectly Ana’s voice and Jiony’s slow synth game blends.

First remix comes from Pigmalião, touching back to his Brazilian roots with the percussions after launching his new label I Lost My Poncho, closing the curtain with his dreamy synths. Quixosis finds Pigmaliao’s lost poncho and creates a hypnotic texture with twisting the vocals and Jungel brings us back again to the sea side with his guitar.

Shika Shika Collective is proud to present “De aquí hasta aquí”, the debut album by percussionist and producer Federico Estévez.

You may know Fede as the drummer and percussionist for Chancha Vía Circuito´s live band, having made a reputation around the world for his rhythmic virtuosity and trademark broken beats.

Following “Hologramas” the captivating opening track on Shika Shika’s “Mare Insularum” compilation, “De aquí hasta aquí” is Fede’s first full-length release. On it he shares with us his complex, poly-rhythmic universe through nine tracks uniting his own South American origins, with African rhythms and featuring collaborations with Rodrigo Gallardo, Pablo Paz, Wen, Manu Quintans, Klik & Frik and Chancha vía Circuito.

The Kingdom of Benin, also known as the Benin Kingdom, was a pre-colonial kingdom in what is now southern Nigeria. It is not to be confused with Benin, the post-colonial nation state. The Kingdom of Benin's capital was Edo, now known as Benin City in Edo state. The Benin Kingdom was "one of the oldest and most highly developed states in the coastal hinterland of West Africa", it was formed around the 11th century, until it was annexed by the British Empire in 1897. The original people and founders of the Benin Kingdom, the Edo people, were initially ruled by the Ogiso (Kings of the Sky) who called their land Igodomigodo. The first Ogiso (Ogiso Igodo), wielded much influence and gained popularity as a good ruler. He died after a long reign and was succeeded by Ere, his eldest son. In the 12th century, a great palace intrigue erupted and crown prince Ekaladerhan, the only son of the last Ogiso, was sentenced to death as a result of the first queen (who was barren) deliberately changing an oracle's message to the Ogiso. In carrying out the royal order that he be killed, the palace messengers had mercy and set the prince free at Ughoton near Benin. When his father the Ogiso died, the Ogiso dynasty officially ended. The people and royal kingmakers preferred their late king's son as the next to rule. The exiled Prince Ekaladerhan had by this time changed his name to Izoduwa (meaning 'I have chosen the path of prosperity') and found his way to Ile-Ife. It was during this period of confusion in Benin that the elders, led by Chief Oliha, mounted a search for the banished Prince Ekaladerhan - whom the Ife people now called Oduduwa. Oduduwa, who could not return due to his advanced age, granted them Oranmiyan, his grandson, to rule over them. Oranmiyan was for many years the ruler of Africa, the one and only king, who he build the legendary pyramids of Senegal, now vanished, one of the lost wonders of today’s world!!
